  1. been off the road for a year or more because no one would give him the bits for free to finish it.

I found that a problem as well. Thats the best excuse I've heard in ages for not getting on with a job. In fact I am tempted to use this excuse myself!

  2. We're hoping to drive up on the Thursday and have Friday sat by the river feeding the midges.......

getting excited slowly. Still no trailer yet! Cya all there

    Mark

Roughly my plan, but I know its going to be late friday for some reasen..

    What trailer?

    C you, Daan

  3. I am going for a serious reply: We were looking at a malaysian RFC entrant which had 2 lights underneath his car. We were joking about this, but later found out what they were for: if you ever tried crossing a logbridge at night, pitchdark you will relize these lights are your best friend!

I doubt the disco guy had them for this purpose though..

  4. Ive searched for alternatives to waste spend some change on, I started with big and bouncy - to my surprise there were no proto/crawler cars in there at all, Over 40's didnt feature a single article on large tyres and barely legal had only scant details on SVA compliance..

    Im disgusted.

Someone fitted 36" tyres to a hilux and made it to this comic!

  5. Andy, I know exactly what I would do if I were you:

Fit the spare wheel of your ibex on the back door and have a good look at the loadbay to see how easy you can fit some seats in that.

You have done so much work to it, I personally would not part of it. Its a great piece of kit. You could downgrade it even by fitting smaller tyres but thats it. Job done!

  6. depends on what V8, later serpentine engines it will definitely not as they have a much bigger (36mm spanner size) nut on the coupling

True, I know this since I've got a brand new V8 Fan which did not fit my 300TDI. It is therefore your lucky day as I am offering the fan for sale. Pm me if youre interested.

  7. I wouldn't go for the cut and shut idea myself. The 2 different droparms are either the defender/disco 200 arm, or the disco 300 arm (which takes a standard ball joint), but their length is the same.

There is another possibility though, which is to redrill the steering arm on the knuckle, bringing the draglink closer to the kingpin.

This is what the Simbughinis run.

  8. I've allways found that road cars work best on the road, and conversely offroaders work best offroad

I can only imagine that you've some how compromised the offroad ability of you hybrid to enable it to be driven safely on the road.

Your not wrong there, but we need to keep in mind that many events have got many roadmiles between stages. Hell, on the RFC we drove from singapore to Kuala Lumpur (350 Km), then from KL to the prolog (250 KM), then 1000 jungle KMs and then 250 KM back to KL.

I dont rate specials with that cant go on the road and carry only 10 litres of fuel personally, Although they are obviously more competitive on one day concealed area events.

  9. Soo, just out of interest, whats wrong with dragging a competition car around on a trailer?

Kinda makes sense, especially if it is subject to legal interpration, surely the more miles you do the greater the chance of an accident/ pull, failure?

Most other motorsport disciplines accept that you trailer the car to an event, if nothing else it means that if you play hard, you can still get home?

I think the issue being that you potentially bring an illegal car, which then is used on the road in transit stages.

I also believe that towing your vehicle to an event is going away from the spirit of things. But probably I am saying this because I havent got the means to tow.

The ozzies have got the right format In my opinion: the cars are based on an existing car, with a given amount of freedom. There are no classes and the competition is fair and interesting I think.

  10. Daan - I'll be swinging by Jez's lab on Saturday (Basingstoke-ish).

If I have a long enough offcut for you, shall I leave it with him? I remember you may or may not have a welding gas tank issue to sort with him too...?

I'm not sure I'll be headed your way, otherwise.

    Al.

What time will you be there?

  11. All the above criterea describes the attributes of''Wild Fing'' my current Landy that now weighs in at 2300 Kgs. I doubt that I could build a vehicle with all the above abilities and keep the weight much below that figure.

    Bill

I have to say, my requirements are similar, but I think you easily can stay under 2000 kgs if you try. It would be interesting to weigh my vehicle in its current state. I believe a landrover is a great starting point with an aluminium body. The panels weigh nothing compared to most other off road vehicles. This is important, especially because I want to keep it full body for practical reasons. You can try going glass fibre or even carbon, but you must do something really special to beat the weight of 18 swg aluminium.

Homebase does a good deal on acrylic windows 2.5mm thick, all the windows in my hardtop are made of this.

  12. Ouch!

Well, let me know if its gonna be too wussy Daan.

Could you widen the whole winch to add rope capacity (possibly upgrading the drum at the same time).

    Al.

I happily go with 2 x 1/4. Widening the winch is not really an option.

  13. I dont think it has to be so much vapour talking. A landrover has got loads of potential, if you try hard enough. A series 3 weighs 1500 kg (officially), and what more is there than a defender? that was what I had in mind when i build mine. It was 1550 on the road, with winch, offroad tyres (not simex yet) but without cage. I built it from the ground up and every part has been looked at and considered what it really needs to be. The chassis was a big weight saving, the weight after galvanizing was 150 kg, 30 kg lighter than the 90 chassis it was based on. For teh rest, a lot of fabrication work> the panhard mount, cast iron, plain ridiculous. I fabricated my own, losing about 1.5 kg. It might not seem a lot, but continue this on everything and your car is much lighter.

  14. I think you'll find that 2"x1/4" will not be strong enough.

I use 60mm solid bar as i know of someone who's bent 50mm solid bar.

solid is not possible I am afraid, since the driveshaft goes throught the drum and the freespool mechanism is on the other side. What length was that then Dan? my drum measures 210 mm long.

bending 50 mm bar is quite an achievement in my opinion.

  15. Pto driveshafts generally don't have to transmit much torque for the winch to reach its rated capacity (around 45 ft lb with a 60:1 worm drive would give just over 8000 lb line pull on a loaded drum of 8'' diameter) so welding any suitable size UJ assembly is quite acceptable. I use ToyotaLandCruiser 60 series greasable steering UJ's shafts and proper splined slip joints on my winch, and they are likely to outlast the rest of the truck.

    Bill.

Bill, unfortunately, the story isn't that clear cut, since the worm and wormwheel setup gives a lot of losses; these depend on the ratio: the higher the ratio, the more losses. the Superwinch PTO winch has a ratio of 48:1 and the effiency of the winch ( based on input torque and line pull) is about 25%. This is mainly important on startup, once it is going the efficiency improves due to oilwedge buildup. So the shaft is transferring 4 times more torque than you would think. Myself and Adrian Martin (B reg 90) have done a lot calculating and discussing and what have you. I wouldn't recommend using steering column uj/s myself, purely based lookright-factor: and they dont look right for the job to me.

  16. Daan, I assume you are using plasma rope ? 50mm would be a bit tight for wire rope. I read sometime ago in a rigging manual that for steel rope the drum should be at least 13 times the diameter of the rope.

    Bill.

Thats right bill, I would not attempt this with steel wire. I am looking to get 125 ft of 11mm plasma on the drum, without too much risk of bunching to one side.

  17. My current drum is 3.5" diameter with a 4 mm wall (very similar to an 8274). I cant make it wider, and I cant make bigger sides either, so the only option is deeper.

Let me know, if you've got this size tube and what beer is your favourite, we sort out the logistics later.

    Daan

  18. Al , I can wait no worrys. If you have this that would be great, we will come to an arrangement.

I think this thickness is right for a winch drum, especially after I saw the failures of milemarker winches (split drums).

    Thanks for the replys.

  19. Hi there,

I am planning to make a new winch drum in order to take more rope. For this I need a bit of thick walled tube, dimensions 2"OD x 1/4" wall, length 250mm.

Has anyone here got this or knows a supplyer who can help me with this? My local suppliers only want to supply 6metre lengths which seems a bit of a waste.
