stuck
Gent's, I know I've posted this before but I don't think I got a reply & can't find the original post. Can anybody recommend a good quality return to centre steering damper please? Cheers, Mick.
DAN82SED
im no expert on the subject, but ive just fitted the terrafirma one and am very happy with it. it took me a couple of attempts to get it centered but now it is steering feels tight hope this helps
landy andy.
You may find that you will have to stop the spring unwinding on the terrafima rtc. I used a hose clip for this. See how you get on, but if you start drifting to one side check it. Andy
FridgeFreezer
How about a normal steering damper & fix the handling problem properly?
adam300Tdi90
These are sold because apparently they solve the issue where larger tyres do not self centre. Is it rubbish Mr Freezer?
Bowie69
I think the larger tyres thing is more likely the lift to fit said big tyres screwing with castor angles, not sure a larger tyre would have any effect on the RTC effect of the stock castor angle. Really, fixing the castor angle is the way to do it, and as has been said so many times, adjusting the swivels is the way to do that. FridgeFreezer
I run 37's and no damper at all and my steering self-centers. I'd suggest the issue is your 2" lift, not your tyres.
Off Road Toad
RTC dampers also help control shimmy, which is often down to oversize nobbly tires that don't balance too well. Micks issue is that his steering has gone very light with no feel after fitting the 4.6. So perhaps some suggestions on how to fix that problem properly would benefit. Bowie69
I'd suggest swivel pins then, if they are an unknown quantity.
Disco-Ron
i had an rtc damper fitted, i removed it and threw it away as i found that the damper element of it did nothing !
stuck
Sorry, Haven't explained myself very well, as Steve has said my problem is since dropping in the 4.6 my steering is so light (one figure levels of input needed with 35" tyres) and completely devoid of feel. Someone suggested that a RTC damper may help but I'm looking for any suggestions please. Steering is great for slow speed off road stuff but pants when you get to any twisty stuff on the road. Disco-Ron
sounds to me like you need to stiffest damper you can possibly get, or maybe even get a bigger pulley for the steering pump?
FridgeFreezer
The problem isn't the damper then it's the hydraulics - probably the 4.6 has a higher output (pressure and/or flow) PAS pump which is not a good match to your steering box. You either want to reinstate a suitable PAS pump or find some way of controlling the pressure, shouldn't be a big challenge using off-the-shelf hydraulics bits. Fix the problem, don't bodge around it by adding other stuff.
Bowie69
I run a P38 pump with standard 4-bolt box, and steering is fine, I've even been fiddling with making it lighter.... It might be worth checking the pump outlet to see if someone has been drilling it out, stock it is 3.2mm. *edit* OR, as I think Nige found out, there is a restrictor in the P38 hose, if you are running a hose without a restrictor then maybe this is what is mucking it all up.... Off Road Toad
The pump was brand new about three months ago (i bought it when i had the engine) and it isn't messed with. The pipe work however is NOT p38, its various defender bits, so maybe there's the problem, didn't know anything about restrictors - matbe thats why i broke so many steering boxes offroad
Bowie69
Time for you to have a word with Nige then, he said it!
