  1. I had a squeal, chirp noise on my 300tdi. after a long time I found out what it was. The bearing on the tensioner pully, dont know about td5 but worth a check. It turned by hand with no noise but the bearing was siezed and it was spinning on the shaft.
  2. I would not buy a V8 with half that miles unless it has had a lot of work done on it. The cam will be worn - not trying to put you off - as said a Diesel with that miles would be OK. Drive it or even better get someone who knows about V8 Defenders drive it and see what they think.
  3. I fitted an x-charge relay with two standard batteries, works fine and did not cost the earth. Depends what you want to spend ?
  4. Hope it is the rocker cover - that would be a right boost.........
  5. Thanks boys This sound a bit more involved than a 300tdi, I am sure I can do it but need to factor in more time. Did the 300tdi in a day. Thanks for all the info and the link. Frax
  6. Hi all I have been asked by a freind if I would replace his head gasket as it is leaking oil at the bulkhead end. I have done the 300tdi head and just wondered if there was much of a differance. What parts do I need and about how long will the job take. His head is not leaking into the water system, is it worth doing a re-torque ? It has done about 90k Frax
  7. Well just home after two weeks away and my new crankshaft damper pully is here. About 1 hour later it was fitted. My budgie is now dead - no more chirping
  8. Well just got home after two weeks and my new crank shaft damper pully was here so first thing this morning I was out in the garage. New pully fitted and the dreaded Budgie has gone at long last.
  9. Just ordered ot from LRSeries as I have used them quite a lot in the past and I have had good service. Thanks again Ralf.. Hope this will kill the budgie in my engine bay.
  10. Hi I am looking for the part No: for the crankshaft pulley, the one on the outside that drives the fan belt, water pump. It for a 300tdi 1995. I have been told that these have rubber in them and when they start to go they make a chirping noise. Thank you for your help. Regards Frax
  11. Why not just print one out, I did it at work double sided and just put it in a binder - Job done.
  12. Thanks for that I will have a look. I did not know that this pully was a two part thing.
  13. The metal on the bracket is good but it may need a washer as there is side play, I even wondered about fitting "O" rings so that it could still flex a bit.
  14. Hi I have a squeak coming from my engine bay, I think it is the fan belt again. I say think as I had the same noise about a year ago and replaced the belt and tensioner pulley + alternator and the squeak was gone But its back - can the belt have worn that badly so quickly ? I also have a clunk when I turn the steering which I have not been able to find, it has just had an MOT and passed no problem but the tester did find the clunk which he thinks is coming from the front tie bar - the one that goes from the chassis to the front axle, he thinks the bar is moving sideways on the axle bolt, no play in the bush though. Any ideas welcome. Frax
  15. Nice choice, thought it would be louder than it is but still a nice note and I am happy with my one. I do need to do some slight adjustment as it has started to knock on the gear box cross member when on rough roads. Sadly it is not so shiney now.....
  16. The front bumber is one of these http://www.ws4x4.co.uk/product/90110-tubular-winch-bumper I must say that I was not impressed with the powder coating though, some of it was peeling by the time it arrived so it was stripped and recoated before it was fitted. It is heavy and has done well though. Like the pictures on the blog
  17. I was also not happy with the width of steel on the rear x member, especialy when the rot sets in so when I rebuilt my 90 I made the x member with 4mm steel channel, I did enclose the back but left the ends open and drilled 1" drain holes in the bottom. It was welded on but could have been bolted. I did however galvie the thing - you will get an a look at it here http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=64578&hl=frax
  18. Was having the same problem with my 300tdi, it turned out to be a crack in the plastic plug on the radiator. It was a pain to find this leak as it only happened on long journeys to start with after plenty heat had built up. The plug top eventually parted. The 300tdi has two of these plugs so its worth a look as it is an easy fix (3/8" PSB). I was also told some time ago that the black expansion tanks are prone to cracking, usually from the brackets that hold the tank on.
  19. Found where the leak is coming from, The black plastic plug on top of the radiator - for some reason the top of the plug has split and parted with the threads --------- does anyone know where I can get one of these. Are they anything special of will any plug do the job. It's OK found some, plastic and brass what should I get ?
  20. Yes they are and I hope it will last longer than me so I should not need to remove it with any luck.
  21. It was quite easy to fit, I started at the manifold and worked my way back leaving all the clamps loose. The pipe slots togeather and is a very good fit. Clamps are good quality and the hangers worked well. The hardest part was getting the hangers on the rubbers. Where it goes over the back axile there was a hanger bracket which was not used on my one, in total 3 hangers were used - one each side of the silencer and one at the tail pipe. The hangers at the silencer are part of the clamps which are U Bolts (like a standard clamp). Where it bolts to the manifold the flange is able to turn so you can position well then clamp up. The clamps are all like this Hope you can see these
  22. May try some rad weld in it and see what happens, I will do no harm to try.
  23. Hi all. I have been running my 300tdi for over a year now and the coolant level never stays anything like full. When I top up the expansion tank to about 1/2 way and go for a drive I loose coolant level, the expansion tank will almost empty with only about 1/2" left in the tank showing. I can drive like this for weeks and the level never changes - It runs at normal temp and has never overheated. Topped it up this morning and went for a drive, just to get home to find steam coming from under the bonet, had a look and the level of coolant had dropped to its usual place. I have the white expansion tank fitted so easy to see the level. Do you think the cap is faulty or are they all like this.
