  1. OMG, I have never in my life seen a chassis so bad, I just scrapped a 1998 D1 chassis that was perfect, and with papers, it had slight surface rust but what you show us in those pics is horrendous rust and for a car that is not really that old!!!

Good luck with the rebuild, hope you have an understanding bank manager

  2. This would not be my daily driver, the Disco is only a toy really and is not used all the time. I have a Picasso as my daily driver and my Wife has an old MX5 which I am in the process of getting MOT'd, so a little soft top sports car for next summer is already covered. I also have a motorbike.

I don't know what's going on. Should I get a ponytail and a mistress instead?

Mistress yes, ponytail would be acceptable but a Mullet is a big no no!!

It is ok, I too am thinking I might be better off with something boringly reliable and more efficient and I am yet to turn a wheel on tarmac with my Disco :o

A Freelander 2 is very nice!! Defenders have an elbow walloping annoyance for me which will only be overcome by a wheelbase in excess of 127" :moglite:

  3. I´m working in a full mechanical (no hydro/air) suspension idea that will enable 300mm (12") of riding height variation. The idea is to use -15cm setup with 205/65R16 van tyres for city/road, standard height for dry/light off roading along with 205R16 and +15cm for hard offroading, using 9.00R16s.

Photoshopped Discovery with standard size tyres and -15cm setting.

As I am trying to get through the monumental red tape of my particular EU county that has the same hard line as yours and similarly does allow modifications as by means of an SVA type thing and I am almost 100% sure you could get approval on air suspension on a Disco 1 without the need to destruction test it!!

Now if your build could be built based on a model from an SVA(Portuguese equivalent?) What could your engineer recommend to get the bobtailing through? I think I am right in saying that body shell and chassis modifications may require a crash test, but it could depend on your local regs more than anything?

Personally I think by using as much original type equipment you stand the greatest chance to get through the scrutineering process, although you would not be able to use a complete front axle from a P38 the front mounts for the air bags and shocks would be genuine parts and the rear axle is not so different and could easily be adapted to air, this I think would be your easiest route, too heavily modified and you won't get road going approval without crash testing, which means you will be risking your only car on the modifications you make, keep it simple and you stand a chance!!

Without a doubt the chassis with the upside down "U" in it for the axle to go up into would deffo need crash test!! Not worth the risk of the complete car as once modded in that way and request approval it then may not be allowed to be reversed as it (in their eyes) will have significantly reduced structural integrity!

Have you access to any other scrap motors to see how far you could go before needing crash testing in your province?

  4. I think O Teunico's posts can be quite inspirational, in fact at least one member has been inspired enough to seriously contemplate building a 6x6 Landrover based on some of the accumulated data/experience from O.T's introductory thread.

I can understand why he won't commence any build at this stage, what with being unemployed in a country experiencing a serious economic crisis, in addition to having highly restrictive vehicle modification regulations.

If I had his photoshop skills i would probably build vapour projects all day.

O.T, how about you form a lobby group with some of your local residents to pressure your local council to lower the road under that stupid bridge? Then you can just fix the engine in your Disco and just concentrate on improving its offroad credentials.

In case no one has noticed, this 'International' forum and the 'modified vehicle' forum has been fairly static for the past few weeks, so it does no harm to throw a few different ideas out there.

Same across all the forums I think Bill, trouble is there are just too many out there and with so many of the problems we have with our vehicle already being so well documented on various forums and especially on this particular forum, a few minutes of google searching can yield all the answers you need, unless you are into something really heavy such as the extreme modding and comp side of things there tends to be little new to be discussed.......

  5. On my never ending list of things I want is actually something a little bit odd......

I don't want to have full central locking but I would like to be able to unlock the rear door of my Discovery 1 remotely if at all possible?

It never was fitted with central locking so it would have to be some sort of kit but I really only want it on the boot.

Silly I know but all answers appreciated as I know nothing of this little subject.

  6. I was thinking about Land Rovers in gereral... Who needs them. I reckon i could be quite competitive at winch challenge in a standard Fiesta with the appropriate winches bolted on here and there.

I am beginning to think I should have bought a Peugeot Partner van and never bothered with my project car, could have bought a fairly recent one with lots of toys and probably had a decent holiday with what I have shelled out so far.....

I hope he does build something and shares his creation with us, would be good to see but at this rate it might be a year or three before we get past the idea stage :hysterical:

  7. It's "that" question again, you should PM dirty diesel about the ISUZU 4BDT1 engine, 3.9 TDI that is very similar dimensions to a 300Tdi but a bucket more power, oh how I wish I could but in my county they don't allow such things

  8. In some countries they cut of the hand which you used trying to steal the item....

    Daan

That would both if he had the door in both hands

I like the remote dead bolts into hinge and latch sides but also wonder if there was room enough to get one on the door top?

As for the smashing of glass, easy cured, there are such things as vinyl films which can be applied inside the window, try smashing your way through a gary boys tinted rear window just to see how right I am

Liking the vigilante picnic idea ;)

  9. TPFT isn't always cheaper than fully comp - incredible but true.

    Very true!!!

    Ford Fiesta 1998 MY 1.8D fully comp £245 TPFT £315 :o

I just got the shock of my life today after being quoted 1125 euro for a 1992 Disco1 and I am 35 FFS need to shop around a bit more but they better get busy reorganising the decimal points or UK insurance on VIN and a green card for this one :rtfm:

  10. I still think an electric fence energizer powered from the batteries that is only disarmed by a separate fob is an effective solution, and yes as long as there are sufficient signs around the property it is perfectly legal ;) .

But I am a Discovery owner and our parts are not so in demand nor quite so easy to steal, but it does still worry me due to the value of engines and gearboxes over here, I alerted authorities to a RHD 90 CSW for sale less it's engine and gearboxes, another one stolen from the UK raped and dim wits tried to sell the rest on for more money, but like you Si, I had another issue with a TD5 130 that I considered buying as it was basically stripped out but had all parts less engine and gearboxes and front end due to it being accident damaged, and like your truck it was a total loss and was supposed to be destroyed, imagine how surprised that guy was when the police showed up along with criminal investigations crew to start pulling his life apart, gonna be a long court case but I am looking forward to seeing the end result as the punishments here are a lot more harsh than the UK for being involved in ringing and associated activities!!!

Apart from locking it up in a garage there are limited options that does not make life harder on yourself when you are the one who actually wants to work on your own truck.

  11. Great for heightening the rear if carrying heavy loads and without cost of new H/D springs, some folk have done them on all corners and achieved an adequate lift by doing so, for some it is the cheapest way to get a lift without the massive costs of new springs and shocks, although the shocks are the limiting factor with regards to articulation and some would say there is a loss of downward without longer shocks but depends on what you want from your truck?

I would fit them without a worry on mine but almost everything is dependent of costs, spacers all round and longer shocks is a lot cheaper than springs and shocks, but spacers alone would be adequate for some who are gentle users but need extra height to clear taller tyres.

Very mixed needs and nothing quite fits but they are plenty good enough just depends on what you want them for?

  12. Perfect gents, Yeah you're right Ralph, the gasket set was for a TD 2.5, managed to find it's way in to my search results, better buy me a few new tubes and find as many and more of the gaskets and seals to try and stop this thing leaking more oil than it drinks diesel.

  13. I had a K reg 200tdi disco the flanges were thin and the shafts were definitely 10 spline, flange thickness is a guide but not gospel.

This is a common thing with Land Rover in general, when the part bin runs empty use a choice of "A" "B" or "C" to continue production :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:

  14. What is the purpose of the ladder frame above the sump an a 200Tdi and where can I get a new sump and lader frame gasket from?

Bit leaky under there but I can find a sump gasket but not the one for the ladder frame thing, is there a gasket or just RTV?

Lost myHaynes and feel a little bit screwed without it!!! Mechanics bible!!!

  15. My Rusty is from 1992 and has the chrome balls, my V8 that has supplied me with all of the hardware for converting to 24 spline, but just popped in my head earlier today to actually ask.

Is there a difference in the swivel housings or balls that would stop me using the teflon coated balls from the 1998 axles on the 1992 axles?

I ask for a definitive answer as it rifts in my head as no and something about bearings and Railko bushes, anyone know?

  16. I have taken off the old 10 spline stubs as swapped to 24, now, like a div I didn't put any threadlock on the stub axle bolts so they will be coming off again and done properly, but when I took the 10 spline hubs off the bearings were oil lubricated, now the 24 spline gear is off a 1998 Disco1 and it is all greased up in there and although there was a relatively small quantity of liquid type gunk dribbling out of the hubs when I pulled the stubs off it was more like oneshot only thicker.

But the question is, with the silly rubber dust covers is it possible to remove the oil seal and allow the swivel oil lubricate the wheel bearings and the half shaft without it going everywhere?

Just I like the oil lubrication of the half shafts within the drive flange as it looks to be a wear problem in the making with my luck these days.

So what does everyone else think?

  17. If lift springs are a legality issue then new factory HD springs would work fine, unless you want the extra height to aid break over, approach and departure angles...

Now this is why I initially wanted the lift as the Discovery has a fair over hang to be honest and approach angles aren't too great either, lifting would not solve these but it would improve them a little, I have so much to do on it to get it road legal at the moment but finding a way to reduce front and rear excessive over hangs with a little bending of the rules but without actually breaking them, but that's for another thread another time.

Without a doubt I will be fitting extended bump stops to stop them slamming the arches but an issue brought forth with those fitted without the lift is the fact that I have then limmited the articulation of the axles!!!

Oh dear, head scratching time yet again.....

  18. I was surprised that the left hand hub a full three drops of oil came out when drained, it was black and stank worse than normal!!! But for how ever long it was running like that none of the components have suffered greatly, bitof wear in the half shaft splines but nothing worse than the original 317,000Kms would indicate!

Will fill her up with oil and spin the wheels a few turns :)
