At that age the original doors would long ago fallen apart so probably a retro fit (all they could find/like that type)

Nice to hear good things.

On the tomcat I left the intercooler in the front and fitted a large one (easy to clean on it's own). The oil cooler I ran a length of copper pipe to the front with some bends in it then back to the engine similar to the way BMW do on some cars as you have a lot less under bonnet heat it seemed to work well.

My dash design was a kind of cross between Tom's and standard defender but with the added complications of being able to mould it in one peice. I also kept in mind the use of standard parts to make it straight forward to fit.

The dash has a box moulded into the back much like the standard dash so reuses standard vent bits and the grey plastic bit. The only bit I don't have is a flap inside to direct from screen to feet but you could do something if you felt the need never bothered on 45 the flow seems to be better anyway.
As fitted in 45 the ibex doesn't need the grey bit as it doesn't have flaps I'm also planning to use modified disco wipers so my ducting to the vents will be different.
Dave the merc lump sounds good but as with all the suggestions I've had my worry is sorting a gearbox that doesn't go terminal at anything over 120hp.

Thanks Matt it's the moulding I made for 45 my plan is to make a few and see if they sell.Cracking build Mike. Your dash-moulding looks better than LR's effort! If you needed to top your finances up, bet you could sell a few of those!

Dave happy to chat when I see you and here is a list of the parts I used they worked for me:-
The hubs I used were 200tdi 110 front, discs were Ftc1381(not sure of fitment), stubs are drum (existing), Salisbury bolt on caliper brackets (no spacer) and 110 rear calipers.
Nigel the towing/recovery points are a modified 110 tank guard with removable tow bar.
The removable part looks a bit like the one I made for the tomcat.
You get the idea.
P.S. Dave don't worry it's getting a 200tdi for now I may change later in it's life but that will be when I can't get 200tdi parts any more.

Wouldn't it make more sense to use a disco chassis and extend the back/stiffen as necessary than to shorten then extend a 110 chassis.

I've done the disc conversion on the Salisbury now I thought I had all the right parts it turns out I did but not the parts I was planning to use. I had some early 110 front hubs and discs (discs were past there best) plus some spacers from western. So strip drums off loosely fit hubs check if spacers are right all good so far then I think great that all works but I have some new discs and another set of hubs I know I'll use them. At this point I fit the other discs/hubs only to realize I now don't need the spacer great I'd rather not have it anyway. All I need to do is nut up the wheel bearings but no that's way to easy now it appears the stub axle is to long so nut bottoms out bugger. Plan C use new discs, no spacer, early hubs (i now know are wider), original stub axles and yes it all works now I can paint the dam thing..
Now I can get the tank and guard fitted.

It might be genuine land rover hence no name on it.

I would think it's only worth it if you leave it parked for long periods. The one I've just painted for the ibex is off a d plate the outside was rusty but inside was like new and that's been stood for a year at least.

I think you maybe looking at a bespoke. Personally I would have anything longer than the roof/ifor and as lower profile as possible. Brownchurch etc make great roof racks but the windage is massive this can knock as much as 10mpg off. I swapped from brownchurch to a bespoke and mpg increased by 4miles.
Old
Bespoke(homemade)

Probably to get better coverage people who own discos etc still have roof tents but don't necessarily go in the defender forum.

I'm pretty sure 90's and 110's have slightly different ratios in the t box from memory they are:- 1.44:1 in a 90, 1.41:1 in a 110 and if someone has buggered with it 1.22:1 with a disco t box.T box should be an lt230 with 1.4:1 ratio.
All this assumes its not been messed about with by anyone!

Bill I think the comments on the llama project are more based on looks and concept. I have seen one in the flesh and I like it too, however as they never really made it past initial prototype it is difficult to gauge the mechanics so to speak. I believe there has been one built using factory left overs though I think it had a tdi.Didn't know that the Llama went away from the 101's 6 stud hubs and back to the tradition LR 5 stud !
I assume they also had smaller halfshafts too. From an opinion piece I read some years ago, the Llama was seen to be a half baked attempt(Lt77 box, 2.5 NA engine etc ) to meet the military's specifications and was unsuccessful during evaluation trials. Anyone here disagree and can elaborate ?

My disco is the same gearing etc and will pull 80 (on closed roads obviously) without to much effort however add a hill or strong head wind it will drop to 70 ish. The disco has slightly better aerodynamics but I feel it is over geared and my 110 with a 1.41:1 t-box with 33" tyres was better. So I'd say your a little down on power but your gearing is making it much more noticeable. Not really answering your question but hopefully helping with the why.

Or get a marine Morse cable used for throttle and gear applications they push and pull and are robust.

There is a fairly simple way to bypass the dim dip it's only linking some of the wires on the plug. The dim dip it's self is behind the binicle bolted to the bulkhead it has cooling fins on it they are rubbish don't work for long and no longer required.

Don't give up your an inspiration to us all it will be worth it in the end. The smile you WILL have on your face when you drive home after your first off road foray will make it all worthwhile. The 200tdi disco is the best truck land rover ever built it has everything you could ever need if I could buy a none rusty one it would be my first choice hands down. Come on Nigel get it done I promise you'll be infected forever.

Neither correct stat for engine and a good radiator with a good fan set up either electric or viscous.

The spacer as your calling it is the bearing carrier for the in put gear it's not part of the pto your pto should bolt straight up to that face at least that's how mine is (fairey 525).
Mike
Is there a way?
