checking waste gate actuator and turbo

Recommended Posts

evening,

i am convinced that my 110 200 tdi defender is down on power, and i am thinking its maybe turbo - waste gate actuator related. she's done 146000 miles.

i have replaced the intercooler hoses, cleaned the intercooler and fitted a new lift pump.

the injector pump hasnt been touched, until i can asertain if the turbo etc is ok.

there is a small amount of movement on the turbo shaft, but how much is acceptable or normal i dont know ?

i have ruled out the injectors at this stage until i check the turbo.

there is always quite alot of turbo lag, especially going uphill.

i have the usual puff of black smoke on start up, but then nothing after that, the air cleaner hoses and intercooler hoses have a trace of oil, but thats probaly normal i guess.

1 ) can anybody tell me how to check the waste gate actuator to ensure its working correctly ? (independant of the turbo ? )

2 ) whats the correct standard turbo boost pressure for my 200 tdi defender ? ( 0.84 bar ? )

3 ) would i get a new waste gate actuator with a new turbo ? or is it a seperate item ?

4 ) what happens if i adjust the waste gate actuator rod ?

TIA..

cheers...

Welcome to the club. I've just broken mine trying to find why its down on power.

AFAIK, normal boost is about 1 bar.

Adjusting the waste gate rod, changes the pressure at which the gate dumps boost, so controls to max amount of boost produced. Recommended max is around 1.5 I think.

By 'lag', do you mean it takes a while to get up to power, or that there just isn't any power?

Best thing to do is probably fit a boost gauge and see if you are getting the full amount.

200Tdi boost is 0.85 IIRC, 300 is 1.05 bar. Before you go any further, with engine off, check full depression of throttle pedal gives full opening on injector pump. If not adjust cable locknut at pump end, NOT the stop on the pump. Adjuster sometimes vibrates back.

You seemed to have checked all the normal, but a lift pump on the way out will give low power.

300Tdi wastegate actuators are available separately so I guess 200 ones are. Borrow or buy a boost gauge (about £30 from various, but try Europa specialist parts).

Changing wastegate rod length will change boost but get a gauge 1st as increased boost rapidly raises EGT which risks melted pistons/valves and head gasket problems.

Also throughly check intercooler hoses as they can split underneath. The 1st one on the turbo outlet is most prone to this.

A wastegate actuator for a 200TDi is around £90 - odd quid :( Make sure you need one first!

Les. :)

evening,

i have ordered a boost guage, so i should be able to check the turbo out, and will check some items previously mentioned as well.

:-)

cheers...
