sudden power loss

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, i thought my vehicles problems were over but again (after several months of peace ..disaster struck again)the power suddenly failed on my 110 csw whilst towing a horsebox on dual carriageway with nearly disastrous consequences ! with lorries steaming from up behind. I have had the opinions of quite a few people and have never really found the cause. i have had the fuel pump checked.Local LR garage suggest could be faulty wiring ? but they dont deal with vehicles as old as mine ..(1998) local garage doesnt want to know saying he doesnt know much about immobilisers. The mysterious thing is the problem seems to go away as quick as it arrived and things return to normal. Wondered if the immobiliser was faulty but wife was driving this time and says the engine still continued to tick over just no power to pull. Any ideas welcome folks. its a shame because its a nice vehicle otherwise. I dont know if forum regulator will allow this Q but nothing ventured...

Can't see how wiring is involved on a 300tdi if the engine runs at all - assuming the solenoid is energised when it runs (could enough leak past when it's off? but then you couldn't switch it off). Pulling the trailer means you'll use considerably more fuel. Sounds to me like a fuel or maybe boost problem,I'd suspect a blockage in the feed from the tank, and firstly make sure that the lift pump to the filter and back to the tank is free - Might also be some crud getting sucked onto the pickup inside the tank, then dropping free, but that's more work to check. I have to say the tank on my 97 110 was almost in pieces so it could be time for a new tank. Had this once (not on a LR) before with a large moth sucked into the pipe and getting stuck in a banjo bolt - engine fine for a bit then dead (as the moth) then recovered.

Regards

Nigel

Thanks for all replies, immobiliser or tank gunge i reckon one or other is probably spot on,dont know what immobiliser spider means but sounds interesting, sorry to take so long to reply, i've been totally scunnered now and am finally getting rid of the vehicle to a specialist who has the tools and know how and time to fix whatever it is and i'm off to get a newer model.
