  1. I was unable to get normal mineral EP 85/90 for the front axle as I am about to begin the rebuild but I did manage to get some Kroon 75/90 which is a synthetic gear oil, now, I was always told the same spec or higher but never lower.

But is there a problem using a synthetic oil or should I not worry too much about it?

  2. Have seen this in one of the cars from Tornado Motorport...

...and I was guessing if this kind of arrangement could be used as an option instead of traditional portal axles.

They seem light and could be made 100% Rover with diffs, shafts, hubs, etc. from scrap/secondhand parts from L322 Rangies, Disco 3/4 or RRS.

Parts from a 500HP RR in a Tdi Disco 1 will certainly become bombproof.

I have to admit, I like it a lot!!!

looking at the photo, it's basically a diff from and independent suspension setup, welded into a frame to make a solid axle, using 4 cv joints? i can see it working well at the rear, but at the front the outer CV joint may restrict the amount of lock possible

True  But do they have an offering for the front at all? If so it would be nice to see it!!!

  3. That merc is a little bit more than special, wonder if it will be homologated for Europe?

Nice concept using front radius arms and panhards to achieve the suspension set up but the prop between center and rear axle looked way too flimsy for those tyres and 560lbs of torque!!!

Price tag? If you have to ask then you can't afford it type of thing I suppose :o

  4. aha, now mine has a longer plate on the inside and it comes through the hole beneath the body mount, not sure why? Oh well clears that up then, not losing the plot, just got more holes than I need in the plate and a slightly modified bumper mount, think I need to slow up on the booze, beginning to make me paranoid about the slightest little thing!!

  5. On my J-reg Disco it was M12 fine thread! And 12 point....gaa

Do yourself a favour, buy some spares from a UK supplier if necessary - LRseries will pop this kind of thing in jiffy bag if you ask for a postage quote.

When you get them, sacrifice one as a thread chaser bolt - run a 1mm angle grinder disc down the shaft twice (forming a cross with bolt viewed end on). Douse your bolt with WD-40 and wind slowly in. You'll be amazed at the crud you remove. This is half the battle - plenty of people (whether new or old bolts) just wind the bolts back in, having only removed the crud from the bit they took out! Then wonder why the bolts appear to be corroded in place!

Now that is a top tip!!!

Worthy of a virtual pint of your choice, cheers ;)

I have found a bottle of loctite but they do colors here, and it is blue or red and they only had blue not the red(243?) as I remember always using red in the past!

  6. Do you regularly round them off or something?

I don't believe they are stretch bolts...

No, only just began to attack them now I have spares and all my parts for the stub axle swapping, but I know how it goes with me unfortunately, I usually end up having to do the grinding off and sourcing new ones, it seems to be the way it goes, I always seem to be the guy who buys the neglected car feeling sorry for it then pay the price for others neglect which usually means trying to undo rusty bolts that have not seen a spanner in a good many years!!!

I am extremely paranoid about being stuck on a Sunday afternoon with only a broken bolt being between me and the open road and as they don't like imperial bolts or threads here it can be a wait for them to order them in too, even LR Belgium carry fu*k all stock of nuts bolts and washers!!!

  7. Don't mean to poke in on this but try using acetone on the sooty items, I did my intercooler with it and it cleaned it right out and where ther has been an exhaust leak at the manifold I wiped it over with the acetone a few times and all gone, be careful as acetone is bloomin flammable and if you do the intercooler it needs a good bit of airing before you refit it!!!

  8. I am about to remove my front bumper to start sizing up for making a H/D bumper to suffice until I can afford the winch and bumper that I want, but I was given some 5mm plates drilled supposedly for a D1 bumper mounting but I have only 3 bolts on my front bumper not 4 like there are in these plates, was there a point of change for the newer fixing arrangement?

And no I have not lost a bolt there really is only 3 holes!!

  9. HI I'm back after replacing the heder tank cap and topping up it just seems to 3/4 empty the header tank out of the overflow after a few miles and apart from a few drops onto the floor of coolent nothing changes, every few hundred miles i check and all is the same. 1/4 amount of coolent in the header tank.No overheating tempture completly normal.

    has anybody experianced this?

Please just confirm that for more than 100 miles the level never drops below 1/4?

Could be that it runs this way, I had a Komatsu digger that did the same, expansion tank was always lower than the minimum mark and if you topped it up it just spat it out, just the way it was and it went on for over 14,000 hrs of service like that too!! But as I do not know intimately the header tank of a D2, I cant say as I know whether or not it actually drains right out the bottom of the tank or if the pipe to the rad is higher than the bottom of the tank?

I would suspect a leak, but from where I don't know?

  10. buy both on sale or return

    You are kidding right!!!

UNF nuts and bolts here are more expensive than gold!!!

They are the double hex twelve point star bolts so I assume they would be M12?

I would do the download of microcat but have not the foggiest where it might be located?

  11. Ok so which one is it?

    15

    571 910

    caliper fixing, Bolt, '7 / 16 "', UNF 4

    price

    15

    FTC3375

    caliper fixing, Bolt, M12 x 35 4

    price

These are the two part numbers for the caliper fixing bolts on Disco 1 But I want to get new ones in stock before I try to remove the old ones and If they are UNF then I will have to oreder them in!!

So who can narrow it down on a 1992 Discovery1? UNF or M12?

  12. Saw this as an http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Hybrid-V8-Defender-Series-Range-Rover-UNFINISHED-PROJECT-/170993756365?_trksid=p2047675.m2109&_trkparms=aid%3D555001%26algo%3DPW.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D29%26meid%3D5895275859098588308%26pid%3D100010%26prg%3D1013%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D321080482722%26'>unfinished project and wonder HTF can you register a vehicle based on the tub? I thought that the chassis was the determining component?

But I must say, he must work super quick as "it don't need much just putting back together  " oh well another one to be wary of, shame though because it could be a nice truck if done properly!!

  13. How interesting, it's a bitza and nothing in particular either, really sh*t thing to build with good pound notes!!!

I am yet to be convinced by those pictures of it being an air portable lightweight Land Rover!!!

Especially like the quality touch with the shocks inside teh back springs, brings forth a taste of sophistication don't you think? £1000 and reserve not met and a missing log book too? Maybe he should have waited for the log book to come back before listing it?

  14. I congratulate the turn out and support you in your actions, when your donation page is set up I will be putting my hand in my pocket for it rest assured!

I agree entirely with you on the subject of the PDNP mismanaging the peaks, and with a good bit of research it could be proven as well, I have often thought on the subject of green lane closures within the UK and within these troubled economic times I feel it ridiculous to continue to push away revenue streams from those who actively enjoy green laning and seeing the countryside from the seat of their car, there are a great deal of closures from shops and pubs, rural filling stations and the likes that could be better sustained if they could actually see things from an everyday mans perspective, ok I am not saying that a group of three vehicles would spend enough to keep a village shop running, but if the lanes were re-opened and there was a lot more publicity in the public eye as to what is deemed as responsible green lane driving then there would be more traffic on the rural byways and then there would be more opportunities for money to be made from them and I think I can speak from experience here when I say that a group of drivers may be more likely to pop in to a village pub for a pit stop and spend a few quid than a couple of cars of walkers who more often than not come fully prepared with thermos and sarnies for their day and fill up at Tesco when they do the shopping due to convenience, where as a group of drivers who are using fuel throughout the day might well tank at a local filling station as they could be getting low?

I also note the potential revenues from advertising the byways of the PDNP, if there were thought given to future improvements then there could be organised activities and then B&Bs and restaurants could also benefit from drivers, yes I am all to aware that there are a lot of ramblers who venture there in the summer months to enjoy the stunning scenery but they are in essence seasonal holiday makers and are not so keen to ramble in the cold and wet of late autumn, winter and spring where as drivers are more likely to enjoy the challenge of the terrain in those months and also are not so deterred by the weather due to being inside a vehicle, there could be subscriptions to drive the lanes within the park and these could be displayed by a placard in the windscreen and signed at the beginning and end of lanes within the park.

I see a lot of missed opportunities and a public that is not so willing to go walking due to the pressures and commitments of life and although the same could be said for drivers, I feel that the fact that a lot more ground can be covered in a vehicle and a lot more sights can be seen, and this is the reality, people want to see the scenery and the sights but they often do not have the time, and for some the ability to walk for several miles to see the views from just one site and would like to see more but by driving they can see more of the scenes and enjoy the park for the beauty that it beholds.

Sorry to ramble, no pun intended but I needed to get that off my chest!

  15. The linky isn't working, this seems to be the one you mean http://www.lro.com/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=86988

well done, seem to be losing my ability to copy and paste LOL.

Although I am not in the UK I really am concerned about the targeted thefts of Land Rovers, I know both of those areas very well as I worked for many years in and around Walton on Thames, Sunbury, Addlestone, Croydon and Mitcham, from experience I know the pikey's are rife in those areas and I had to employ a night guard for my waste transfer station in Mitcham to stop them coming in and stealing the copper/brass and wire, another skip operator close to me could not justify the cost of a guard and regularly lost his tot and often had damage done to his vehicles and machines at the same time!!

I hope they find it for you!!!

And as far as CCTV goes it is a good deterrent but it won't stop those who are more than opportunists, GPS trackers are the best way forward and something I have now come across called Alpha dot marking system, Defenders are stolen for parts normally and at least this system if used prolifically will become a standard thing to check the identity of the parts offered for sale on some internet auction sites and even at the S/H part fares!
