We have a Defender here that we have converted to 3,9 V9 automatic from a discovery. It runs great but heats up very quickly. When we leave it idling without driving it, temp goes up to the last white line on the dial, so that's OK. When we drive it it's around that line as well. But if we have driven it and let it idle after that it start going up and goes just over the red mark. The engine has been reconditioned with all new bearings, piston rings, seals, waterpump, camshaft etc. It has a new 19J TD radiator, but we have now discovered that the radiator has a little bend on the underside, could that cause troubles with the water flow? I've now taken the visco fan off and replaced that with two 150 watt electric fans, that helps a few degrees I think, but not enough. I've just done a test for combustion gasses in the coolant and luckily there are not. I've taken the heart out of the thermostat to see if that makes a difference, it doesn't. We have a puma bulkhead in this car, with puma heater and aircon. The routing of the hoses was a little difficult and I was affraid there may be some air left in the system but the heater heats up within a minute of starting the cold engine, even without the thermostat. That seems strange to me as well.. Anyone ideas?

We always burned out all sealers with the blow torch. But nowadays we have bulkheads put in a pyrolyse oven. This should burn away all paint, sealers and waxoil. After that we have it sandblasted again, but when the bulkhead is in good condition this isnt necessary

Didn't get any updates off lr4x4, so haven't been here for a while.. Did you guys see the photo of the puma 90 with old registration on his facebook? He offered that car for sale some time ago, and on the photo's from the chassis you could see a weld crossing the VIN number. Can you check the registration of this car online somewhere in the UK? Who can we inform about this car.. It probably has been stolen somewhere.. If anyone knows Edwards private address, could you PM that to me. I would like to send him a letter from my lawyer..

I have the same problem... but with the ignition off i should be reading zero volts at the - ignition coil side with the battery + on the other side of the voltmeter but i get 12..... can any body suggest why this is?

I've bought a LHD Puma bulkhead complete with dash of him a few months ago. He didn't want to ship it, I should collect so that sounded thrustworthy. So I paid him the money and sent a courier. When the courier arrived the bulkhead wasn't ready. They told the courier that they didn't understand why I sent my own courier while they had offered to ship it to me.. He should come back the next day. Next day the courier arrives but they said the bulkhead was somewhere in the back now and the couldn't reach it and he had to wait. AFter an hour my courier left. A week later he went to collect the bulkhead again and it was ready, all wrapped up in black plastic. Ofcourse I had to pay my courier three times now.. When the bulkhead arrived here in Holland I found out there was only a bulkhead, and the outer shell of the dash, but all important parts, the parts that we bought the bulkhead for were missing. All smaller plastic bit missing, no heater, no airco, no clocks, nothing. After complaining to Edward Barrington he offered to send me the missing parts. After asking for them every day for a few weeks he said they were collected and on there way to me. Ofcourse nothing had arrived. So I started contacting him again. I have asked him everyday for a tracking number for weeks and everyday he said he had forgotten about it and he would send it to me the next day from work. After another two weeks he said the parts would be collected that week and he would send it with express delivery. After asking for a tracking number he said that on this economy delivery there was no tracking possible. Ofcourse I never expected the missing parts to arrive, but I will take all possible measures to make him sorry..

No, I don't think a puma has an inertia switch? Should I hear the fuel pump in the tank run when I turn on the ignition? I hear nothing.. I'm not used to Puma's..

Hi, I've repaired a badly crash damaged Defender. I have replaced the chassis and front axle and bodyparts but didn't do any work at the engine because I couldn't see andy damaged parts. Today we've tried to start the engine for the fist time and it fired straight up (after standing for 6 months) but died after 20 seconds or so. Now the engine will cranck but does not fire. SDD doesn't show any DTC's. Does anyone hae an idea what could cause this?

HAHA 4 years later.. I've taken the old Defender out of the garage to try and repair it again. Only thing I didn't change at that time was the F.I.P.. I have now had it reconditioned and the engine is running fine again! I've just finished reconditioning a 300 TDI engine (except for the F.I.P) and this one seems to have the same problem, so probably another FIP problem....

HI, the engine is running!! We have fitted another wiring loom and it fired right up! There must have been some kind of fault in the old loom. It has caused me a lot of headache, but now I'm happy again!!!

I've now tried my ecu in someone elses car. As soon as I plug it in the relay clicks. But it does that with the original ecu as well. I've checked several cars, and they all click as soon as I plug the ecu in. I've borrowed another ecu, and still no luck. I've wired everything to the car now, instead of all temporary wires, but still everything the same Now I have really run out of options I'm affraid..

Yes, I know. I have checked the relays. They are the right type with the linked connections and the diode. I've checked if the connection are linked, and they are. But the problem is already there before the relays, the ecu doesn't provide the earth to the fuel relay. Should the main relay click as soon as you connect the brown wire?

Yes, as soon as I put the big brown on 12v I get a click.Even without ignition live. That is not supposed to happen? Relays were on the loom, but I've tested them and they are OK, I've tried other relays, same problem.

Hi, Test 1 and 2 are both OK. I have the wiring straight from the battery to the ecu, I don't use the keys.

I'm in the Netherlands, so that is a bit of a problem.. there are not that many 3.9's around here... The only think that I can think of is the ECU, but I've tried the ECU in someones Range Rover and it starts...

took the whole loom apart. Checked every wire for continuity. Everything OK. 12 volt to all vital parts, earth to all vital parts. No reaction when I put 12v on the swicthed input. No earth on fuel pump relays. Temporary earth to fuel pump, pump runs. I've put a LED on one of the injectors, no pulse when I crank the engine. Checked the wire from the coil to the ecu with the inline resistor for 10th time, everything OK. No success, I really cannot think of anything else to check now...

PFF, did all the checks. Everything OK. But still no earth on pin 16 off the ecu when I switch on the ignition, so the fuel pump still doesn't run. I'm about to give up and fit the carburettors of the 3.5.....
