If they had a brake on the left halfshaft, applying the brake will cause the drum to rotate, releasing the brake will cause the left shaft to rotate and the winch will stay still if there is a load on it, such as another brake.

Putting a brake on the pinion will work against the engine.

I know there was a couple of sorry headed 8274 owners that were rescued by a big star at Argyle - this thing looks pretty chunky, if the diffs welded then it turns into a simple bevel box..... or you could just use a bevel box off the back of a BMW, Kwak GTR, ST1100, NTV, GT etc etc etc, cost peanuts... hmm
