I built a chalenge style truck 38" boggers ,arbs etc which wasnt realy road friendly any way,i have a 2004 90 bog standard farm truck no frills and took it out for a play Wow what reliable good fun it was,The Moral of this is, everyone on this forum one used to say keep it standard and enjoy it how right they were,i used to think i needed it all to offroad but its easy to get sucked in.I now enjoy my landy more than ever and have learnt its capabilites,,Which are well good,

Regards

I feel the same way when I am driving the wifes Isuzu Trooper. It is nowhere near as capable offroad as my more specialised built up LandRover, but I still manage to enjoy taking it to places that are within and sometimes beyond the limits for which it was designed. Now that is all very well if one is just playing. But aside from being extremely capable offroad, I also expect my landRover to perform an honest days very hard work on my property without breaking every five minutes, and for that purpose 6.00x16 tyres.10 spline halfshafts on unlockable chocolate differentials driven by a food blender gearbox just does not cut the mustard.

Bill.

Saley and myself drove around the Mow Cop site to look at punches in the following days competitionlast Saturday,

We drove my 12 month old standard Toyota HiLux crewcab with little thin road tyres on it, and had a proper good laugh at nearly getting stuck loads of times and having to be mega selective about what route across a wet field we took, and had a few near misses.

Great fun, no ARB's no Simex, brilliant.

Apart from mud tyres* my 90 is completely standard, no special suspension, no lift kit. It's just a V8 90, and I've never been disapointed with what it can do, and I take part in what I would call some pretty challenging events run by 4x4 Adventures. I know of a guy who can get to places a Challenge truck would have trouble getting in a 90 300TDi with just a set of BFG MTs on.

I'm not saying it isn't what you drive, it is, Land Rovers are still the daddy, but if you combine that with a bit of thought and try to learn new skills instead of buying a set of 40" boggers, you may find that its a lot cheaper. As you add more complex parts you're going to increase breakages, and those parts encourage you to drive harder anyway, not to drive the bits you would already do with more confidence. I believe a standard Land Rover is a reliable vehicle.

*I have a winch, but that's for getting me out of places when the tyres can't do any more, not for getting my further into them.
