Series3, 4 cylinder engine

Hi lads, I'm in the process of assembling a short engine, but I'm in a bit of a quandary regarding the head gasket. WHen I lay the gasket on the block, there seems to me to be quite a gap around the cylinders. To explain further, on the right side of the block, the edge of the gasket is about 10/12mm away from the edge of the cylinder, so that when the head goes on, there will be aspace between the block and the head where, in my opinion, there will soon build up a deposit of carbon, and possibly cause problems with pre ignition etc. I've contacted the engine supplier and he said it will be OK, but I'm not so sure. What do you guys think.....? Thanks, Norm.

I've just measured the hole in a spare unknown brand copper 2286 head gasket I've got, and the piston cut-outs are roughly 9.5 cm across.

Does this help?

Thanks everyone for your help, it seems as though this is the way it should be, I've done a bit of hunting around and it appears that for a composite gasket, that is the way it should be.....!! Every gasket manufacturer, Elring etc. are approx. the same.

Anyway lads, I think it's a case of suck it and see.

Thanks again,

Norm.
