Yostumpy
The circlip that goes on the end of the halfshaft at the drive member end. is it necessary? What happens if you dont put one on. If you dont , does the shft slide inward and jam in the diff or lock the cv. Sorry for a numpty question, Stumpy
white90
cross pin on the diff stops it migrating towards that end and the collar on the shaft limits travel towards the CV I always fit them.
Les Henson
It should be there. It's ok in a staright line, but on a tight turn the CV will be out of the centre line through the swivel pins, so could possibly put a lot of force on the CV. Les. crwoody
I would assume it's there to keep the centre line of the CV joint in line with the centre of the swivel bearings, having said that, it can't move any more than about 2 or 3 mm, I doubt if thats enough to cause any problems, but who knows? Edit; Les beat me to it !
Ex Member
Nothing stops the CV going too far into and hitting the swivel housing. It can also let the CV fall out of its bearing.
western
you need them -- 1. to retain the shim which sets the drive shaft end float 4 replies within 4 minutes, that's got to be a forum record.
Les Henson
If you set the wheels in the straight ahead position and remove the circlip, you can push the shaft in flush with the edge of the drive member, so about 6mm 'lost'. Les.
white90
I misread the first post and thought he meant the clip that holds the CV on the halfShaft.
dantd5
Mine went off and gave "Clonking" noise whenever I took curves. After discovering that and well in place, the noise is off. I will affix it where it belongs.
Ex Member
As I stated, it is the only thing preventing the CV bell from hitting the swivel ball. Without the clip, the CV will hit and rub on the inside of the ball.
