patch1
Hi all it's been a while but hope every one is well. Question. I have a land rover petrol engine that I have been told that it is a 2.5ltr but can not be sure of this. Does anyone know how you can tell if its not got things on it like manifolds and stuff. I dose have a spin on oil filter and a pre engaged starter motor. I was always sure it was but when I was recently given a very large genuine workshop manual that seems to suggest that early defenders could have been fitted with the 5 baring 2.25 I'm now not so sure. Any help on this, engine numbers and the like when I've found it would be good Thanks Mark R
Landy-Novice
the 2.5 usually uses a twin barreled carb compared to a single a a 2.25, how many fins has the fan got? 2.5 has 7.
western
110 first came with the 2.3 petrol [updated 2.25 from the Series 3 range] & then the 2.5 variant. engine serial number location have a good clean/wire brush the area at the front left hand side adjacent to exhaust manifold front attachment flange 2.25 aka 2.3 petrol engine serial number starts with 10H or 11H 2.5 petrol starts with 17H
patch1
Thanks for that, its the serial number was the bit I was after as there are no manifolds or fan on it.
patch1
Also does anyone know what and where the internal differences are as I've been told that the pistons are the same for both 2.25 & 2.5 and the blocks look pretty much identical. Diff
Also does anyone know what and where the internal differences are as I've been told that the pistons are the same for both 2.25 & 2.5 and the blocks look pretty much identical. The 2.5 has a longer stroke crank, so the crankshaft is different, the conrods are different and although the pistons are the same diameter, I think they are different too. Regards, Diff. Landy-Novice
Military 2.25s have a 7 blade fan too! but iirc there painted duck egg green?
Bowie69
And a different wanter pump, but basing it purely on fan blade count is nonsense, there was even a factory fit option for a 7 blade fan (I know this because a friend of mine ordered a brand new one when working for Shell in Kenya in the 1960s)

sean f
The manifold studs on a 2.5 should all be metric as well. This by no means proves it is a 2.5 though as a lot of the replacement lead free petrol heads sold for 2 1/4's also have metric studs. I am pretty sure that other than that the heads are identical. I know a friend a few years back fitted a 2.5 head to a 2 1/4 engine as that was the bits he had kicking around and had no problems so they must be pretty close at least.
