  1. I built one, but did not like it. The main problem is spooling out; its too difficult for the co driver if he cant see the drum, let alone if the drag of the system is too high. mine went forward through the car and you could take a loop out of the drum to go double when winching backwards. The Ibex system has soo much drag on it that your winch power is drastically reduced. Also, if you are knee deep in the mud and your cable breaks, good luck...

In the end, I decided to pay the weight penalty and use 2 winches, like most people.

  2. If you really want a defender these days you may as well just buy one rather than hack up a serviceable series  also they're common as muck

Quite, and I would rather prefer to go the other way round since a flat front looks pretty hidous. Why would you want to destroy the most iconic landy shape?

  3. Daan If you intend to or feel you might need to put your vehicle through the test then having the manual is a bit like having a copy of the highway code prior to taking the driving test,............... advisable!

True, thats why I am trying to get one! I suppose the 2004 version is a start.

  4. As far as guidelines are concerned the best thing to do is get an SVA build manual, from DVLA/ VOSA, cant link it at the moment due to work computer. That tells you the legal requirements.

Has anyone here got a checklist? You can buy the complete bible/manual for £50 I think, but I am not keen on this (a true dutchman....) and reading the whole thing.

  5. Daan - I think yours is the nicest solution I've seen to the waffle problem although its not exactly a quick fix!

Thanks for the comment will. But my point is that if you go on a side slope, the 20kg right up in the air might mean the difference between continuing or become the next you tube disaster video.

  6. Yep,

And a waste being a deep fat fryer that will leak the devils fluid everywhere :P

But seriously spot on, cleaning things takes ages, but makes a HUGE diiference to the quality of the rebuild / repair,

Nice touch to see Les has even colour coded the block and sump to match the leaks

    Oh my coat

Any chance of a small Cod n chips before I g.......... . Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek

  7. I have had it glow faintly on my old peugeot for a while. I did fix it by replacing the brushes. When they wear out they just touch the commutator lightly, causing a bad connection which was the problem. It took an age to get the brushes though, because nobody wasts time anymore taking alternators apart to save a few pounds. I was obviously in financial disaster zone at the time...

Do the bearings at the same time and your alternator is mint for years again

  8. Or imagine VW spending 20mil for nothing. They wont be doing that in a hurry again.

I am a bit puzzled with their fears for safety. every year at least on or two competitors get killed and worse, some local children are run over. they seem to shrug their shoulders over that but they are really the victims.

I would imagine many of the entrants spend many months of each year and tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars preparing for the Dakar, and to be told the event is cancelled when they are virtually on the start line must be heart breaking as well as financially ruining for the smaller outfits.

    Bill.

    Oh, Bloody Al Quaeda

  9. I would hope that anyone new to the scene may read a few more of the posts to Daan.

then again you could look at other L/R forums where sod all is typed about L/Rs just loads of guff about nothing.

lack of spammers/independence from Magazine input.

And still waiting on the facts of the said broken Anchor.

Point taken, but were having a picture of a broken anchor, followed by 2 pages of people shouting at each other, but nobody really knows what happened.

    Daan

  10. Peter hasn't said as yet how he broke it though has he?

O look, some one else is asking for facts!

I just googled lr4x4 and this is the result: LR4x4 is a friendly independent Land Rover enthusiasts forum. Get help, share ideas find out what others are doing with their trucks.

If I were a stranger, new to the scene and I would be reading the groundanchor thread, i would be pi**ing myself laughing.

  11. The main problem here imho is that the bellhouse doesnt have a breather: it is pretty piping hot in there while driving offroad, and if you than go bonnet deep in water, the whole thing cools down and a massive suction will occur, trying to get water in as well as oil from gearbox and engine.

I made a breather pipe similar to the axles, gearboxes and timing cover.

The last time I looked in there it was dry-ish as it originally was, so it seems to work pretty well.

  12. I have a sankey trailer for sale if you are interested. It is located in surrey. I used it little but a friend has taken it to Le Mans twice. It is in very good condition. In my opinion it is a no brainer, it is cheap, you can use the spare wheel of your landrover and they are built so tough, perfect for use offroad.

  13. an absolutely perfect description- basically the vapour builders "eyes" are bigger then their "tummy"

at some point (which i reached around 6 months ago) you have to say enough is enough, this is what i'm doing, i'm not taking on any new ideas and i'm going to compromise certain areas in order to get it finished.

I got to that point as well. but by thw time I got it running it was old news and I started improve my own build. So here we are 5 years after completion and the grinder and welder are still running flatout.

  14. Yes, I do. They usually look at your car and think its only so-so; but they are usually building something in their own garage that will put everything else to shame, something this world is just not ready for. Thats then probably why it will stay in the garage forever.

I am aware of the restrictions on time, money, unforeseen circumstances, but also on restrictions getting bored with it, cant be asked and put it on ebay for pennies.

You know that many vapour builders to be able to to make that statement then Daan?

I would imagine financial restrictions, time available, unforseen circumstances play a bigger part in it myself.

Oh - and making a pigs ear of it occasionally too!

    Les.

  15. Yes Les, it is apparently true................ i think there is a little more to it than meets the eye ;) ..................... it was also reported (just a small piece) in this months LRO...................... very rare for me to get that mag, but I was bored on the train..........

    :)

Any more information about this story? Such a measure would sound right to some drunk driving a car without insurance, no driving license and MOT. Not for a perfectly good car that has a few unimportant mods.

If your insurer is aware of the mods, how can it be classified as uninsured. Mot secures roadworthy so in my eyes that story is not complete.
