  1. Nearly 1 year. Which is why I want something for weekend use over the next couple of years that I can later use for longer vehicle based jaunts. Such as Wales, Morocco etc...
  2. Thanks for the replies. It does not need to be lightweight as it'll go in the back of the 110, for use on odd weekends and then later on trips that are vehicle based in the 110 or another Land Rover. I looked at the Terra Nova Quasar, they also do a slightly larger one called a Super Quasar and then a Hyperspace which is bigger still. Prices are not too bad with prices around 350 to 450. I'm thinking I'll need more space with the little one and other half than a 2 man, so one of the above would be ideal... it's just working out what's best and if there is anything from another top make that would be more suitable. There's more choice than when you are looking for a Land Rover! I figure if I put the Maggolina roof tent on ebay it'll more than pay for the tent and I'll get my roofrack back, as it's never been used. (Roof tent was already fitted on the camel when I got it and was brand new!)
  3. When I got the Camel, it already had a Maggiolina roof tent on it. But it means the roof rack is mostly full and it won't get used very often. So I am thinking of selling it and buying a ground tent. I've seen various threads debating which is best, ground or roof, but with some experienced campers on this site I'm looking for a reccomendation for a good ground tent for two adults and a toddler. I'm not looking for a budget option, I'm looking for something easy to put up, durable and well made. Thanks. PS. The sum of my camping experience is three weeks in an Eazi-Awn in Morocco. That's all.
  4. I've got the strengthening beams under the four rubber bungs and in between etc.. Next time I'm at a show I'll have a look at the other Camels and check. See if it's an odd one or they are like that.
  5. From what I hear they do a good quality product.
  6. The wheel sits on four rubber bungs, then a slider comes up through the bonnet with a plate and three threads on it. As you tighten the three nuts this moving part comes up to it's full travel and then if you continue to tighten up the slider pulls on the bonnet. I assumed you did the threads up all the way, but as I said that pulls the bonnet skin up by about 2cm under the wheel. I can loosen them off, but that may cause the wheel to come loose maybe ? Hence asking for advice.
  7. Hi all, Does anyone know how tight you are supposed to do the nuts that hold on a bonnet mounted spare? (300Tdi 110) I've got three wheel nuts holding the spare on, and if I do them all the way up it "sucks" the bonnet up by about 2cm towards the wheel. So I was guessing there is a perfect point between having the pressure deform the bonnet and stopping the wheel moving about. Richard
  8. My one was great, but I sold it late last year and bought a 300TDi Camel 110. It was not because of any fault of the car. I just found that it didn't have the character of the older ones with tractor type engines. Too refined, comfortable and good working air-con. What sort of Defender is that! As I don't use it everyday for commuting I've gone back to (what I consider) the more "landrovery" engine and spec.
  9. Hmmm.... I couldn't get the link to work. But when I took the dash between Ashcroft and Transmissions out it did work. http://www.ashcrofttransmissions.co.uk/
  10. You can still get: Land Rover Years (1989 to 1998) - but this is just about 10 minutes of each year and these can be found on YouTube. Better is: Great Years (1987 to 1989) is the full 45mins to 60mins of each of these years. Camel Trophy Boxset (1991 to 1998) is the full 45mins to 60mins of these years. You can't get a DVD with the full version of 1990 (Siberia) or any of the years before 1987 I believe. If anyone has them I'd be very keen to know about them. I have 1990 on VHS (but no VHS player! ) but have not seen 1986 or earlier years on VHS either...
  11. That's good, but as you asked earlier and didn't get a response... who or where at Land Rover did you contact? Or just a general enquiry through the freephone number?
  12. Not if you have the diff lock in they won't, unless something is broken. It'll drive off the jack as the rear is getting 50% of the drive and is still on the ground... That's why they have diff lock.
  13. Makes me wonder (again) why anyone uses them. I sure don't.
  14. I'm also a fan of the 255/85 as it gives you an inch more clearance under the diffs compared the size many Landrovers run. (235/85, 265/75) Which means you don't get hung up where they do. And if they get beached and dragged through you can drive it.
  15. If wider tyres give worse grip off road and more rolling resistance on it, why would you reccomend 265 over 255? They are wider.
  16. That's true, you can get them dirt cheap on ebay for a set. On both new Defenders I had the first thing I did when I got home was take the standard tyres off. In my experience they were noisy over 55mph and I replaced them with BFG All Terrains ASAP. I don't think they are very good offroad though. But happy to be proven wrong. Personally I am a BFG fan.
  17. How many miles a year will you be doing on the road with these tyres? If you are doing a fair amount, I'd be tempted to go for a track-edge type that used to be made by BFG, but the same pattern is now done by Insa Turbo. Now called the Traction Track, comes in both sizes you mention. Plus cheaper than a BFG as you say price is an issue. They are a 50/50 tyre for road and offroad.
  18. If they are not correctly aimed, you're right. However... I have adjusted the headlights on the FFRR down from the legal position when it passed the MOT as they were blinding people even in the correct position.
  19. Just get the engine number and capacity changed on your V5C. Covers you if the vehicle is ever stopped and checked against the DVLA records.
  20. I get the feeling if you need to laugh at or fall off your chair at the price, you are not in the target audience. They were not really developed for LR enthusiasts. They are available to us only because they were developed for the military who have a slightly higher budget than most of us.
  21. Can you get the vehicle through an MOT so you can transfer the registration number to a retention certificate?
  22. Who would people recommend then for good quality affordable tools?
  23. I priced up building a decent 110 5 door for the family with just the parts I wanted for overlanding. Winch, full cage, twin tanks, roof tent etc.. Cost was several thousand more than the Camel was. Hence my decision. It will also depreciate less. Turns out the Camel club are a nice bunch too. Bonus!
  24. They are also quite good for slowing down the traffic passing your house.
