  1. There's quite a few questions there. Might I suggest having a flick through the tech archive first? - also an observation, when you say expadition do you mean deepest darkest Africa or somewhere a little less remote? A general good rule of thumb for Overland type vehicles is to keep them as standard as possible, so when/if you breakdown, you have a better chance of getting it fixed up, rather than needing exotic parts.
  2. I had a similar problem on my Transplanted 200Tdi, when accel pressed the engine just started to smoke and ultimatly just flattend out. I replaced the fuel filter and it cured it. the filter was full of pretty dirty fuel contaminated with water and dirt. Have you put a new filter in it? How clean is your tank? you could have a restriction on the fuel pickup, in which case it could idle ok, until it sucks harder? have you checked the fuel pipes all the way to the tank pickup?
  3. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with these ABS plastic wing replacements?? http://www.britpart.com/newsstory.asp?PageRef=10&NewsRef=44 Cheers Mav
  4. Nice job... you make it look easy with all the tools!
  5. ok found some pictures, can anyone explain how you shim the bulkhead mounts, to be it looks like you just bolt it to a pre-defined turret type affair?
  6. hmm ok,- wednesday isn't a good day for starting bun fights To do it properly, use both rules which will alow you to verify that your wireing is ok to take what you want to put on/in it.
  7. I have a simlar problem at the moment on my 90 (- although the doors didn't line up when I got it after it just had a semi re-build - not by me). I've been checking the parts manual out for a diagram of how the bulkhead is actually attached to the chassis, but can't find any decent graphics, does anyone have any pictures of the mounting points and or how the bulkhead is fixed.
  8. To work out the rating of components in an electric circuit you can use P=I*V where P-Power (watts) I-Current (amps) V-Voltage (volts) So your Power is 220w/12v (worst case) = 18.33 amps (drawn off the battery) In real life you battery will probably provide between 13-14 volts which decrease your current even more. So as long as all your components on that circuit are rated for 18.4 amps or more then you will be fine. a standard 12v 30Amp relay should do you. Personnaly I like to fit 40Amp ones just in case I want to put more lights in a circuit or put high power bulbs in. mav
  9. Hello The rear tub on my 90 needs binning or work... the rear right wing is shot so are both rear quater pannels including the right galvanised flash corner. Its also like a sive due to old rivet holes. Now any opinions on wether its easier for me to repair the present tub, or fit a 2nd hand one? - how easy is it to whip the present tub off and put another on? cheers
  10. Looking at changeing my radius arms on my 90, trying to work out what type I have. Can anyone tell me the width of the early type and the width of the later type? - measured at the axle end. Cheers Mav
  11. be intrested in a copy if ur still distributing. Cheers
  12. LR90, 87 Reg with Disco 200Tdi Got a seriously mangled rear quater panel. Looking at replacing the panel - option A, or replacing the whole tub - option B. As the original rear quater panels are spot welded to to inner sill panel, whast the best way to repair/replace the wing. As Alu skin, kinda rulled out the spot welding, so I guess my only option is to rivet it neatly!?? What kinda rivets should I be looking to use, I was thinking something along the lines of sealed alu or stainless rivets. would I get corrosion problems using stainless ones? Can anyone give me any advice on replacing rear quater panels? If I go with option B, will a TD5 rear tub fit the same as older types? Cheers Mav
  13. Try AW transmissions too, I just got them to build be a short bell R380, not fitted up yet, but was extremly happy with service and delivery time and it looks the part.
  14. 87 reg 90 on Galvy chassis. Looking at fitting a twin tank. Checked the archive and searched several good threads about using TD5 rear tanks. The problem I have is I don't want to have to start welding to the chassis if I can help it. Now bar buying a safari equipment type tank, are there any other options out there that don't reqire chassis welding? - but using standard LR parts? How different is a 110 rear tank mounting setup? can you fit them into a 90? Cheers Mav
  15. If you want some pictures of what it looks like without dash, let me know, I got pretty much all the interior out at the mo. mav
  16. thanks for the advice people, your comments have confirmed my thoughts that the best way will be to get it transported down. Then its legal and safe. No point in taking silly chances.
  17. 87 Reg Defender with Disco 200TDI Ok just trying to sort my electrics out as they appear to be in mess. Can anyone Identify this please, forgive my ignorance as to what it it. I know its a fuse holder, but is that a high rated fuse? I found it behind the dial consol. Cheers Mav
  18. Ok, looking at acquiring a Defender 110 for re-build/donor vehicle. The landy is in working condition but failed its last MOT on some chassis issues. Now the problem I have is, its presently 150 miles from where I want it. Do I have any other options to move it other than towing it or using a vehicle transporter? - also anyone know any good Auto transporter companies in North East Scotland? Cheers Mav
  19. Cheers guys, i'll be going to get an impact driver tommorow. Any tips for aligning the door properly?
  20. Alright, Got my 86 Reg defender 90. Its had 2nd hand button push doors fitted (quite badly) over its original internal set handle doors. The doors have been put on level with the body at the bottom and now there is a gaping gap around the top of the door, also the slight curviture on the door does not line up with the body curves. Firstly are the doors interchangable from different years?, also how do you adjust the door hinges, are the dirty great big cross head screws tapped straight into the bulkhead? do you need something like an impact driver to get them out? Mav
  21. Problem is sorted, changed out the fuel filter and the lift pump, bled the air out and its back to normal. Thanks for all the advice chaps happy bunny once again.
  22. Hi guys, just had a similar starter problem on my 200Tdi, I took the starter off the other day and found it was frozen solid, it had some water that had frozen and stuck the motor contacts amongs other things... had to leave it somwhere warm before i could actually dismantal it fully. Tottaly cleaned the unit and its now ready to go back in minus the water and plus a lot more greese. We've been having temps down to -15 up here and the whole thing is freezing up. Just a suggestion.
