  4. I have been rebuilding an 86 lr90, and its getting there, The one main area which I have no history from is the reto fit Disco 200Tdi I want to have at least some confidence in the engine. So I have come to the conclusion, I need a new/refurb one. I can get a Stripped engine from Turners for a cool 2k or found a chap called McDonald land rover (Shropshire) who claim to supply a turn key engine, in which case I'd put a Defender 200 in it instead - and they say it will be around 3k, looked at TGV engines but I really want to stick with LR. I'm fairly confidant I can re-build a stripped engine, but in the long run with that cost me more than a fully rebuilt engine - also would be maybe sceptical of the quality/age of the rebuilt engine's parts...? Does anyone know of a reputable Engine shop? Or done this?
  5. yup, totally appreciate your angle. yeah it wouldn't be a breeze thats for sure, if i could get it for a bargin then considering it as a land rover in its own right it would be good. I could do with another engine for my Defender. Yeah it would be a long job too, I think the roof rack and cage can be found/made, but of course at a cost. I was just looking at some "regular" disco's and to be honest i could get a better one for the price and build a replica... but it still gets me mildly excited to think about where its been...
  6. Won't be getting it to chop it about, I have a perfectly good 90 to do that too sat presently in bits due to the nugget that had it before me doing too much chopping about. I'd be getting it in mind to restore to a "proper" camel - as at the moment it doesn't have any of the refinments of an expedition vehicle. Will have to see. I like the idea of its "pedigree" and the its possible history if I can find out somthing about it.

  8. I've fired a few questions to the club, see what they come back with. How many vehicles has that Mike guy got!! a tad unfair to have soooooooo many. I don't think it does have its roll cage. I presume it would be obvious if it did. Doesn't appear to have the camel cut either. I appreciate the advice, I'll let you know how I get on.
  9. HAHA, oh dear, I really don't need encouragement. Its a Disco, that looks like its be "civilianised" i.e. its been painted a standard colour and had all the nice bits taken off it, so from the outside it looks like a standard Disco... apart from the reg. which indicates it was a Trophy vehicle and you lift the bonnet and the engine bay and under some of the panels like rear door are painted Sandglow. Also got wounds in the roof and rear door where the roof rack and ladder where fitted. Would be a brilliant project but I've already got a defender in bits on the driveway! Whats the going price of a Camel Disco do you know? cheers
  10. I have the chance to own/restore one and I think its a quite rare opportunity... I'm trying to justify it. But the timing is not great - do chances like this happen twice?

  15. OK i did some googling and found, Mr Clarence Spicer and Mr Hardy Spicer aren't related... but they appear to have a common interest... automotive drivetrains. So i guess that answered my question. Dane Spicer - webpage extract From the 1940's, Burwood Victoria (Australia), Hardy Spicer began operating as a specialist in driveline components to service the automotive industry. We expanded our capabilities over the years and also incorporated hydraulics products to compliment the services required by our growing compliment of customers. GKN/Hardy Spicer - webpage extract During the spring of 1902, while designing a motor car for a class project, Clarence Spicer, then a sophomore at Cornell University (USA), explored ways to improve the transmission of power from the engine to the wheels. At that time, motor vehicles were powered by two sprockets connected by a chain, similar to the workings of a bicycle. This system was not only difficult to lubricate, but loud and unreliable, as well. Finding a better way to transfer power, Clarence placed reinforced universal joints on either end of a tubular shaft. Encasing the u-joints in bowl-shaped housings retained their lubrication and protected them from road debris. These never-before-seen improvements to the cardan u-joint were engineered into Clarence’s prototype which was later issued a U.S. patent in May of 1903.
  16. By Hydraulic PTO you mean... fitting a hydraulic pump to your transfer box output and a motor to your dif and connecting them via flexy hose?

  18. Ok, I'm into my UJ's at the moment and I'm looking into the verious manufacturers, now is there a connection between Dana Spicer and GKN/Hardy Spicer or is it just a weird coincidence that 2 rather large UJ manufacturers share the same name? cheers Mav
  19. Hello, attched is a VIN plate, can someone explain what the numbers are in the boxes below the main Number? I presume thats capacity in kg? Cheers
  20. How are they lubricated without nipples? self lubing materials sounds a bit too out there for LR?

Good point - generally though bearings need a good rigid base to work properly - especially rollers, if the outer cup is deforming (due to being too thin then this will leed to premature bearing failure. Its got to be balanced (strength in shaft to bearing surface), and I guess as the original LR prop shafts used GKN bearings then it was for a reason. It was more an observation, i might be completely wrong.
  22. I was changing the UJ's on my LR90 front and rear props. One was a GKN original the other was a non branded part. I noticed quite a distinct difference between the quality, its illustrated in the attached photo: Lower cup is GKN, and its almost twice as thick as the upper non branded part. Lesson:- purchase good quality UJ's
