The annoying thing is I was tempted by the galv turrets at £14 each. When they arrived and didn't fit I thought i'd spend some more on some good quality ones. Bought a pair of NRC6372G from another supplier for £24 each....
...and when they turned up they were galvanised and also didn't fit! The G apparantly meant galvanised rather than Genuine.
Surely there must be some that are made to fit rather than having to drill them out?

I'm in a battle with a supplier over some Defender turrets they supplied which didn't fit - the bolt holes didn't line up with the retaining ring.
I sent them back and they got a retaining ring in to match and said it does fit. We swapped measurements and my old retaining ring (imperial), new retaining ring (metric) and chassis holes have 116mm (long side) and 89mm (short side) bolt centres. The retaining ring they got which fits the turret is 105mm and 87mm.
Who's right?
Here's the turret not fitting. Two bolts go through but the other two are out

Gents! just to make it clear
4198 will fit 110 2006 axle?
Yes if on a 300Tdi or Td5

I went today and it was nice to have a walk around and listen to some really interesting stuff in the seminars. I think the best thing was just to see owning a 4x4 from a different angle. The LR shows cross many different user groups, whereas this is more of a gathering of likeminded people. It's nice to chat without feeling like you're being sold to.
The fact there's so many other types of vehicle there makes me realise why I prefer Land Rovers. Particularly the Land Cruisers which look a bit OTT (although it's easy to get Defenders like that) and those 6x6 MAN trucks which are hardly a conspicuous way to travel...!
I think it needs to be careful in future to not go down the "accessories" route so that it only portrays the image that to drive your vehicle across the globe you need lots of expensive pieces of equipment, which would help to fuel the "all gear no idea" mentality. It should be more about the desire to see new cultures and getting outside your comfort zone.

There are 2 types of slave cylinder for an R380 (at least for a Defender) where the cylinder needs to be matched to the push rod length. A cylinder for a long push rod with a short push rod wouldn't disengage the clutch fully.

I had a rear prop with a seized UJ which wore the pinion bearings. I only noticed when I took the prop off and felt it, and the diff only started making a noise when I put a new prop on.
The new prop may be unearthing a new symptom? As above AKA Tbox or diff

This might help. Looks like a 200Tdi but says 300Tdi in the title also
-
My 300tdi isn't too comfortable being below 60 in 5th and above 50 in 4th. The biggest hills require a runup. If I was towing something heavy on the motorway I'd be in 4th which would mean going at 50. (1.2 tbox)
But the noise levels are good when cruising

It's not too involved:

Would it be easier to put the panels from the 1992 vehicle on the 2002 vehicle?

Ah! interesting
Thanks

Sod it
I was hoping my 1948 centre steer td5 would slide through unnoticed
Lol

There was a lot of stuff at Billing this year. I think the quality of the jumble relates to the weather. I've been at a wet Billing where there wasn't much being sold.
-
Was it just on the most recent tank of fuel? In which case it may just be an anomaly. I get a big MPG dip if I do a long motorway journey into a headwind.
-
I have the TD5 pump but could pass that on. Where can I get hold of the ROW set up and what would I need. Part no's would be fantastic.

Also search the part number on google for more options. Its about £100. A shame as it's only a bit of moulded plastic!

Or clutch down. Sometimes the lever doesn't go in because the cogs aren't aligned. Letting the vehicle roll a bit when disconnected from the engine can unmesh the drivetrain. Otherwise it may be a seized lever as western says

A lot of fuss over nothing. Caravans can be pretty dangerous things so who wouldnt want a test that ensures it's roadworthy? It'd only cost "hundreds of pounds" if there was something actually wrong with it. If it then becomes too expensive, just buy a trailer tent and go camping
-
Have you tried rolling forward a bit with the gearbox in neutral?
-
It's easier to get rusted screws out of a plastic one
I don't think there's much other benefit to warrant changing from one to the other

The hi/lo stick changes the ratio of the gears in the transfer box (second gearbox). The diff lock acts on the central diff, also in the transfer box. So changing an axle diff does not affect the factory operation of these functions.Lastly, this is probably a stupid question, if I upgrade to Ashcroft or ARB will the Hi/Lo gear shift allow these to go into lock mode (by moving it to the left, like done for the factory dif)? Advantages of what/why you recommend is appreciated. If you mean you want to set the axle diff lock to engage when the central diff is engaged then you may be able to mock something up, but it sounds like a lot of work for something which gives you less control over the diff locks.

Can't comment on genuine but am starting to become wary of 'OEM' for 2 reasons.... firstly who says that is true, and secondly, like with brake pads, one company can make several versions of the same thing quality wise. Genuine porsche pads are not the same as aftermarket textar pads for porsche..... Just because they're made in the same factory doesn't necessarily mean much.....
I've come to believe that OEM means "overly expensive mistake" rather than "cheaper genuine"

Top gear last night had a feature about the Porsche 911 going through a similar situation to the Defender:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b037x8f7/Top_Gear_Series_20_Episode_5/
It won't necessarily be the end of the car because there'll be a new market of people wanting to make the new Defender like the old one(!)
Can I put 2 new AT's on the front & keep the MT's on the b

A interesting fact about the LT230 from Ashcroft - the centre diff can self destruct in 5-10 seconds of one prop spinning with the other stationary
