technical question re v8 rotor arm

i got a new distributor cap and leads and a rotor arm for my v8 110 but the old rotor arm was rusted on hence it broke when removing

when i fitted the cap and rotor arm it refused to start but when i put the old rotor arm back in it started

big question is what can go wrong with a rotor arm i am baffled any ideas

rotor arms are a bit of consumable item on a rover v8 (hence why EDIS is the chosen modification with what would appear to be very high reliability).

there is nothing that defines a good of or a bad one at first purchase, I always kept a tested and working spare in the battery box sealed in a sandwich bag as I was once stranded in the middle of nowhere, and replaced that when the working one failed and I needed a spare.
