Ridgeback Posted January 26, 2013 Share Posted January 26, 2013 Put my td5 defender 90 CSW in for MOT today and they failed it on having no rear anti roll bar. It's not had one for the last 4 years and never been a problem. They told me that the new MOT system told them it should have one so they failed it. I questioned this because I am sure many early disco's and defender's did not have one and looking on google, this seems to be correct. Have VOSA got build sheets from landrover or is the MOT man being a jobs worth and talking BS ? If it comes to it I will have to get another ARB for MOT's . Guest Posted January 26, 2013 Share Posted January 26, 2013 ARB was an option so although the brackets are there the ARB may not, even though I know you took yours off, Mine was an ex-works truck and didn't come with an ARB although I did add one later it sounds like the MOT man is being a bit OTT. Therefore if the build sheet says anti roll bar. It has to have one. Wasn't this discussed when the MOT regulations were up-dated last year. pat_pending Posted January 27, 2013 Share Posted January 27, 2013 Anti roll bar missing where fitted as standard has been failure for some time. What's happened at previous MOTs is irrelevant. This has been discussed before but here is how it should work. If your vehicle came from the factory with an ARB and you remove it = fail. If your vehicle did not have an ARB fitted at the factory (regardless of whether the brackets are fitted) = pass. The type of springs/specification can determine whether an ARB is required. If you change the suspension and then remove the ARB it is for you to show evidence to the tester that the vehicle is of a specification that no longer requires ARBs fitted or that they were not originaly fitted. In the real world testers can make wrong decisions based on being unfamiliar with the type of vehicle they are testing or missunderstanding the rules. Sometimes benefit of the doubt is given. If you took yours off and haven't changed anything else it seems it was right to fail. My advice is always find a garage familiar with Land Rovers and stick to them for MOTs. I found an early post from Ian at IRB and it mentioned that CSW came with ARB's . Mine is now lifted by 2" with HD springs and gas shocks so its not needed (drives better with new setup vs standard) . I think for the cost of getting a few bolts (I have the rest of the ARB bits) I will just fit it back on for the test because it cost less then another MOT, then next year I will look for a land rover friendly MOT man. Yes with uprated springs you should no longer need the ARBs, so a tester could accept your word for that or ask you to provide written proof, or he may already know that's the case and pass it, or he could still (incorrectly) fail you, depends on his level of knowledge, testers can't know the ins and outs of every vehicle, wrong decisions are sometimes made. That's why, with Land Rovers in particular, it's best to use a test station familiar with that type of vehicle. Northampton's not too far from us, we're just off the A6 north of Bedford, we test a lot of 4x4s and understand they can't all be treated like cars. pat_pending Posted January 27, 2013 Share Posted January 27, 2013 The only thing we get on the system when we log a vehicle for an MOT test is vsi, vehicle specific information. This is infomation the tester needs specific to that type of vehicle. There is nothing that relates to each individual vehicle or it's original build specification or any subsequent modification. After questioning how they would deal with modifications at MOT time they got back to me with the following on email Missing anti roll bar / modifications Whereas the Inspection Manual does have an RfR for anti roll bar missing where fitted as standard we would expect modifications such as the fitting of aftermarket kits or specialist modifications which do not then require or permit the fitting of an anti roll bar. In these instances the tester should pass and advise so that the presenter is aware of the modification and there is a clear record of the NTs decision.
