  1. I've been cleaning up the axle bits today and after cleaning the stubs i'm thinking that they might need replacing. The part of the stub where the bearings sit is thinner than the centre, and one of them looks like the races have spun at some point. The seal land looks to be quite scored too. If they're original then they've covered 137K. Are these serviceable or toast?
  2. The seal bolts don't run through to the oil space. The lower pin bolts do, but would removing a bolt to drain cause any problems to the gasket seal on the lower pin?
  3. Indeed they are, but watch them run when there's any sign of a claim. Their record keeping is atrocious too.
  4. I haven't decided what to lube the swivels with yet, but now is the best chance to put a drain in. I can use it if i want to, and leave it plugged if i don't.
  5. Whilst i have my swivel housings off i'm pondering fitting drain holes. Does anyone have a good picture showing where the drain holes are on a Defender swivel housing?
  6. 2nd housing dismantled and no bolts snapped today Three from yesterday had to be drilled out. Buggered a remover too. Helicoils for the 3 broken bolts. Other disc shield is severely rotted, but not holed yet. Swivel seal backplate is holed though
  7. 2 for 2 to bin the shields I'll get to see how the other side is shortly.
  8. Stripped a swivel today. Took far longer than i expected too. Everything eventually came apart ok, but 3 of the swivel seal plate bolts have sheared off. Tomorrow's job will be to try and get the studs out. Interesting to find that there was only one gasket on the housing. The lower pin gasket Everything else was gasket free and stuck quite firmly together with black rtv/silicon sealant. Thank you Mr Anti-Gasket man, whoever you are Brake shield is rather holey. Should I care?
  9. I've ordered everything to rebuild both sides completely. Not cheap, but hopefully i'll not have to touch it for a while after putting it together. Can't say that i'm looking forward to the shim setting. I've noticed that pretty much everyone seems to use blue hylomar on the gaskets when they rebuild. Are they prone to leak without?
  10. What difference is the HD over non HD axle? Thicker tube?
  11. I guess this also explains why the panhard rod is larger than the non HD axle. Ordering time! At least the mists have cleared now
  12. 23M axle has a part number TAG000160 apparently. I wish i had your confidence about it.
  13. According to lrseries FTC5105 is for 20L,21L,22L,23L axles FRC7065 is for 61,61S,63L,64L axles I've got a 23M axle
  14. Hmmm. What's with the parts sellers advertising them as abs and non abs. So it should be a FRC7056 and either TAR100040 or TAR100050 for the top pin?
  15. And after more reading... From 1994-ish both ABS and non-ABS are allegedly fitted with FTC5105 and it's only the top pin that differs. Either TAR100040 or TAR100050. So i should already have FTC5105 (2003MY). Is the part number stamped on a swivel somewhere?
  16. I'm putting together a list of bits to order to replace the swivels on my 110. FTC5105 is ABS and FTC5366 in non-ABS. FTC5366 is much more expensive than the ABS one, so as i'm replacing the swivel, bearings and swivel pins can I use the FTC5105 and simply blank the sensor hole off?
  17. The shocks are original LR. With the nut wound up to the threadless part it leaves about 3-4 threads exposed beyond the nyloc. The bushes are quite compressed at the moment.
  18. You're right. I was just a bit miffed as i'd hoped to have it rolling today. Only the rear crank seal and gearbox swap left after this and then it will be drivable. I've had a look around for swivels and some kits have come up in the search. Is it safe to assume that the kits have dubious bearings in them?
  19. Put one on and cleaned up the other to find that it's rusted around the centre. New swivels time. It's not the cost of new swivels that bothers me, but the fact that what was a simple job "fix leak at bottom of diff pan" has turned in to a maintenance epic. Bloody annoying that i'll have to wait for new swivels to arrive and then bugger about fitting them and setting them up. I've abandoned it for now.
  20. It is at the very extreme of travel. I suppose i could offer it up and see how it looks. Sooooo frustrating. I've almost stopped swearing now.
  21. <rant> My front axle is pile f*%^ing sh1te! After spending some time stripping it, getting it welded up, stripping and cleaning the diff, putting it back under the 110 and bolting it up i've just run a tap through the threads ready to refit the swivel housings etc. Being pleased that the end is in sight i thought i'd clean the crud from the swivels and give them a once over. Rusted at the extent of travel in one direction. The f*%^ing thing hates me! ARSE! </rant> Other than that i'm fine.
