need4speed
On trial fitting my starter I noticed a hole on the block under the starter. It's a factory hole around 10mm, not something peculiar to my block as its brand new. I made an enquiry over on the v8 forum and it was suggested that this should be extended to above the potential water line. I was wondering if any RV8 owners know about this issue? Should this hole normally have a blanking plug in? Does this need to be a breather at all?
Paul Woodward
I cant think of any holes under the starter?? Only this one which is one of the cross bolts for the rear main cap.
need4speed
I will try and find a pic..
need4speed
Ok I found this. You can see the hole I mean clearly. About 10-12mm. Directly under the starter.
need4speed
Also just found this... Which suggests that both the large holes my new block has should indeed be blanked.. Dunno how though?
elbekko
Doesn't the Bosch sump cover those?
need4speed
Don't know about the "Bosch" sump. What vehicle is that from? I know that the sump I have from an RRC doesn't cover it. Having a quick look this morning I've found that it looks like part11 below http://lrcat.com/#31/4/53348 Available from Rimmers http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-612898 What's worrying me now is that, seeing as I started with a brand new block, how many other things are missing? Kind of hard to check now the bellhousing is covering the rear of engine...
elbekko
The aluminium sump from the later 4.6 engines, with Bosch engine management system. Sometimes referred to as "Thor".
need4speed
Nice looking sump. Would probably still need to blank the holes off though otherwise lots of oil would be finding its way into the flywheels/clutch area...
elbekko
It goes on with a rubber seal, that I think also covers those holes (but I might be wrong on that).
Bowie69
I don't think it will fit earlier vehicles like yours, due to axle clearance, I know I had to use my 3.9 sump in my RRC to get the 4.0 lump to fit.
elbekko
Huh, a friend has a 4.6 with the Bosch sump in his Classic, only thing that didn't clear the axle was the oil filter.
Bowie69
hmm, well it was too close for my liking... I agree on the oil filter, I have mine mounted on the inner wing.
need4speed
Alright lads. Alright.. I reckon I will use the sump I have already. Can't imagine that alloy sump being too cheap. Certainly not as cheap as two 60p plugs.. Fingers crossed that there isn't anything important missing inside bellhousing..
elbekko
Absolutely, just trying to provide an explanation. If you've got a later block, it could be they didn't bother plugging those holes because the sump covers them.
need4speed
No it wasn't a late block. Although it's brand new it isn't cross bolted. Think I'll be ok once I plug those 2 holes. Just seen some pics showing rear of engine and I remember the big core plugs being in place.
mickeyw
All the RV8s I've ever laid eyes on have had an ally bung in this location. I can say how water tight they are though.
need4speed
Yep that's what I suspected Mickey. Haven't a clue why they're not there. Not only on my new block, but the one I linked a pic to as well. Strange. Still. Glad I caught it. Don't fancy the thought of wading through deep mud with that bung not in place.. Bowie69
Yeah wasn't arguing, was just what I found when I did mine... mine was a '95 engine, if that makes any difference.
duncmc
Here is a not too clear picture of my interim engine. You can see the dowel in one hole, and the alloy bung in the other.
need4speed
What are the dowels for? Sump?
duncmc
No, the dowels are still exposed with the sump on. They might be locating dowels for part of the flywheel or torque converter cover. I can't remember without crawling under the car to look.
need4speed
No no don't go crawling. I was just curious. I don't have an auto anyway
duncmc
No no don't go crawling. I was just curious. I don't have an auto anyway Well, next time I am nearly in that area.....i.e tomorrow night I will have a look anyway. I am curious now too.
