  1. Just seen this thread, Can I tell a story then ask Mr Trafic Policeman what can be done? Recently I was driving along a road long straight road with lots of 'hidden' dips I had a lady from work with me and I spotted a car coming up fast behind me, well several cars behind me. it nearly hit two or three with poor overtaking then clipped me (not in landy thank god) then proceeded at speed to do the same to other before disappearing very fast past a flashing 30mph sign on the edge of the village. The girl I was with was as livid as i was and got on her blackberry and emailed the 'bad driving reporting thing' for our police (Sussex) they came back and thanked us and said the vehilce was 'unregistred.' This is a major loophole, the car was not nicked, so whoever sold it had told DVLA but whoever bought it gave duff info or no info at all, I cannot understand this major loophole has never been filled. this guy can drive around with no tax/mot/insurance/nicking fuel/partaking in crime until he either gets caught red handed or crashes? the police told us they could do nothing until he happens to 'bump into a police car' is this right? Sorry this is a bit off topic but it makes me livid.
  2. Lazy day, I did top my washer bottle up! But also took my two year old out for a drive on our favorite circular route, we did go and tyre kick my father in laws unrestored forward control. One day, one day.
  3. 'Wise advice? - As you say there are many views on things, some more valid than others.' Everyones view is valid even yours, you don't have to agree with it.
  4. Our local Police have at least two late model td5 LWB, I used to often see them out following hunts sabs who where following the hunt who where following the hounds who where following the fox, I have never seen one off road or even vauguely dirty.
  5. mmmm that is bit harsh to quote some wise advice on another thread. There are many views and most of them have valid reasons.
  6. I am really pleased it is not just me, I always have a chain and strop/shackles on board but I never admit that to strangers, it is a bit like jump starting apart from anything else it is a total pain in the backside having to take the seat out and then the metal lid thing and then listen to the 'that's a funny place to have a battery' often felt like replying 'funny place to leave new battery........in the shop'
  7. I am glad it is not just me being not keen on towing strangers.
  8. Yes they had already rung the police and the car was in fact gone by lunchtime. They where grateful for a lift to work.
  9. I am sure lots of you have been busy pulling people out of the snow these last few weeks, however I have a question of morals.# Aside from the fact that for 355 days a year we are 4 x 4 (insert offensive word) now we are everyones mate! But in this increasing 'sue you as quick as look at you society' (which I hate) where does one stand in this situation for example I was taking my normal route to work up a single track lane going up a hill and on a double bend there was a car that had come down wrapped around a tree. two squaddies from the local army base who I pass most mornings had lost their ford focus. They flagged me down I stopped and saw that the car was undrivable and they where unhurt. 'Could I pull them out' well I could but with a front wheel missing there where going nowhere, a double bend on slipery conditions I failed to see the point, I stood a good chance of been hooked up and being hit by the next person to come along. I explained and offered them a life to their base which they readily accepted. Does anyone else have a view on this. Having had plenty of problems at work with lorries stuck on what looked liked a tiny piece of ice towing a loaded 44 tonne bulker (with a tractor or two) is very harzardous procedure. We had a fuel delivery the other day and he got stuck by our tank he refused a tow on H and S grounds and insisted on chipping out with a plastic shovel -good luck with that then. One does want to help but one does need to consider your own vehicle and possible damage to you and it. I have pulled a few friends out and given the odd lift, i picked up our receptionist the other day much to the anoyance of her merc driving low profiled tyred estate agent husband who always looks down his nose at us agricultural types, he look quite cross form behind the net curtains!!
  10. I am sure they tech guys that have written about are on the right lines but on a much more simplistic level Open roads? No one about? where you going much faster than normal, tyre pressures? just a thought.
  11. Yes most anoyning when they are right!! I can measure my boost if you like, or is it on the spec sheet? I have not got my book with me?
  12. There should be two nuts? One for each side of the door a small 'stay' stops it trying to turn around if the motor becomes loose, however if its tight enough it should not move, good luck with drilling the hole.
  13. To be honest I don't know where the boiling point is on mine, I just know 'where it normally is' Having boiled a car in my student days I do keep an eye on it quite regularly.
  14. True but as long as the needle is on 30 or below you are sure to ok!!
  15. Having drowned my locks in WD40 and other lubricants for a previous issue with my door, I will be putting vaseline around the rubber seal today.
  16. In my td5 and in previous 90 the gauge would just be vertical when 'at about the right temp' however I was taught something many years ago when working in a large ships engine room which had a massive bank of gauges (over 300!) the engineers could not 'read' everyone the gauges had massive ranges some 0-3 others 0-1000, they where measuring all sorts of things temps, volts, pressure, amps, revs a whole host of things, howver when whatever they where measuring was at 'normal' they would be vertical so if you look across a whole bank of gauges you could see straight away if one was 'off' range. When you look at a clock you don't look at which number the hands are on just the vague position. that is why gauges are still used instead of digital in a lot of machines, you don't want to know you are doing 26.6 mph, just under 30.
  17. My drive to work is not more than 8 miles and in current high temps (compared to some of you) of minus 5, My td5 never gets up to temp or at least the gauge does not. Is it good for it to only get to vaguely warm twice a day? I have never considered rad covers, always thought that is what people did on cortinas in the 70's I might give it a try. We shuold start reminding non land rover drivers that we all got to work during current conditions, however the first person to arrive at my place first every day is an old boy in his 70's who comes on a bike! Good old boy.
  18. We had an Exmoor trim seat in the back of previous defender, and excellent bit of kit, it passed MOT etc however I am not sure I would use it with child seats, we have a two year old and another in production so tend to take current child out with just me in car seat on passenger seat, no idea what we are going to do when next one arrives. This is not a fault of exmoor trim i just lost my nerve with it.................i know stupid nervous first child etc.
  19. Landy everytime, makes me laugh 360 days a year we are mocked as gas guzzling morons (even though some of us use our vehicles for work too) then a day dawns like tomorrow when we are everyones best mate.
  20. 54 Defender hardtop for work and pleasure, currently unknown age ex army 110 and 1973 101 -non runner project.

  21. Thanks guys, I took off the striker plate today and put it back to find it made no difference, it is certainly worse in cold weather and it was -4 over night. I certainly look forward to hearing how you get on at the 4x4 place.
  22. I agree with previous poster re bulbs check first, this happened on my old 90.
  23. The police are not interested in vehicle theft. And I agree DO NOT TALK ABOUT vehicle security on here!! No more than you would talk about where you keep your spare house key! I spoke to a guy who I ownly vaguely know who in converstion told me his immobilsar code and where he keeps it in the vehicle, I did not need to know. A friend of our has a load of hire vans stolen the police 'where far to busy' when a lady rang to say one of his van had been outside her house for a week he went to retrive it and was then stopped on the M25 for stealing it!! when he explained and proved who he was he was give an official warning for being sarcastic!! Is that a crime?
  24. I would no more put the writing on the outside than I would put my underpants on my head. Laughing aloud, soon will we have a thread on 'fitting your new spoiler on a defender'.
