Weird rust question.

This is a question for the guys that have this kind of concern on regular basis, the guys that have rust concerns, I need help please if it is possible.

The photo shows the left rear corner of the vehicle, but the right hand side looks the same, so my question is can I buy that whole cross section between the rear fenders. I mean the whole box section with the body mounts, I am hoping it is possible to try and save labour cost to keep the cost down as much as possible.

Thanx in advance for any help.

Yes you can buy that section. It is the rear body cross member. Its a pig to fit. They are available from several places in the UK. When I did my last car it came with the car when I bought it so I didn't buy one. YRM also make it in the UK. http://www.yrmlandrover.com/epages/BT3575.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT3575/Products/030/SubProducts/030-0001

On my last car I had to do the whole cross member. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=69483 see post #45.

On my current car I was just able to repair the area because it wasn't too bad. see this post #16 onwards. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=82184&page=3

Edit....I got the links the wrong way round for my cars.

The rust is caused by the exhaust heating the rear body cross member producing condensation in that area, look at most unwelded Range Rovers and you will see this is the first place to rust from the inside out. I have seen some pretty mint looking Rangies but they have the same area rusted.

When you buy the replacement part, the ends are open unlike the original, this should help keep the area ventilated. It's a rear wing off job though.

Thanx for the help guys, vehicle already fixed.

The only reason for "weird rust question" is in my life rust is like a myth, so when I see some rust its like this fairy tale playing off in front of me.

This vehicle must have launched a few boats in its life too.
