  1. I like soft off road as I drive gently and want an increased footprint, the Coopers are a super stiff carcass!!! But they're not too hard on the road either, again I found the Coopers rather stiff, the rears are same as the fronts unless I am going to load it up or tow.

  2. Whilst chatting with friends about tyres tonight we ended up at the old favourite "what pressure do you run yours at?".

    I run Cooper STT in 235/85 R16

    On road, 30psi

    Off road, 18-20psi

Got spme funny looks for that and then it sparked the hilarious debate about what is the optimum pressure for both on and off road without needing to adjust them constantly?

I think it's just laziness but settled for 25psi being inbetween my own pressure settings, what does anyone else think?

  3. Tracking adjustment is done by a tyre specialist, you could try the string thing but if you are unfamilliar with it then just go to the tyre center.

Which country are you in? I only know of Germany where the TUV is bi-annual?

An odd thing there, a 4ry old car on dissimilar tyres? unless you are familiar with the in's and out's of the truck then go to a well known and reputable specialist, failing that, put it in for a new safety test and see what they come back with.

Dare I say that I don't like the sounds of this problem, a 2010MY, parked up for a year, 18mnths since last safety inspection, dissimilar tyres on a still very new car.

  4. Will dig my CD out at lunch but there must be a problem with the instrument binnacle as you say the trailer warning flashes once as it should? This will take the same signal as the indicators but uses electrickery to work out the load and if you have a trailer coupled or not.

Have you tried a second hand instrument binnacle? I'd start there as it sounds as though the wiring is doing it's job.

  5. Proper winter tyres are great on ice, since experiencing a couple of spin outs on black ice in 2010 I have had winter tyres on the van from 1st November through to 1st March, not had the Disco road worthy for a winter yet but I have my eye on a set of proper winter tyres for the road and will swap between them and the Cooper STTs when we plan to go off road, just need to get the bloomin thing on the road first though :(

  6. I went the other way with the Disco, stayed solid and just paid a higher price for top quality discs and pads front and rear, after replacing the fluids and finally getting a solid pedal I found that after the initial "oh f@#k" from the lack of bite from the pads into the disc, I found that once bedded in they were fantastic and can lock all 4 wheels to a stop quite easily, although I try never to use the brakes as I find it such a waste to spend all that energy gettting up to speed, then to need to generate all that heat slowing down is counter productive.

  7. Well Richard, I will tell you how it all came to be.

I had numerous RRCs and Series vehicles through from late 90s to mid 2000s all easily kept on the road with a mix of gen and BP stuff, the BP stuff was actually really good back then, not just saying that either, it was similar quality at less than 1/2 the price.

Now almost 7 yrs on during this last 2yrs of my own rebuild and after having tried a few parts from BP believing they would have been the same as before but that people were expecting too much from the parts in hostile environments. Sad truth is, I found 90% of the parts that came from BP were simply not fit for use or purpose.

Seals had cracks in them, heater blower motor simply did not fit and even though it was described as direct replacement for a 200Tdi Disco it needed such modification that once I found it wouldn't fit or work as I needed it was too late to send it back, paper gaskets that were little more than brown coloured copy paper not even 1mm thick with randomly punched holes that barely lined up or were nowhere near, personal experiance of fitting a couple of switches on other peoples trucks and having them fail rather rapidly, 3 sets of brake discs with tidal proportions of run out, turned out as three with the subsequent 2 sets being the same and the last set was worse than the first 2!!! The supplier refunded and gave us a further refund on the receipt for a set of genuine ones from Land Rover they were so unhappy about the situation.

I know for sure that BP are the sole distributors for certain LR replacement parts as they bulk buy every unit made and even own some of the OEM companies, for instance, Adwest steering boxes unless sourced direct from Adwest, they will come in a BP box no matter who supplies it to you.

That's my story of how I have come to hold a rather jaded view of a company I once held in reasonable view for supplying decent aftermarket parts, turns out times have changed, there are some parts worth buying, but they seem to be few and far between. I do have a BP H/D clutch to fit in a while but only because it was better quality than 2 other clutches I looked at.

I do still hold the view that you get what you pay for, cheap is not better but expensive can often be a waste of money.

  8. Probably one of the main reasons I am well known in my local LR dealership, OK everything has to be ordered up and sent from Metz in France for a 200Tdi Disco, but it is a genuine part and although I might pay a heap extra, I pay once, fit and forget, not exactly true for some of the aftermarket pattern parts supplied is it?

  9. Less than £18 (45%) extra to go genuine part from LR, would rather pay that little bit extra for the peace of mind TBH.

Thomas fitted blue box brand on their L322 last year, he could have replaced all 4 with genuine by the time he'd faffed around with getting one that lasted more than a month on his car.

Just out of curiosity, you gonna replace them both or just the defective one?

  10. I have to go and look at a safety divices internal cage that is fitted in a Disco on Wednesday, will be looking at the mounting points and I had already mulled over box sills and new body mounts made in 2.5mm plate at the mountings.

I am not sure how reliable this quote will be but I had a chat with a company here in Holland who claim to be able to do me a full internal cage for my Disco for €950 fully fitted, it is a welded in cage so once fitted it has to be cut out unlike the SD cage that bolts in and could be removed relatively easily should I change vehicle in the future, I am yet to see how it is mounted, does it go direct to the chassis or do they strengthen the floor above the body mounts? I posed those questions but my Dutch is passable but not perfect and a trip to their works is planned next month to see some examples of their work.

  11. The live-ability issue of an external cage had not exactly entered my mind  good point though!

I want it to protect me and my investment, it is going to be in what will basically be my daily driver/off-roader/competition truck, this thing has to do everything, I don't want to run a second vehicle.

Gonna call a couple of custom cage builders first and see what numbers they come up with for roughly what Im looking for, if I can get them to price it in a moduar way I can price it against the off the shelf internal with any of the extra modules added.

  12. 70,000 aint much you know, checking all service history is priority in any vehicle purchase unless it is a "get me by" solution, ie, cheap and used. Find out as much as you can about the service requirements and milages appointed, once you know what and when then you will know what to look for in the history.

The FL2 is perfectly capable of towing a 2 horse trailer and the auto box will be your best friend in that department.

Best of luck finding the right car for you.

  13. The Safety Devices 6 point bolt in has 3 internal hoops and goes down the inside of the screen A pillar, I am thinking that it would need to do the same on the outside at the screen and first front hoop.

Bad feeling the extras I think I'd want will see this enter the realm of custom cage fabbing

I can't actually find anything on the net for an off the shelf full external cage for a Disco :(

  14. Had a good hunt around the net and I can't help but wonder which roll cage is better, internal or external?

It was inspired by the tales of HfH and the Mille De Rivieres, where a RRC was written off and had to get the big yellow taxi home.

I can't help but wonder which offers the best level of protection to my Discovery? And I don't just mean the ability to walk away from an otherwise serious roll, I mean more in terms of vehicle survival.

Any roll-over experts care to enlighten me?
