ChrisW70
Surrey County Council are proposing permanent TROs on Silkmore Lane and Fullers Farm Lane. More details here: http://tinyurl.com/32fs2l3 In summary, the Council received a petition from a subset of users of these byways. Apparently, if the Council receive a petition with 25 or more signatures, they have to provide a formal response. In this case, the Guildford Local Committee reviewed the situation and decided to propose TROs despite there being money budgeted for maintaining these byways. The TROs are being made on the grounds of "significant danger to users of the route and to prevent significant damage to the route". With regards to the "significant damage" argument there is money available to maintain these lanes. The proposed order would prohibit recreational 4x4 drivers from using these byways but allow non-recreational 4x4 drivers to drive them for things like accessing land, maintenance and farming. There is some excellent information on the Surrey TRF web site: http://www.surreytrf.org.uk/ which includes the full details of the proposal and some examples of letters of objection. One point to note is apparently one of the local councillors lives on one of the lanes and it as apparently a 'done deal' that these lanes will be closed! Objections need to be in by 27th August 2010 - act now! Please take 5 minutes just to drop an email or letter to the council recording your thoughts on this. Please pass this on to anyone else you know that may be interested.

mickeyw
Following my letter of objection, I have just received a letter from Surrey CC, notifying me of SCC Local Committee meeting on Wednesday 8th December 2010, at which this proposed TRO will be discussed. 258 objections were received by Surrey CC, from a fair cross section of users, including 4x4s, so they have had to sit up and take notice. The venue (not mentioned in the links below): Guildford Methodist Church, Woodbridge Road, Guildford GU1 4RB. The meeting starts at 7pm. They are obviously expecting a good turnout, as extra parking has been arranged at the nearby sports/cricket ground. Updated further info can be found at Surrey CC website, also at Thames MCC's site.
