  1. I have bitten the bullet and gone genuine. I first realised how awful Britpart stuff could be when I replaced my rear crank seal and it lasted all of 15 minutes before the engine almost pumped the sumps worth out through the seal. You'd have thought I'd have learnt my lesson by now!
  2. All well and good but that's a V8 in the advert and on the pics!
  3. I looked that up too. I can't think of a rover engine that had a displacement of 2.6 litres? Definitely got bits from here, there and everywhere.
  4. Yes your description is spot on. I can indeed push the door and it will bounce back off the seal. If I remove the seal it latches perfectly. I refitted my roof a little while ago and paid close attention the getting it lined up right at the front. The striker plate is adjusted right back but I think there is a lot more adjustment to be done on the hinges. The door seems to stick out a bit.
  5. I would save the hastle and guess work just send them off to get them done by a specialist who will be using calibrated equipment. I would not trust the accuracy on an unknown pop tester given the high degree of precision required on a diesel injection system.
  6. Thank you @oneandtwo New latches, handles and strikers fitted. The opening and closing has dramatically improved. The genuine latch looked so much more well made than the Britpart one that was fitted. There is however a lot of what I would describe as bounce or play in the doors when closed. I suspect this will be down to the Britpart seals? I will fit the genuine seals when I get the time. Any advice on the play other than the door seals?
  7. I would get a set sorted out with new nozzles and calibrated as a priority. It may do little for your smoke problem but these engines do not tolerate poor injector spray and a lapse in service regime. Poor spray causes irratic combustion and is one of the causes of cracks in pistons and the head. I had a melted piston in a 19J I bought to rebuild and the injector looked to be in awful condition.
  8. Do they do so by post? There seems to be a shortage of good diesel specialists near me who will do this for a reasonable price. Do they also recondition injection pumps?
  9. Eventually I found what I think might be the best way to report it. We'll see what happens....
  10. Ebay's drop down lists for reporting items are very restrictive. I have no evidence to say it is stolen. For now I have asked the seller to clarify. Here is a screenshot of my message. We'll see what he comes back with. It might make reporting it easier. It looks a bit 1990s to me, but I'll stick with 1987.
  11. White diesely smoke is the injection too far retarded. Black smoke and a bit of knock is injection too far advanced. A set of recon injectors goes a long way with these engines to help keep them running well.
  12. Timing. I suspect it may be a little retarded.
  13. We never did get to see how much he was charging, erm I mean what it cost him
  14. Tomorrow I am going to sort out my doors. I have spent a small fortune on x-eng xtrouser striker plates, genuine seals, genuine door latches and genuine door handles. The mechanism on even the genuine door handles seems flimsy to me. I think part of the problem on my current set up is lack of lubrication. Is it a good idea to apply some grease or silicone to the new handle mechanism?
  15. You are correct on all 3 accounts as I understand it. I've responded within their 28 day deadline to tell them I ain't paying..... I may or may not get a response, time will tell.
  16. The thing that really gets me about these letters is that they look official and quite threatening, but dangle the carrot in front of you if you just pay up it will all go away. Lots of people must just accept them and pay up. Last year I got one for my company car saying I had driven in a bus lane in Warrington. It all went quiet when I showed them a receipt for my hotel in Boston MA! They've picked the wrong person here because there is no way they will get any money out me, just hastle!
  17. They state: "smartparking Ltd believes that a parking charge notice is payable.... Insufficient paid time which is supported by the pictures of you entering and leaving the car park". So, it was a pay and display. I had a ticket for 1 hour (which I have since thrown away), their cameras show I was in the car park for 22 minutes. They have no evidence to support I had no ticket. I note they do not allege that I was not displaying a valid ticket!
  18. I'm sure this has happened to most of us. I have managed to get a Parking charge notice (not penalty charge notice) in my 110. This is from a company called SmartParking. I understand they look after car parks for Lidle, McDonald's, Asda etc. It's a joke and certainly not very smart. They haven't got my name, just initials and half my surname. They have a photo of me entering the car park and a photo of me leaving. They have no photographic evidence to support their allegation I had no valid parking ticket and they have the fields of make, model and colour as "unknown"! I have responded to their online appeal form stating the above errors on their part and explained I therefore cannot accept the allegation so will not be paying their fine. I'll let you know how I get on. Anyone had any dealings with a similar situation?
  19. I think that procrastination is a big problem with anything. If you just get on and do it, committing yourself then you can amaze yourself at what you can achieve. In terms of chassis choice Richard, I think you need to see some for yourself and see which ones you are happy with. Trouble with reviews are that everyone is measuring quality/value with different yard sticks.
  20. I agree with FridgeFreezer, YouTube can be a great source of inspiration for projects. My problem is I get an idea for a project and start planning, then something unexpected breaks which takes precident on time and funds!
  21. The split diaphragm doesn't necessarily result in leaking diesel, it just allows direct access for the air from the turbo to get past the diaphragm and into the fuel pump. The spill rail is a poor design on pre-tdi engines as it feeds into the filter head and back to the pump so the air can go from the spill rail, to the filter and up from the pump again making it tricky find the leak and to bleed the air from the system. Check all unions in a methodical way, starting with the injectors back to the filter and pump.
  22. For air to get in, it doesn't necessarily mean diesel will be leaking out. It sounds very much like it is getting in at the spill rail and the diesel will just return to the tank as the air gets in. I would first check all of the unions on the spill rails in terms of washers and no loose connections. It is also possible for a split in the boost diaphragm to cause this. Have you checked the boost diaphragm or do you hear a hiss of pressure escaping from the fuel tank when you stop to fill up?
  23. I agree with Mike, there isn't enough time or money to do everything I would like to. I haven't even managed to paint the back half of my 110 blue like the front. If I'm struggling with a particular job, it's probably because I'm not doing something right so I will post a question on here to find out what I should be doing. For inspiration, it's good to take a look at other people's Land Rovers to get some ideas.
