chrisanddeb
can anyone help with ideas for a 94 classic that won't start when hot. will not even turn over it seems to be a protection for something because after 20 to 40 mins will fire up and run perfect again. only doing this on hot days or after hard runs in low but still a pain that needs dealing with. chris
V8 Freak
Hi Chris.. Welcome to the forum. You may want to tell people a little more about your truck.. Engine would be a good start so people know if they are dealing with Diesel or Petrol etc.!! Neil
FridgeFreezer
Assuming it's a V8, it's a classic ignition amplifier fault.
Range Rover Blues
When you say it won't turn over do you mean there is no attempt to engage the starter or the starter throws in but can't budge the engine? Any clicking at all? lights on the dash? have you tried hotwiring the starter?
SteveRK
sounds electrical relay iffy' solder joint syndrome? Could be main relay under drivers seat or starter motor relay, or even a fuse connection.
Snagger
If the starter motor won't crank the engine, then the starter motor solenoid had started to jam when the unit is hot. I have had this before on a 110 diesel engine - the combined heat of the engine and weather cause the solenoid's slug to seize inside the casing in its non-energised position; whacking it with a hammer will help until you can replace it. You will need a new starter motor as the solenoid is integral to it.
FridgeFreezer
Ignore my post, failed to read the symptoms properly, more coffee required. The solenoids can be purchased separately for some V8 starters (part# RTC5049), and if you are keen you can remove it, clean the hole the solenoid slug moves in, and put it back together. May not prolong its life indefinitely but it may help.
chrisanddeb
further details the car is a soft dash 3.9l when in traffic or low range on a hot day it will not even engage the starter, at the moment i've set up an under bonnet starter button straight to the starter solinoid to discount the gearbox temperature switch located on the front top of the transmission. will update when next fails to see if bypassing the entire ignition system works.
