which back plate did you use in your 200tdi conversion?

did you keep the 200tdi disco item and drill and tap....?

or

did you use a 19j (your old engines one)....?

I used the 19j as after a load of searching on the net that was the way I thought people did it. now my mechanic that is fitting my new crank seal says it wont last unless I re-fit a proper disco 200tdi one with the mentioned drilled and tapped holes.

I need to make a decision what to do now, bit of advice would be good.

I'm pretty sure a lot of folks have used the 19J one with no issues at all. Having said that, its not a big deal to drill and tap the disco version and then your timing holes are in the correct position.

I used the Discovery flywheel housing.

Originally had counter sunk bolts to fit but decided to Counterbore rather the Countersink and use Cap Screws in the end as i felt that the stress would be less of an issue with cap screws.

Cap heads every time as yoiu can not tighten CSK heads to the same extent due to the hex key being smaller on a csk.

Disco housing. The holes are already there, just need opening up to tapping size, and

a couple of studs to relocate. As already stated, Disco housing lower half is fixed to the

ladder frame, 19j one is not. Although others say this has been no problem, I think there

is the potential for the joint between the housing and block to ease, resulting in a oil leak

before it reaches the crank seal.

The only problem I'm aware of is that the 19J timing hole is at the top, the defender/disco 200 is at the bottom - I don't see how you can time the crank, unless the flywheel housing drain hole is the right size.

Another way of looking at the disco/def housing versus using one from an earlier engine to avoid the bottom bolts is that Landrover saw fit to introduce those bolts (with the cost of modifying the patterns for the castings plus the bolt costs) for a reason not just a whim.

didnt they also introduce the 300tdi after the 200..err..bad idea- then the td5..err..bad idea

i converted the disco one as i was converting from a petrol engine, i also used cap heads it an easy job
