  1. I've just had a guy at the door ask if I wanted to sell my Defender. He had a piece of paper and pen in his hand and his 61 plate 90 was on my drive. I said no, he said thanks and drove off straight away.

From his piece of paper, I can only imagine that he had a hit list to target, which means they might have seen me (and others) around town, clocked the reg number and found my address. I live in a cul-de-sac and the Defender is mostly obscured behind the house so there is no other reason he would be here.

Can people easily find out where you live from your reg number? The encounter all happened within 5 seconds and was the last thing I was expecting on a Sunday afternoon, but in hindsight I have a lot of questions I would have liked to ask him.

I feel slightly flattered and at the same time not sure whether to keep the vehicle somewhere else for a while... Has anyone else had this before?

  2. I have the AA app on my phone, report your breakdown and they pin point you on a O.S map. I would have thought the RAC would have the same thing.

I used this once and they said they couldn't use it to locate me. Then they asked if I would let them locate me via the mobile signal. Pretty clever stuff

  3. I bought an allmakes prop recently and after 100 miles it was making a hell of a racket. I took the UJ off to find it was scored on every journal - seemingly from poor installation. Fitted a new UJ myself, sent the damaged one back and got a refund, albeit bugger all... It kept it on the road without having to wait.

  4. If the biting point is moving then it could be a hydraulic issue (although it usually moves lower than higher). Anything to do with the master cylinder being faulty, flexible pipe expanding, slave cylinder faulty, a fluid leak or old fluid.

Further along the chain it could be the release fork, but this usually shows as an immovable pedal. Then to the release bearing that might be breaking and/or not moving along the splines smoothly. The clutch plate/pressure plate/flywheel are the last in the chain and if had been recently visually inspected to be in good condition, then it's less likely to be them and something further up the system.

My breaking release bearing caused the clutch to slip and a high pitched noise when depressing the clutch pedal, details here: http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=70346

If it's not hydraulic then you will probably have to split the engine/gearbox to find out. It's doable on a driveway with an engine crane.

    Does it make any noises?

  5. My brake disc has been wearing across most of the face except about 5mm on the outer edge. Pads, discs, pistons have been replaced and it still does it. I've found out it's because the holes for the brake pad pins have enlarged and the brake pad now drops away from the edge of the disc towards the centre. Only a new caliper will really solve this.

In your case it's probably pistons, but agree with above that replacing everything is the best option.

  6. The last time I had to do one by moving the gearbox back it didn't want to go all the way on either. After a good few hours I just got fed up with it, grabed hold of the chassis rails, put both boots on the back of the gearbox and rammed it forward with a jiggle with all my might and it slid on with annoying ease.

I had an identical experience. I think it was down to the gearbox input shaft being a tight fit in the spigot bush. I could hardly get the clutch alignment tool out of the bush once in the flywheel, whereas when I trial fitted it to the bush beforehand, it was fine.

Fitting the bolts and trying to pull it towards the bellhousing didn't do much. I had to wiggle the gearbox updownleftright from the end to eventually get it in.
