  1. Hi all. This is my first post on this site. I have a 1997 Discovery 1 with 300tdi motor. Can someone tell me what should the distance from centre of hub to the top of wheel arch be after a 2" lift ? Thanks in advance

For standard height if memory serves correct its around 760mm on the front and around 800mm on the rear from the arches to the ground depending on wheels and tyres fitted of course and then add 50mm so 810mm front and 850 on the back.

  2. Been there done that, you've seen my project Discovery 1 200Tdi and to be honest the wiring is actually quite easy, describe which circuits you are dealing with and I will do my best to help, the haynes manual was amazingly accurate too!!

  3. I wouldn't be too surprised if there was something else wrong with the engine as he doesn't seem impressed with it's towing ability either which I'd have thought wouldn't be the case with a TD5.

Maybe it's a clever ploy, everyone bidding on it thinks they are going to get a bargain and might get carried away with the bidding?

Will be interesting and amusing if the new owner turns up on this forum for help :)

Think you may well be onto something there!!!

I had a TD5 auto 5 seater for about a month when the D3 was being repaired(long story  )and was nothing less than impressed by it's ability to tow a 2000ltr diesel bowser!!

Like the way your mind works CW ;)

  4. I wish you the very best Jason, I still suffer with depression from time to time and find it especially hard at "certain" times of the year, but well done, I find comfort in my current project that takes me away from the gloom, life is precious and for all that you can live of it you will come through this.

Take care, and try to find peace within yourself and things will become right for you, everyday I am moments away from breaking down but with great support from friends and family I stay strong, I hope you do too buddy.

    All the best.

  5. You are right there Ralph, on my MOT certificate it descriptively says "This vehicle MUST use a warning triangle when loading and unloading from the rear as the rear lights are not clearly visible when the rear door is open", and my truck is a 1992 Discovery 1.

I would like to do the same as you though Davyd in fitting the old 300Tdi rear bumper with the lights in to get out of having to put the triangle out every time I open the back door!

  6. Just a quick update for anyone interested - FINALLY REASSEMBLING THE BLOODY THING, the light at the end of the tunnel is not a train after all!. Just waiting on the arrival of some multi pin connectors to replace the spuggies nest of chocolate blocks and scotch locks that make up the tow bar electrics.................

I never ever ever ever ever ever want to weld up another D1, not in this bloody lifetime, and to think that 6 months (and an awful lot of lost blood pain and bad language) ago I set out to change some f&%£ing leaky power steering seals.

Worry not Jeff, I am in the same situation, only I have left the steering box until last, but JBS has come up trumps with a best buy!!!

Really must update my build thread at some point......

Top work on finishing it though, post up some photos so we can see it running.

  7. OK, bolting a RR roof to your bodyshell is not "modified" because the shell is the same thing on RR/Disco, it's just different aluminium body panels. So you're bolting an unmodified RR roof to a standard RR/Disco body-shell.

The body is not structural as it has a separate chassis and is soft-mounted to it, unlike a normal monocoque car where the roof and even the windscreen are a big part of the rigidity.

One of the biggest problems FF is that the people who make the rules for the bigger rock of main land Europe have no interest in making things easier and all too often they have no idea of the impact of the rules they are making, I kind of see it this way, the rule makers have to justify their jobs and need to keep making new rules to keep themselves in work, so they sit around in a very metro sexual wine bar with a few other friends and then think up new ideas and just because after a bottle of pinot grigio the idea sounds good they jot it down on a napkin, get it drafted up by the legal team and hey presto another bonkers rule for the rest of us to follow.

I have some very strange boundaries to stay within in my county but getting even worse here unless you drive a brand new euro box and change it every three years, there is very little they will allow you to do to your own car to personalize it for your own needs/ desires/employments.

  8. I used to manage a waste transfer station, I was always told on one site that they had enormous problems with the Pikeys coming in and taking the copper, brass and wire, although once I had installed the remote CCTV on a Sunday afternoon I found it was actually one of the guys who was supposed to be the site foreman, was actually stripping the wire and putting it into the land fill bins and then anything heavy brass/brazing wise went into the back of his car, found it even more alarming at the rate he was putting 5 gallon cans of red diesel in the boot too!!!

So just be aware, some thieves live a lot closer to home than you might realize :o

But, your new measures are nothing new for me here, and the biggest hitter in it all is that the cash paid for demolition scrap has to be declared and there is no divvy up for the lads as you have to pay tax on it :angry2:

One way or another we are all gonna get screwed, just depends on by who?

  9. Diesel tank? if you are gonna try and make it factory appearance then the fact that it is missing from it's original spot might be noticed? I would try to stay within the law in your province as they are getting mighty ferocious in hitting folk with fines these days for any breaches of the rules, my mate just had his car refused a test cert and now has to remove the "A" bar that has been on there for years and the spots and wiring all because it was not listed on the papers as being fitted before 2007, oh and did I forget to mention the 500 euro fine he got for having them fitted without it being on the papers?

Just be careful if you are gonna play their game, they make up the rules!!!

  10. Sorry to bring this back to life but in looking over my 92' MY Disco the rear brakes are fed off the R/H front caliper line and the L/H has a whole channel all to itself, should this be right? I am looking for a brake line diagram but can't find one on the WWW.

  11. Instead of bobtailing it I could just remove the spare from tailgate and make bespoke front and rear bumpers. This way I will maintain seven seats while shortening the vehicle 12" overall.

Not sure exactly how you come to this 12" overall shortening as there is literally less than an inch between the rear bumper and the cross member, but I can certainly see something to be shaved off the front but not as much as you would be expecting and only just enough to give greater approach angles or you will be risking scraping the radiator grille if you get too adventurous off road.......

  12. Still bloody welding mine back together....

You and me both Jeff, wanna have a tenner on it who gets through the MOT first :hysterical::hysterical:

But I had a drive in an Evoque today, only way to describe it would be a Mini cross bred with the incredible hulk on steroids, admittedly it has just come out of a tuning shop for a pep up but very suitable if you got spare pocket money?

  13. Time to start marking every part on your vehicle with your Reg number

I just read that comment Zoltan and the first thing that popped into my head was having the Reg No. stamped into every panel as though it were some sort of embossing, and then obviously it would then take a good bit of work to get the panels back to normal flat shape and then painted, so potentially not worth the hassle and iff it were done in exactly the same place by as many folk as we could muster then it really would make life hard and traceable!!!!
