Engine number mismatch

Recommended Posts

Hi all, i've just won an ebay auction on a lovely 1994 Defender 90 but when I went to collect the car I of course checked all the usual things against the paperwork the owner has. Everything was fine except the engine number which isn't even slightly close. The owner seemed as suprised as I did and after spending a good 45 mins with him I tend to believe what he says but still.....

How can I check that it doesn't have a stolen engine inside?

hi, sorry should have put more info.

Its a 200 TDI and the number starts 12L * 01XXXX

the V5 says its a 19J0XXXXX and this matches all the previous owner details

OK, not as bad as you think.this is a fairly common engine change.

19J was the older non intercooled turbo diesel often replaced when it dies by a Discovery spec 200Tdi which is what the 12L code tells us. so the 90 has recieved a Tdi transplant at sometime during it'slife, possibly before the current owner bought the vehicle. if you have completed the purchase or want, getting the V5 document changed isn't a problem, just write the 'New' engine number in the correct place & send the V5 to DVLA for amendment,

hope this helps.

its also a Q plate which was shipped to the country from Ireland and registered on arrival. Reason for Q says unable to prove year of manufacture. Something else i've just noticed, as I took photos of V5, engine number and VIN and i've just loaded them up and zoomed in on the Vin is that the number is correct apart from a number 2 stamped in but on paperwork its down as a Z. Even www.mycarcheck says that the Z is correct for this vehicle.

So annoying, I really like this motor but i'm unsure of what to do :-(

PM me the full 17 digit VIN/Chassis number & I'll be able to tell you the original spec, sounds like it's a mid 80's to 1990 TD 90, & bought back into UK in 1994, unlikely to be a genuine '94 reg if it had a TD 19J engine when new.

I'd walk away. Another will come up that is all correct and will be no hassle to you. You could end up with a load of work to sort this out - by that i mean frustrating phone calls to the DVLA who wont be much help leaving you wondering what you have bought and if it is all legitimate.

How very annoying, 2nd in a row that this has happend !!

Yes, but you are being very sensible - temptation is to buy it and try and sort it out but you could end up with either a Landy that's nothing like you thought you bought or worse it's been stolen some time ago and you lose it and your money.

It's not the only one out there, there will be a good correctly documented one waiting to be bought.

No major drama with DVLA. Previous owner fitted a 200tdi and changed bodies from hard top to SW. Noted V5 still had the old details, so just filled in the boxes on the V5, posted it with photos of new body. New V5 came back a few weeks later.

Thats fine, but the OP doesnt know the history of the engine (- i.e. if it was nicked) as the currentl owner clearly has no details of an engine change therefore no receipts. With the fact that the age is thought to be 1994 and it is registered with a 19J engine which makes no sense with that age of vehicle, i would walk away from it unless it easy to prove all is ok. The DVLA will be less than useless if you phone for advice of any sort with that one....
