Not really as they are happy to sell me a box as an individual, but won't be until tomorrow until I know what actual cost will be as I forgot the time and it was late when I called, but I am covering all my options here and planning for worst case that they could be more expensive supplying an individual box to a private customer as opposed a bulk purchase of say 10 units to a retailer!!
Will post up when I know more tomorrow......
was playing stub axle swapping tonight and oh boy is my tolerance for rusty nuts and bolts wearing thin,..... Lets hope good or at least better news tomorrow.....
-
There's a guy in France offering new Adwest lhd boxes at €501 delivered (to France)... can't seem to find 'em any cheaper than that. How far are you from the border....?
North of the border, I'm in the Limburg district, probably more than 150kms from the border
Will stump up the 588 and be done with it, only a week to wait for the readies and then I have a guarantee to back it up with I suppose......
Non gen recon box here is 387 euro outright purchase....... Have contemplated one of them and a seal kit for 47 and see where I end up
-
Bought one direct a few weeks back.....
Funnily it was my alternative supplier that told me they were not supplying direct anymore and the lack of details I can see on their web site seems to support that too, so perhaps I should call them tomorrow and see for myself?
-
Adwest seem to have stopped selling them direct unfortunately. It came up on another forum the other day and the parts seem to have disappeared from their website. Is be happy to be proven wrong on this though!
correct
My usual source told me there was a marked increase from the 1st of March hence the steering box being now 650 and not the originally quoted 475 euro!!!
He came up with a LR reconditioned box for about 430 but still no warranty to be had!! I really am being very OTT with using new parts and making sure of warranties but when I change my circumstances I will be cash strapped for a little while and this thing has to have everything with as much warranty against failure as I can find!
-
TBH want to steer clear of recon/remanufactured boxes as I have heard nothing but problems to be had and no warranty to claim against is not what I have planned but getting to the end of my tether with the costs of this rebuild
For what I am spending on this thing here I could have created a sheer masterpiece back home!!!
I am still pondering the costs of the seal kit at 47 euro as to whether or not it is worth a punt?
Or wait another couple of weeks until I have enough money for the new box? Got them down to 588 euro from 650 so better but still a lot!!!
-
Can anyone verify a steep rise in the price of power steering boxes?
I have checked the web and it seems from most sites there has been no change but I was told today that the new price plus 175 euro from original quote a couple of months back at 650 euro all in
So what does anyone else know of?
Or am I being taken for a ride again

Just grabbed this off http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSA_EW/DW_engine#DW12'>wiki for you, look down to the DW12 engine for a list of vehicles it was packaged into, a lot!!!
Might still be more cost effective to take an engine from a broken vehicle and transplanting your needed items over?

I think the Defender FB is different to the Disco one but I had a right load of aggro and did as suggested I made a tool from the top of an easy open bean can as my small screw drivers didn't work either
I did scavenge the old FB from the 300Tdi Disco but it seems different still with the 200Tdi one!
-
I also remembered something from a mag article in LRW years ago about http://www.noisekiller.co.uk/acoustic_blankets_products.asp'>acoustic blankets and they fitted an engine blanket and a bell housing blanket for sure but I also think there was a transmission blanket too, one that was wrapped around it? I could be wrong about that and mistaking it for the large bell housing blanket though.
For Defender, worth looking at I suppose? But I think for the Disco, the Dynamat and the original sound proofing and insulation may well be enough without adding too much weight to the vehicle already?
-
Just a few minutes of google and I found http://www.soundservice.co.uk/soundabsorber_industrial_applications.html'>this Looks like they do a whole range of foams that could suit almost any application?
Will be contacting them to see what they can do for me.....
-
I have bought Dynamat for my Discovery, looking to do the bonnet and the bulkhead, transmission tunnel and foot wells, I am considering doing the rear foot well and the rear wheel arches too, in just a bid to try and dampen down the noises.
I did consider the builders bitumen, but the Dynamat has come at a very keen price and it has been very highly recommended!!!

I can sort of see the point in the bent pipes or doors if they were 99p start, someone might be able to use the pipe end fittings, or use the door frames as repair sections to repair an existing set.
But the asking prices listed were just bonkers!
I can sort of understand your points there especially for the pipe fittings, but come on, these are the types of things you share with your mates on a forum or when you have a spanner weekend, not published on ebay surely? Or am I losing touch with reality?
-
It's like these doors:
Who's going to buy a set of bent doors? They did start at £100, but it looks like someone has bought them now.
Steve
Just clicked the linky and it shows them at £50!! What on earth are some people thinking? I would be embarrassed at putting something like that for sale and even on Ebay!!! I shudder to think what type of people are dumb enough to advertise let alone buy squashed oil pipes and bent doors, ridiculous!!!!
-
As above really, had a rubbish day today as my weekend staff did not show up and I had to do the boring and mundane chores myself, and was pondering this as I know that LR refitted CDL to the D2 as TC alone was not enough, but I also know that a lot of Freebies have been getting around very easily in the slippery snow and ice with their TC system.
But is there any comparison between a TC equipped vehicle and a truck with 3 diff locks?
So what does every one else think?

Somebody got creative
Or drunk

I think I will give the Koni a shot, I am not planning to use them for any challenge competition type stuff, but I am planning to do a few RTV type trials and driving days with the club, they are still more expensive than the OME and OEM shocks too!!!
Thanks for your replies fellas

I have been heavily looking into the warranty side of shocks recently as I refuse to be bent over backwards and shafted for good quality shocks with a very good warranty only to be doubly bent over and quite literally shafted when they impose their conditions of use within the warranty!!
Old Man Emu- 3yr warranty- excludes off road use
Koni- life time warranty- excludes off road use
Bilstein- 3yr warranty- excludes off road use
So what am I missing here?
All of the above are supposedly marketed as 4x4 off road shocks, but they have implied a warranty clause whereby the warranty is void if used off road
Can anybody advise on the warranty applied to Fox shox???
I am not shy of spending money but I refuse to pay more on the basis that the warranty stands for something when in reality it is as useless as the paper used for the invoice.
I know Vulcan Bomber uses Koni heavy tracks and swears by them, hence my reasoning for looking into them, but at the rate the warranties keep hitting stumbling blocks I may as well fit Brit Part cheapies and be happier knowing they are 1/4 the price and that the warranty side of things doesn't matter as unit cost for life span they would work out the same!
What shocks with proper warranty can others recommend?

Don't ask what goes on in my head but I just had a vision of a diff housing with two swivels and housings forming some sort of random independent type suspension complete with coilovers. I will now go and have a long lay down in a dark room!!!

I like the "6x6".... But actually 6x4
This, alternatively, has little or no chequer plate, and doesn't look too bad... Until you open the doors! Then the violent orange of those seats clashes with the bile-green of my vomit.
The thing I don't get with that one is the fact that they kept it a CCPU? WHY? might have been more use as a HT?
Love the neat cable installations?

Lack of a tow bar = bloody good look to see if it was removed for any reason?
But if never fitted then excellent as it means it will have only ever been loaded up and driven and often those that never had one lead a very cushy life for a good many years as the lack of tow hook will have put most folk off!!!
Buy it now before someone else does!!!
-
i'm not sure if i see it as an advantage or not... i do like the useful storage pockets in 5 door models, but then, i hate those crappy plasticy storage pockets in 5 door models!!!
dunno what the insurance implications of 2 extra seats is? higher premium, i guess...
Not necessarily, depends on who you insure with?,.
I insured my 7 seat 3 door and asked the question if it was any cheaper if I removed the flip up seats and had the log book altered to just 5 and they said it makes no difference, it is based on the group and any accessories fitted....

V8 or Tdi?
if a V8 then yep
If a Tdi then what else is wrong with it?
-
I mailed Si a couple of months back and they are available, better to email or to call!!
just be sure which size you need as there are two available, I actually want two but can't seem to be able to talk my boss into paying for them

Yep Rover diff Bill, for the Discovery of 1992 vintage, I was sitting there thinking about it getting paranoid as I am a little bit of a worry wart when it comes to things like this as it was mineral before and I am not 100% on the suitability of synthetics in older components that used traditional oils.
I have experience of severely accelerating the wear of an old 2.25 diesel by using a high detergent long life diesel engine oil, as it basically stripped all the carbon from the engines surfaces and ended up grinding out what was left of the wearing surfaces with the carbon getting stuck in the oil ways, since then, I always ask folk who know more!!!
Some mistakes are not worth making!!
200tdi and no radiator shroud?

Strange as this may sound there is a good reason to keep the viscous fan as it ensures air movement under the bonnet and also keeps air moving through the intercooler, by not having either the fan shroud or the viscous you will hinder the effects of the intercooler as it will not have enough through put to exchange the heat build up, if you fitted a leccy one it would need a controler based on a thermo couple to effect charge temps if that makes sense?
