  1. Oi! Yes I did I used this new fangled tagging wotsit up the top ^^^^^^
  2. Speak nicely to @Hybrid_From_Hell. He has a lathe and a vague idea of how to use it....
  3. I know the wheel studs are M14 x 1.5 but I cannot find locking nuts for steel wheels, only alloys. Is anyone else's GoogleFu stronger than mine?
  4. When you push it forwards can you get drive? Do you move forwards in low range?
  5. Thanks chaps. I had considered re-purposing the sunroof switches as mine are staying shut in the vain hope they wont leak any more than the do! Just a bit unsure having the winch switches up high. Any pics of installed switches in your D2's folks?
  6. I have recently acquired a 1999 D2 and am prepping her for green laning and such like. Having never had a Disco before I am looking for ideas for mounting a winch isolating switch (simple on/off switch to activate an allbright relay) and winch in/out switch. So, what have you done and would you do it again? Pictures please!
  7. Thanks chaps but creep is really not a consideration for a winch rope, even at the speed I off road! I don't really need the latest and greatest either SK75 is ineleastic enough for my needs and I think was the material of the original bowropes that did me proud.- I will be recovering myself and others whilst laning, no full on comps for me any more. So all in all, for £100 it seems like a good option, especially as there are lots of purdy colours to chose from!
  8. OK so I have been out of touch for 8 years and need to buy a rope for a 9000lb winch. Back in the day (sigh!) it was always Bowrope. Now there seems to be a myriad of options out there from £100 to £250 with the £100 option purporting to be Dyneema: on ebay here not that I particularly want a green rope you understand! So does anyone have any real world experience of the cheaper options or best price point advice? Thanks.
  9. Thanks all - wheels (paddocks) and tyres, Maxxis 764's ordered. 2" lift waiting in the garage. Whilst alloys may be stronger, you can't fix them with a lump hammer and a cold chisel! Now just got to fit it all and get out playing!
  10. Thanks Jon. Just havering a bit on tyres - torn between expensive but known to me BFG's and less expensive Maxxis 764 or Cooper STT. How were the Coopers? I have 18" alloys so want to change to 16" and may as well go steel for durability off road.
  11. So now I have a D2 I need to sort her out for some off roading. First up is wheels and tyres. I am planning on 235 x 85 R16 BFG MT or similar in the same size. Any recommendations for steel rims that offer a sensible off set so steering lock is not crippled? Happy to cut body work / fit flares if necessary but also equally happy not to if I don't have to! Thanks! Bish.
  12. Not very rust at all Fridge - chassis is OK - not plated yet other than one out rigger so pleasantly surprised! Will need some TLC but that is to be expected given her age. Sadly a TD5 Bowie - head over heart (tsk!). Remap recommendations anyone....? Trying to find good prices for tyres at the moment..... oh, that reminds me, any recommendations for a sensibly offset steel rim?
  13. Got one - just as a I specced her - a V8 Range Rover: Errr, oh, hang on a minute...... OK , so I actually let my head rule my heart and got a cheap 5 seat Disco 2 with the 3 amigos for company. Now need to decide on Nanocom or Hawkeye and start buying suspension (2" lift), wheels and tyres (235 x 85 BFG MT on steel rims) winch bumper and winch and...... Advice on what is best for all of the above (including alternative ideas, no not you Nigel(!) ) would be greatly appreciated.
  14. Evening all. So we are heading off in the Full Fat next week for 10 days in France and [shudder] there will be two 9 year olds in the back. Being the organised type, SWMBO has purchased an audio book from iTunes for the ankle biters to enjoy. However, for us to be able to listen to it in the RR it needs to be in MP3 format. Currently it is in protected AAC format and as I am unlikely to need to do it again, I don't want to pay a lot of cash for a converter - there are plenty of them about but the trial versions only give you 3 minutes - not a lot of use for an 8 hour book! So, my question to the illustrious assembled readership is does anyone have a converter and would they be willing to convert this book? Forum donation if we can make this work! Thanks all! Bish.
  15. Thanks Steve, they'll be really helpful!
  16. Oi! I still have all my own hair! (Sorry Steve!) Would like to see more pics of that bumper please!
  17. This is where I hope I will end up, although with a lot less gubbins on the roof.! It's been a while since I fabbed bumpers so will have to break out the ceral packets again!
  18. Always going to be a V8, so don't worry yourselves on that front. I have made the Tdi mistake once and wont be going back! The D1 V8 is a good call but the lure of shag pile carpets is drawing me back to the P38 Got a few leads I am following up but wont be doing anything until the middle of August after I have successfully navigated Western France in the FFRR without my wallet expiring!
  19. Right so I am looking for a post 2000 P38 then or a non rusty D2? (definitely staying LR or I'd be looking at a 'cruiser too!) Admittedly for green laning I can't see a lack of HDC being the end of the world but cheap bolt on bits may sway me more towards the D2 as time and space for fabrication is going to be non existent for the next little while. Decisions, decisions! Thanks for all the advice, keep it coming!
  20. Hmmm, now being swayed towards a Disco 2 having experienced HDC in my L322 I am a definite convert! Accessories wise really only a front winch mount / bumper as laning solo is not a good plan without one. From a quick bit of googling it looks like I can get a reasonably close fitting one for not much money for a Disco 2 but nothing sensible for a P38. I expect it will end up being decided by what is available. Not many V8 discos. Also, is it only the 4.6's that suffer from slipped liners?
  21. Interesting about the Disco's rust - something to look out for. Not interested in interior size - I have access to all sorts of trailers and actually a bigger bodyshell means more trouble n tight lanes! Bowie is of course correct in that I secretly want to stay with a RR but I am trying to be objective! To wit: does the P38 have HDC? My googling skills have failed me on that one!
  22. So after about 8 years without off roading, I am now starting to think it is time to get back out there. Only looking at laning or Salisbury plain. My current RR is way to shiny (and fat) for that so I need to find something else. Criteria I have identified are: 1. Cheap - £3k max for the vehicle 2. Not a freelander - I know Fridge will curse me for this but they are just not for me. 3. Petrol engined (i.e. V8) - I wont be doing many miles. 4. Comfy - must be able to cope with motorway miles without deafening all occupants. 5. I'll say must be a LR product, just because I know them. So my short list is RRC,P38, disco 2. I think the RRC's will be too expensive and I've had a few of them in the past so probably down to the Disco 2 or P38. So what are your thoughts? Anything I have missed? Pros and cons?
  23. One could say it has been a while, but a divorce, house sale (and purchase) instigated a mid life crisis and I now own a Solihull product again! A bit shinier than my last rides (apologies for the carp phone pic and the ugly git getting in the way): Sadly she's a diseasel but I can live with that given the performance! So, what else is new around here then...?
