Is this for a Defender then, I've got the Disco type one and nothing like Westerns pictures

Yes afraid so, but really appreciate the offer. Given how simple it is, I will be able to make something up just by looking at the photo/doing some in-situ messing around. Thanks again, though.

  2. I love this forum. Everything I need is in the few posts above!

I can't repair my metal tank so after seeing that a new one is more money that the Allisport version, I went with that. The downside being that it's this TDi style of tank.

It looks like I've painted myself into a corner. I can't T-piece into the bottom rad hose as I already have too many bits (fan thermostat and heater/inlet manifold) spliced into that.

    PXL_20220321_182510779.jpg.7fc70f5f2d477

But maybe I can put a Y-piece into the smaller pipe coming off it. I think it's 16mm, so it's becomming a bit of a mess of different sizes.

The unknown is whether that acheives the same result as being directly connected to the bottom hose. Otherwise, I could block off the smaller pipe on the tank and get a 20mm>6mm(?) connection into the top of the radiator but I don't know if that's going to work the same.

  3. I think this issue is common across all dealerships. Many years ago I made the mistake of walking into a Mercedes dealership after phoning ahead about a car. The difference between first setting foot in the place to when they realised I was the "serious" buyer who had phoned was hilarious, the only reason I could think of was being aged under 30 at the time. I had come from work so was dressed appropriately..

I had already decided at that point I wouldn't be buying anything, but I can be extremely petty and had time to waste. I took an hour to look around a car and take it for a test drive, during which the saleswoman was all "premium, high-end, prestige" this and "luxury, affluent demographic, upper middle class design language" that. I got bored, informed them their plastics were no better than that of a VAG product and the engine would be better at home in some kind of agricultural vehicle and left. I was then treated like actual royalty at a Jaguar dealer.

It just shows how inconsistent your experience can be from one dealership to the next, never mind across brands.

snotty sales staff who's allegiance to one brand is fickle to non existent. Most I have encountered dance from dealership to dealership, BMW one / month year, Volvo the next.

This could not be more true, and they will look you in the eye and tell you why their current products are superior, having given the exact same line in the last place. Even after being greeted by name after they recognise you and know you've already had "the talk". It's barking.

The one thing we can be certain of is that this JLR rebranding won't fix the problem, it's industry-wide.

  4. Would anyone be willing to measure the length of the pipe from the radiator to the smaller (front) inlet on the 200/300 TDi expansion tanks?

I could also really use photos/measurements of the bracket that supports it on the inner wheel arch and how it bolts up at each end. Better yet - but a complete longshot - it would be great if someone would be willing to lend me a bracket so I can copy it to make my own. I'd pay all costs, of course. Just not willing to pay the £50 the usual retailers want.

I don't suppose anyone knows the internal diameter of the lower pipe that comes off the tank and what, if anything, would happen if it was blocked off and only the smaller one used?

That's a pretty broad brush. There are still enough people willing to buy new, by whatever means and who are we to judge, and not all buy just to keep up with the neighbours. Without those who purchase new there will be no vehicles for those further down the used chain to buy and perhaps spend their time fettling / improving.

That's not really what I'm saying but having just re-read my post, I understand why you think that. I meant that most new cars are now out of reach for most people without finance, which is sort of scandalous for something which is a basic essential of modern life.

I'm categorically not saying there's anything wrong with people who responsibly finance such a huge purchase. Selling cars at 100k+ doesn't help, though.

My judgement is on the kind of gimps who try to lord it over others with their (bank's) new car.

100K starting price on Jaguar, also baffling.

Will cars be only for the very, very rich?

I've felt that way about cars for a while now. It seems impossible to buy and own your vehicle from new, the best most of us can do is get something 5+ years old without the bank owning it for you.

I know a lot of people are quite happy living this way if it means they can drive a symbol of how well they're doing. The irony that they can't actually afford it seems lost though.

I look forward to the traditional Jaguar depreciation making any future cars infinitely affordable after only a few weeks.

Wonder what they will call the new(er) Defender then ? I guess the vast majority of new generation of buyers know not much at all of the heritage and history, and don't care about it.

Jaguar = Spivs and bank robbers cars, unreliable, rusty and don't last well ? The marques great days are long over.

The Land Rover name, legend, and history will live on though, like all the other great marques that have ceased to be.

This is one of the few times I'm going to (partially) disagree with you.

I'm probably more "into" Jags than I am LR, especially with the recent tribulations of my 90, I just like to keep things separate. In fact, this is my first time without a Jag in over 10 years.

This forum/culture is completely at odds with the Jag one, which may lead to the impression it's just another car brand unless you look into it. I can assure you is just as big as the LR following and just as passionate. The owners do have a different mindset entirely to maintenance and the like, which I don't always agree with.

Jag has a lot of history and has achieved some truly amazing things for what resources the company has historically had to work with. The Tata investment was a leap forward and led to it's best products yet, but disinterest/confusion from management and a market that moved away entirely from the large, powerful saloons that Jag's brand revolves around has led to stagnation in the last few years.

My money was on Jag being shelved as a brand that is no longer producing the models the current trend is after (the F Pace and I Pace aside).

Land Rover seems like exactly the direction things are heading and hybridisation/electrification would have future proofed it. It is a brand synonymous with the type of product it's creating, in the same way everything's a Jeep and anything that sucks is a Hoover. Or also a Jeep ...

I am very surprised they've gone this way, but then I know nothing about the industry. Along with the need to refer to models without putting "the" in front of it.

  8. Thanks Nige, plenty to think about there but the core message is that an ATB is kinder to the vehicle and will be cheaper to install and maintain.

Along with better performance in ice/snow and I've seen ATBs are better on wet grass, they fit my use case more than full lockers.

The only problem now is the head gasket/exhaust/fuel system issues (and a skiing holiday) having wiped out any chance of doing it in the next few months.

  9. When I went for my MOT, there was a very, very late 2016 Defender in the car park. Apparently it has also shat it's transfer box and was awaiting an entire replacement. No idea who from but I suppose they'll be long out of warranty now. It's interesting that it seems they have a different issue to the intermediate shaft one.

I'd still argue mine was having a worse time on the day.

presuming the govt doesn’t bring in a law preventing transfer of ownership of non-EVs at some point.  I shouldn’t give them ideas…🙄

They don't need to. They will just roll out the LEZ/CAZs until it is financially impossible to own a non-EV. Between that and the price/non-availability of fuels, there's no need to pass laws and they will disproportionately gain financially from anyone that tries to run them. I'm just (trying to) enjoy my car while I can.

I may or may not have passed through the Bristol CAZ last night. I say 'may' due to the lack of clear signage and the ridiculous route my satnav took me. I called to query if they could confirm and I would gladly have paid the £9. Nope. No way to do that, you just have to pay in case you think you did, the system isn't intelligent enough to confirm. Funny, it's intelligent enough to send a penality of £120 to my home address. It's almost like they want to collect money from cars that didn't even pass through those areas and make it harder for people to not pay £120 for the pleasure of unknowingly doing so.

    Sorry to derail another thread.

  11. The problem is between Facebook and places like here, you can find what you want to read about in far more detail. They lost touch when I stopped reading around 2010 and represented a kind of owner/enthusiast I couldn't identify with.
