Confirmation of Defender Oil

Recommended Posts

Started today thinking ill spend 5 mins ordering some oil... few hours later i think i have finally decided on something. Got reading into the whole GL5/GL4 transfer brass issues which caused some confusion and a never ending spiral of web site links.

I have an 86 military defender 90. I'm assuming the diffs are original (rear one was white). It has had a 200tdi disco engine conversion by the previous owner. I'm unsure which vehicles gearbox it has (discos or defenders) but in any case its an LT77. Not sure if the transfer box is the defenders or discos, it seems to be lacking a serial number. The lack of solid info on the parts on the landy is my general concern about which type of oil I need. So, have I got this right:

EP80W90 GL-5 in Diffs. 1.3 L in each. No brass in defender diffs, so have read GL-5 is the way to go for these?

EP80W90 GL-4 in transfer box. 2.3 L. Some transfers might have brass parts, therefore GL4 is the choice here?

ATF / MTF94 in the LT77 gearbox. 2.7 L. All LT77s use same oil. Will probably treat it to some difflock evolution 1 stuff. Curious to see if it will make a difference to the smoothness of the change.

TIA, Ian

Transfer box should be fine with GL5 too.

Is it just Series Transfer boxes with 'yellow' metals then?

I've read that certain GL5 oils are fine but others are not, but they need to be rated to be compatible with GL4 stuff... difflocks evolution stuff is gl4/gl5 so its fine in either or, but its a touch expensive :), Millers do some GL4/5 stuff too but its more expensive than the specific graded stuff.

I believe so, although I ran mine on EP90 too and that seemed happy enough. LT230's are definitely happy with EP90.

Thanks for the reply. :)

Last night found some EP90 GL4 and EP80w90 GL5 each for 15 quid for 5Ls delivered on ebay, so ordered them.

Don't think you have to do all your shopping on Ebay.

Any motor factors can supply the correct oils for your vehicle plus they will probably be cheaper and there will certainly be no postage involved. There are several in every town (i'm not talking Halfords here) as it is they that supply the local garages.

That does depend on where he is though. I wouldn't touch my local motor factors with yours.

There are places like CarSpares etc, but they only had little 1 litre bottles of Comma oil in the grade i needed at 7 quid each. I could do with finding a big industry supplier... Gotta be loads kicking about in Birmingham...

Those smith & allan ebay ones are 15£ delivered. I thought that was quite reasonable! Well, compared to the cheapest i found on Opieoils which ended up at 50£ after delivery. And that was with the current weekend discount and member code (about 25%!).

Spookily enough I was looking at the same £15 Smith and Allan stuff on eBog today. With a 230 and a couple of axles to fill it seemed a reasonable price, conducive to very frequent changes which should outweigh/ cost the "quality" alternatives. So, if yours doesnt destroy itself after 50 miles, that's the route I'll take
