  1. About to put the front axle back together after a couple of weeks being in bits whilst work takes over, but got time now I hope without interruption, but what should I do with the CV joints? My swivels are EP90 filled and will continue to be, but should I fill the CVs with grease before fitting it all together again or just pour a little EP over, assemble and job done?

Am only curious as to what others believe best practice?

  2. its a work horse ffs, its not brand new...

mot was 6 moths ago.. plenty of time for rot to appear.

well it obviously is to someone.. the wheels and tires are worth over £500 alone. it also has a personalized number plate... and not to mention is comes with a brand new door. and who would pay that sort of money for a good solid land rover? almost sounds like a bargain to me. im not sure why you would spend upto £1000 on tarting up a work horse?.

Something I learned a long time ago with S/H cars, the asking price is only the deposit, from what I can see of it, and from what I know about pulling them apart to fix the things I can see, it ends up costing a lot more than you first realized, yes it is a work horse but I would not be happy to sit in seats like that and stare at a dash like that either!!

So replacing them would be first job and then what happens when you pull it all apart, you find even more sh*t, just looking at it says go away I have been fully abused and poorly maintained, good luck to who ever buys it, see your point for wheels and tyres but they are what folk like me call consumables, I spent 800 on my tyres, but they are still just consumables, more interesting to break it and sell it in bits and double the money I suppose?

  3. Oh I remember taking my Isuzu Trooper for the DOE in Macroom, thank the gods it was the testing station staffs good mood day!!! Got an advisory for the headlight alignment being slightly out, they missed the rusty brake lines that burst on the way back to Bandon!!

Although to be honest, for some things here it is best to fit bigger tyres and such like before it's spec is logged in the computer, they do check!!

  4. A ha, this is where it gets tricky, my car is commercial and therefore I am only restricted on the load and speed ratings but not the diameters, passenger carrying cars are subject to no more than 1.5% increase or decrease in diameter as per original fitments.

Lifting is a problem as it alters the cars characteristics and stability when driven on road, and they do not like that at all, somethings they will not notice or pay much attention to, my friend has a problem now as he has an "A" bar fitted and has done for years but a new recruit spotted it wasn't on the MOT cert as having one fitted and he has to remove it along with the array of lighting that lives on it, before he can go back and get it re-tested.

Welcome to my world of randomness when it comes to Land Rovers in Belgium!! It is pot luck on the day as to whether they notice anything or even check, but if they do it is better to have all bases covered than having a taxi home and then spending out on new parts just to satisfy the MOT man!!!

  5. The Land Rover Deep dish alloys are a lesser offset than the compomotives that came off it, even with just 235s on they stuck out past the arches a little bit!! now these sit under the arches but do have a greater offset than the Disco steels.

The problem for me is in the fact that the OME +2" springs are technically illegal here as they are not standard, but come in black so just about acceptable for fitting, cost wise they are the same as genuine parts but when I saw the Disco with the new gen parts springs compared with the old one it was astounding!!! Just throws in a little more confusion, I know I have already got to fit taller bump stops to stop the tyres slamming the inner arches but it is the spring quandry that gets me as I would rather prove a receipt for gen parts than OME+2", and yes Hitler does live on in my bit of Europe, my mate just had a thorough testing and even had the vernier treatment with his 130s springs as they thought it was lifted!!!

To do, to do, I am such a worry wart at times but never used to second guess myself so much!!

  6. well the springs that are on it are shot and need replacing as sagging badly now so suppose better buy the H/D springs and shiney new shocks then, I thought that was all that the camels had done but couldn't find reference to be certain and also why I posted here to ask the more knowing than I....

  7. No me, I was pointing out there is a third engine mounted. I can't say I would know what an MPi lump looks like but I know for certain that a Td5 looks nothing like that with the engine cover removed Ralph!

Once upon a timeI was dupped into believing this smaller modern engine thing when MPI Discos were around and I actually thought the idea was cool, only to then find out what that the only small modern engine was no less than 3.5 liters with 8 cylinders and powered by spark plugs, then I found out how empty my wallet became and thought diesel was the way forward, the 2.0 was actually a good engine, just not in a 2T Disco :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:

  8. Ok, so I had it in my head a 2" lift would be a good thing to have on my Disco, but today I was over at a neighbors farm where they have just fitted standard height Genuine H/D springs on their 1995 300Tdi, now when sitting next to their aging badly 1991 200Tdi it really did sit a lot taller in comparison!!

Is this something worth a second thought or should I still punt on the OME lift springs for my Disco?

  9. How rubbish!!!!

We have a rolling 25yr Oldtmer thing here, but there are exemptions for use of vehicles classed as old timers!!! No business use, no commuting, no school runs and such like, but there is the nice thing, like only having to have a safety test every 3 yrs! Only another 4yrs for my Discovery1 then!!

But what does it open the door to exactly? erm, nothing good just a few series 3s and a few other RRCs....

  10. The thin flange and floating front shaft does not guarantee a 24 spline diff in an axle. I bought a pair of what were supposedly 300Tdi disco axles, the rear had been used in a 90 for a short while so the 4 bolt flange in place of the rotaflex 3 bolt was expected. I found out when i pulled a rear shaft that it was 10 spline. Also there were no anti roll bar mountings. Checking the serial numbers in the parts book showed that they were late 200tdi disco, the change to 24 spline shafts/diffs according to the parts book corresponds with the start of 300Tdi production. The late 200 CV joints are supposed to be stronger than the 300 CV joints.

But quite a few late 200 owners claim they have 24 spline diffs or is it that they have 24 spline at the front flanges and assume the rest is also.

We pulled the rear shafts and diff as I was replacing the rotten diff pan and it was deffo 24 spline ;)

Is it as simple as swapping diffs and shafts? I was lead to believe that there was a need to replace the stub axles and hubs also especially in the front?

  11. This is sounding all too familiar regards air suspension, change this that and the other and owner ends up with an enormous bill and sells it a very unhappy bunny!!!

Has the compressors air intake been compromised at all? It can be as simple as a partially blocked filter/intake, a slight kink in a pipe, they really need a specialist to sort them properly, I had a bundle of problems on a P38, not mine but my mate was out of cash after the garage replaced heaps of components without solving the problem!! His was a perished air bag but they replaced almost every electrical component and never checked the air bags first!!!

Probably does not help but it is worth having a good look for yourself first, parts are not cheap and neither is the labor charges that go into fitting them!!

  12. Nearly all 300Tdi were 24 spline, my mate has a 200Tdi and that has 24 spline!!

Easy way to check without pulling it apart is to look at the drive flanges, the thick flanges are 10 spline and the thinner are 24, if it the front axle the 24 spline has a semi floating half shaft in the drive member and there is a rubber boot over the circlip and shims, just ask him to send you a picture and post it up for us and it can easily be identified, on a point worth noting, 10 spline drive flanges are not compatible with all types of alloy wheels due to the width of the flange!! Guess how I know

  13. I drove a 6X4 Volvo A25 and an 861 for a while, good enough most of the time but not so good in dry soft sand and sticky wet clay but apart from that you wouldn't know the difference, the drop box became necessary for them after the demand for 6X6 articulated haulers really took off, and Volvo knew that off road conditions were just far too aggressive for through drive center axles and also yes there was an enormous cost implication too as the system of using the drop box allowed uniform and standard components like axle casings and crown wheels and pinion gears, also it eliminated the engineering costs of producing the dedicated through drive axle, something which would see a rise in component costs for that axle but also meaning different tooling for the manufacturing, also the drop box was retro fitted to a great many haulers that were 6X4 when built new and only needing a center axle from a dismantled hauler, it is good to know that through the years they got the gearing right as it never changed from the first of the 5350 range right up to today's haulers and only changes slightly by the range capacities ie, A25, A30, A35, A40 etc.

Sorry, bit of a geeky subject for me LOL

  14. Any loss in power that may result from the lack of air flow through the intercooler is more than made up for by not having to permanently drive the cooling fan.

I removed mine from my TD5 and installed an electric one and it was the best improvement I made to it. The engine was noticeably more responsive and the MPG went from 28 to 32.

very significant increase!!! what other enhancements have you made to your truck, I can't believe the viscous fan alone would affect MPG to that extent!!

  15. they quote the price of that drop box at £5000!!! It is air operated also meaning that the vehicle it is fitted to is part time 6X6, it does look very familiar though as Volvo use such a type of box transferring drive to the rear axle of their 6X6 dump trucks rather than through drive type axles where enormous strain can be put on the center axles crown wheel and with payloads in excess of 50T they prefer to take the drive up and over the center axle to drive the rear, so when the going gets tough you pop her in 6X6 and away she goes!
