Last of the 4.6 V8's

Hi folks

Done a search but didn't really find an answer. Looking for some advice. I have one of the last 4.6 v8s off the assembly line. It was sold as a crate engine and was told the vehicle it finally ended up in it covered 1900 miles but then it was laid up. I brought it to an engine rebuild specialist and he said he would agree with the low mileage. I was talking to him about top hat liners and he reckons not to put them in but I'm not sure he understands what there about. The block has no slipped liners.

So my question. Should I rebuild the engine with no liners and carry on or should I top hat it. I would have the money but it would be absolulty stretching my budget. What makes them slip. I have read the last ones had more meat between cylinders and these weren't as prone as earlier ones and then some people just say top hat regardless.

The RV8 slipped liner prob is generally accepted as being caused by overheating. This in turn tended to be caused by LR's requirement to run the engines lean in order to meet emissions regs...

Ive built a 4.6 from a spanking new block and do not expect any probs as it will be running cool, and be getting plenty of fuel.

If i was building from a 2nd hand unknown block i would have used top-hats.

Out of curiosity, what reason were you given for not using liners??? Ive heard nothing but good things about them...

Meant to add: There were 3 different thicknesses of blocks, marked by paint from LR. Red, Yellow, Blue (i think). The one you want is Red.

If it is not slipped then I wouldn't bother THL, really unnecessary and a waste of money. If it happens in the future then get it done, but as above, run it on Megasquirt and an 82C stat and you'll be unlikely to have issues.

Not some much he was against using them but saying there was no need as he said the engine had very little use. I was all for doing it and just when he made that comment it made me stop a and think hmm I could spend the money elsewhere, but then would I rather have peace of mind and top hat it. But is peace of mind worth 900 pounds

Have the mega squirt kit. Still in box. That's next bugger of a job. I have a 2.5td rad and hope to use the viscous fan that's on the 4.6.

Thanks guys. Just wanted some reassurance

Ends up whatever way the previous guy stored the engine, water got into one of the cylinders and has pitted the liner pretty bad. The machine shop tried to hone it out but can't save it. It's now on its way to ACR for top hatting.
