  1. If you can, take one for a weekend test, plan a trip in it and drive it.

There are hundreds to choose from, some good, some bad and some that are just nothing more than a rip off.

If you want an electronics free vehicle then look for a 200Tdi/300Tdi, but be warned, newest 200 will be 20yrs old at least and 300s will be 16yrs at newest!!! Your budget sets you firmly into the realms of PUMA territory, that will be the 2.4TDCI Ford engines.

It all comes down to what you want and expect from a vehicle that you say could be your daily driver? I know two guys very well who bought Defenders and within a year had sold them on and almost at a loss as they were just not suitable vehicles for them, but like so many, they aspired to "live the dream" of owning a Defender, just wasn't as great, or as comfortable as they first thought t might have been.

Just be prepared to see loads and walk away from anything that doesn't tick your boxes.

  2. Only what someone else is willing to pay for it

Chuck it up on eblag Easter time when folk get excited about getting under their landies it might score high??? This close after Xmas is usually minimal spending going on as verified by nearly all my parts suppliers ;)

  3. Looking for some alternative boots for the Rusty one, love the STTs but want something a little more A/T for the daily hum drum of life that can perform when I need so that I can save the STT for planned play days.

    Choices are.

    1.) Cooper ST MAXX

    2.) YOKOHAMA Geolander A/T-S G012

    3.) Goodyear Wrangler Dura Trac

All are less aggressive than the STT and A/T and all are available in 245/75R16 which is the chosen size, who has experience of what and what should I stay well away from?

  4. Thing is Jan has had 3 sets of watts bushes, he is hard on that thing mind!!!

Lots of off road action and front lift springs and adjusted height sensors at the back, he plans to swap out to coils as he wants a bigger lift but said that the watts bushes get eaten now, what happens when it's lifted further?

This truck will spend 50/50 on/off road not like the rest of us where they spend 90% on road and as little as 10% off  Hence looking for an alternative with less bushes, ie, panhard rod, that will last as long as the bushes in the front panhard which are still original, or back to the older "A" frame and ball joint for proven rear end tech that works.

  5. D2s have rear radius arms and a "Watts linkage", is it possible to get rid of the watts for a panhard rod or go back to an "A" frame and ball joint on a D2 rear axle?

Has anyone got rid of the pesky watts for something that lasts?

  6. Basic it might be but it is never the less true! I have two papers to fill out to declare the car to them for taxation then it will be €2200 in the year to ride on the highways, insurance is something around €900, so although I see why you like it in the UK for the 1/10th road tax and the 1/4 of the insurance but, I have no intention to settle here for more than a few years, but, gotta keep eyes and ears open for the future opportunities ;)

Looking to head further east in Europe, not sure where but up and coming economies and countries need skilled staff too, might just find one friendlier toward off roading too

  7. Anyway Nigel, speaking of great places, how do you find holland? :SVA go away:

    Daan

    Geweldig :stirthepot::SVA go away:;)

I like it here, now that we have got the papers straightened out from Belgium and have only the belatingdienst to satisfy then it will be all systems go on the bucket getting poured away, best bit for me here is that Budel is only 5kms fro my door and they hold a fair amount of events there to go play :D

  8. So who managed to tip a little bit out of their bucket in terms of adventures had?

    I know I didn't :(

How much of the lakes did Daan get to?

Has Anderzander fixed his bucket enough to hold his dreams?

Did Garrymorris get to the Milau bridge in France?

Ross and his 45Gal barrel filled to the brim?(guessing not, I spent most of this year reading about him fabbing out his workshop and dismantling that poor thing)

Turkey tickled Mo Murphy's fancy, but how close did his 90 get?

Post up your ticks and misses :D

  9. Been off for a hunt through the web, rebuild kit RTC5834 is €50 or a whole new MC NTC4991 is around €135

I only looked at OEM parts not going down the pattern death parts TRW/ Lucas or gen Land Rover only, incidentally a genuine LR MC is €350 :o

  10. Problem with the brakes today, first time on the road in almost 6months and an hour long ride to the RDW Keuringcentrum in Elsloo to get my papers stamped and the starter turning on getting the yellow plates on.

Trouble is, the brakes stick on, not like a seized caliper, but I have to hook the pedal up with which ever foot is free to stop braking, whats gone wrong? I would like to get that sorted before I actually get plates on it as all I'll wanna do is drive once we can go again.

  11. I removed the trailer socket a long time ago when the plough came off.

The only issue is that I don't have a dash warning lamp at the moment, is this a common type of relay? I don't have a spare and as I have never seen one before I am not sure I can get one either?

  12. Ok it was 22:30, started the Rusty one to shunt onto the landing strip in front of the apartment so I could empty it ready for tomorrows safety test tomorrow, problem, the dash warning for the indicators is flashing, but the indicators and hazards are not on!!!

New indicator/hazard switch less than 6months ago, I have changed the relay for a different one, but, old relay is a "Klaxon 12V M10 72286 (12V 46-42-92W) " with 4 pins(3 outer and 1 in the middle) and the one I replaced it with is a 5 pin relay from my spares but now I have no dash warning lamp for the indicators???

Any ideas on this random anomaly, really didn't need this the night before the safety test but, what else should I expect from it now

  13. I think you are likely to buy it and try and keep it forever Richard, Petrol is the way forward, TD = good resale as almost everyone else is thinking the same as far as economy differences between the two fuel types, but it does also depend on your mileage!!!!

I think we are both going through the same thoughts at the same time, thinking about the same vehicles and the same fueling ideas.

I too have been thinking D3 L322 RRS, and yeah the scare stories are out there, but there are so any on the roads!!! I have seen 3 in the flesh that are now scrapped for nothing more than uneconomical to repair with electrical issues, but, and this is the "BUT", I only had this realization a few days ago, this is uneconomical based on LR servicing and labour charges, LR gen parts and diagnostics, the current owners are the wannabees and could afford to buy it and just about run it and beggar all, much like all those who bought RRCs and killed the engines through never changing the oil, those who bought Discoveries and did the sae and litterally ran them into the ground, so there is in my mind plenty of scope for these to be repaired at home. It just gets a bit more involving and more clean as you can identify the problems through the fault codes.

  14. I want the same for mine, same poundage but actually longer, there are tons of springs out there sold as lift springs but they are the same length/number of coils but at a higher poundage giving the impression of achieving a lift.

I was looking at a set of Terrafirma light duty 2" lift springs that should in effect give me the +1" I want after being squashed by the winch and bumper but be long enough to give the articulation I desire, just my own thought train, but you having chopped all the weight off the back it might be a little bit trickier and possibly see the need for custom springs????
