Tibout
Hi guys I'm planning of rebuilding the swivel housing as the kingpin bearing is shot I think. I could rock the wheel easily so change wheel bearing and adjust properly but it still thesame. And if I hit a hole on a corner the landy seems to go onone side! So imgoing to do both side. Any special tool I need before I get involve? Will I use the same shims I remove or the ones provided in the kit? Any help from anyone will be ofgreat help guys thanks Kind regards thierry
adam300Tdi90
You will need to measure the resistance of the bearings. You can increase resistance by using less shims, or decrease resistance using more shims. To measure resistance, you need a spring balance (fishermans scales) which, before putting the oil seal back on, you will clip to the track rod mount on the hub and measure the resistance to turning the swivel on the spring balance. Download the Workshop manual (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=55181)for a much better explanation
Frax
Hi I just did mine – it’s not that hard and you don’t need any special tools, you would be better to remove the half shafts to make it easy to knock out the bearing case but you may be able to do it without doing that. I did remove it as I was doing all the bearings and seals. I used the same shims but it should not matter if you fit the new ones or a mixture of them both as the pin will sit slightly higher than the ones you have in probable as everything will be new. On the half shaft at the moment I have no shims as I replaced the brass rings and have no play in the shaft. Plan to run it for a while and then recheck and fit shims as required. Just make sure you give the hub a good wash before starting so you don’t get dirt in your new bearings and grease. Regards Frax
landroversforever
Nothing special needed, just a spring balance . Remember to do it before the seal is in. And its a lot easier without the CV/shaft in too.

landroversforever
No, the swivel ball stays on the axle . unless you're changing the seal.

landroversforever
personally, having had to clean out an axle full of carp, I'd take the swivel ball off and fit the seal properly.
western
thanks for the leak guys. if you do split the seal will that not maiking the oil out? or how does it work? cut the seal diagonally 7 fit with the cut at the top, best way is to remove the swivel ball to do a properly fitted job.
