  1. If you guard your house with spikes as a deterrent against thieves then that's reasonable.

If you guard your house with spikes intending to hurt thieves and gain some satisfaction, then that's seeking to dish out your own punishment and is not reasonable and therefore illegal.

That's the distinction that they have to prove in a court of law: intent. If you set out with the intention of harming someone then that's premeditated. If you react to an unforseen situation with violence then as long as it's proportionate it's fine.

  2. I heard that for modern vehicles there's only so many ways you can make an "occupant safety cage" to keep people harm-free if being hit from different angles, taking into account A/B pillars, crumple zones, etc.

The end result is that you can only style what is safe to begin with. Older cars didn't have that to contend with

  3. There is also a second filter behind one of the circular inserts you can see with the sump plate removed. This rarely if ever gets changed, although the couple i have looked at have seemed fairly clean.

    Which one is it behind?

  4. With genuine prices LR probably factors in some quality control cost + their obvious brand markup for peace of mind.

Here's my experience when I was comparing OEM, Britpart and Genuine with a crank seal http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=88004

The genuine part had a fault and they sent a new one no questions and told me to bin it, so I tend to believe you're also buying a form of insurance if it's not good quality. With Britpart it would probably have taken ages to get a new replacement.

How often do people get to see - and closely inspect two side by side? Almost never.

I do agree with Simon on this. The typical private owner isn't going to buy two/three of something expensive just to compare, even though buying online you have 14 days cooling off. Therefore they get away with it. I've done some comparisons for curiosity (as above) but mostly with < £15 parts.

A comparison of some universal joints: http://www.landroverexpedition.com/articles/universal-joint-differences/

  5. I've had a quote £160 for laid up insurance. Only 50% of the full premium so not as economical as I was expecting. This was from Adrian Flux and Lancaster/Sure Term don't want to cover if the car isn't in a garage (which mine isn't).

Any other leads for laid up insurance or what sort of price is a good deal?

  6. This guy has some sort of a mental condition as far as I'm concerned. This constant short-term thinking, rejection of reality, and no idea of what causality is, means something is missing upstairs. Is he running for some sort of a major political party as well? ^_^

Looking at his Facebook page, he's pretty young. The reality is that he probably over inflated what he was offering and didn't have the experience to know how to deal with being confronted by a customer, so lied and deflected his way through (as children do).

The fact he said "Please remove your Facebook comments now" means he doesn't know how having a Facebook page for your business works in the Web 2.0 world.

  7. Seeing as it's Newbury tomorrow, it's reminded me of dealing with a trader there once. I picked 4 items from the "Everything is £1" box. I gave him a tenner. He stood their looking confused and flustered. He said "sorry mate I didn't go to school; maths isn't my strong point". His friend came over and told him to give me a fiver and a £1 coin. He wasn't just an assistant hired for the day (he was young), it was his business....

Not everyone who has a business wants to run a business, i.e. building a customer base. They only want to receive money for the objects that they have, which other people badly want. Unfortunately this is a lot of the "dismantle a broken vehicle and sell the bits" industry.

  8. All these firms are wholesalers, as has been said. They buy items in bulk from a variety of makers. Some will be reputable companies who may have made the parts concerned for the original car maker, and some will be companies in the Far East making the parts to a specification they have been given. That specification may be reduced from the original to lower costs, and also firms in the Far East are well known for gradually and secretly reducing quality during a production run. Unfortunately the wholesaler can not open and inspect all of the items he receives, and it is left to the end user to find out whether the item is any good or not. It is all part of the disadvantage of ceasing manufacture in Europe and sending it to the Far East.

Because of the size of the Land Rover spares market it seems particularly troubled by poor quality and dishonesty. I looked recently at some parts on the internet. Britpart £12, Land Rover in a Land Rover box £54. Not difficult to see why Britpart still sells despite the reputation.

The lower costs are also in part because checking the suitability and quality of an aftermarket part is the buyer's responsibility. Therefore we get a lower cost because we take on the risk that the supplier doesn't need to bear. LR does have to check all parts are good enough as a vehicle manufacturer, so they have to foot the bill and therefore things cost more.

This is why some Britpart parts may be okay and some are awful, because the risk may go in our favour and sometimes it doesn't.

  9. Still waiting for island 4x4 to reply

Sent them numerous emails and no response, also tried phoning but just get recorded message nobody bothers to answer

That's the last time im using them for anything and I have spent a lot with them lately

I had a similar experience with them, but did get a refund in the end

  10. I've had to replace 3 in 5 years - all genuine parts. They crack around the bulging areas top and bottom, then slowly leak. I've tried different levels of tightness on the hose clips but to no avail.

Now I just live with it! Yours sounds a bit more extreme so give it a go, but don't expect it to last forever.

  11. That may be the case, although I don't think it's an easy job to remove the flange from the shaft - you might as well just change the pump.

Mine failed halfway through Spain, so I had to order one by airmail and change it in a campsite. ZF is the OEM make around the £110 mark. The £60 mark might be more of a gamble.

    https://www.lrdirect.com/ANR2157-Pas-Pump-300Tdi-Rrds90-110/

Another thing to check is that there's no washers or spacers between the block and the bracket, or bracket and the pump.

  12. I need to order a V8 spec chassis for my 110 as the engine/gearbox is V8 fitment. As such they will only supply with fittings for the old style metal tank, they are unable to supply me with a chassis with V8 engine/gearbox mounts but the Td5/Tdci tank mounts. Apparently they get them from GKN like that, I thought they were buying new Tdci spec chassis and then modifying them themselves but it seems not.

Interesting. Can't really think why GKN would be doing that.

My truck is a 300tdi 130, a lot of people have said go with the plastic fuel tank my question is are they a direct replacement for steel for the pipework?

You will need the push fit connectors to work with the more modern fuel sender units. I couldn't find any separately, so bought some second hand Td5 fuel lines and cut them off. Add these onto the existing pipe. You will need to cut it down a bit, as the metal tank has connections top and side, whereas plastic tank is all on the top.

I think the fuel lines would be different, not sure about the filler pipework.

Filler pipework is different. The metal tank's filler pipe shrinks along it's length whereas plastic tank is uniform. The diameters of the connections to the tank and filler neck are different diameters between the tanks. Second hand Td5 filler parts are cheap to comeby.
