  1. Thanks for the responses, i think map pockets are an essential for me, but I'm trying to work out where to find good quality non-plasticy ones! mahon257 where did you get the interior led lights? they look like they give really good light Thanks Sam
  2. Just to reiterate what bishbosh said; I sent my winch bumper off to McArthurs last week, very reasonable price and got it back a couple of days ago. looks good! Don't know how a bulkhead would come out however. HTH Sam
  3. I have recently purchased a chequer plate rear door card for my discovery. And I'm looking for storage ideas, I'm currently thinking map pockets & quick fists are the way to go, but has anyone done anything different? or have any suggestions? Perhaps some pictures Thanks Sam
  4. Many thanks for the input people, much appreciated, I think I'm going to go ahead and give it a shot, I'll upload some pictures upon completion! Sam
  5. I was not sure if this belonged on the defender forum, or discovery forum, so I though I would post here! As the title suggest has anyone done or heard of this modification? My experience of discovery wing mirrors (especially 200tdi) is that they are fairly brittle and do not take the same amount of abuse that the defender units take. I would be interested in seeing if anyone has fitted defender mirrors to a Discovery 1? From what I can see it would involve welding a plate onto the door frame, then is a simple case of drilling two holes and bolting the units on. Are there any MOT/legal implications? I understand that some may see this as a waste of time, and fair enough, generally my pondering mind doesn't usually produce great engineering concepts! However I thought if I was going to ask, this is the place to do it! Cheers Sam
  6. Hello All, I have been approached by a chap wanting to buy my 110 rolling chassis (with v5! nothing dodgy!) But I have absolutely no idea of its worth. I know that value is down to the individual, however would anyone be able to give me a rough estimate of what I should ask for? here is the spec Chassis of a 110 G Reg, good condition all over, but will need a new rear crossmember. Surface rust. Front Axle Standard - lots of play, nothing special. Rear Axle - Salisbury on drums good cond. On original springs All bushes will need replacing New Shocks required. Wheels - Standard land rover LWB rims with Avon rangemaster tyres. I know its difficult without a picture, but even the vaguest of ideas of what its worth would help me as he is coming this afternoon to view and (possibly) make an offer. Any Ideas Cheers Sam
  7. Thanks guys, as usual v. helpful, much appreiciated. LandymanLuke you have far supirior googling skills than myself! that was a really helpful link so thank you! I think I know where i'm putting my money now. Over and out Sam
  8. Hello All, Just quick question, Looking for a fuel filter for my Discovery and would like to go genuine or OEM ideally, however I have not seen any fuel filters actually branded land rover. I came across this on fleabay; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220177447194&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_755wt_741 Can anyone confirm if this is genuine or OEM? Obviously it is not Land Rover as it is branded Bosch, but do Land Rover actually make their own fuel filters? Thanks Sam 93 Discovery 200tdi vehicle in question
  9. I am looking for a fuel filter for my Discovery would preferably like to go genuine or OEM, I found this on fleabay; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LAND-ROVER-GENUINE-BOSCH-TDI-DIESEL-FUEL-FILTER-AEU2147-/220177447194?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item334399391a#ht_755wt_741 Is Bosch OEM? Many Thanks Sam
  10. It is interesting, I never knew that tyres noise was a particularly big issue in the UK! Considering that the vast proportion of cars on the road run road tyres which make almost negligible noise, I wonder why the EU have gone to the trouble of implementing yet another directive! Presumably if you have tyre noise you will also have accompanying engine noise, and as such getting rid of the tyre noise is fairly pointless as another form of "noise pollution" is still present in the form of an engine! I really fail to see the point unless I am missing something!?
  11. £130 p/ton when I rang my local place yesterday! my old man phoned up another place today and was told anything upto £100 p/ton, I know where i'm going! Sam
  12. Sound like pneumatics are the preferred option, I realise that for the most part the linkages are the simplest and preferred option, but I really fancy trying to get something like that working in the future, my vehicle doesn't see a lot of dust/mud/grime (I save that for my lucky 110!) so I am not concerned about that. Has anyone ever seen a pneumatic HI/LO shifter? I know that a lot of people will see the idea as pointless, and I can't really justify any mechanical advantage to the ram system, other than the fact that I think it would be very cool to be able to engage difflock on the flick of a button(man of simple pleasures!), so it is purely cosmetic! Sam
  13. Is there a kit like that available in the UK, or a way of making one? looks like the business! although I not one for filling land rover with electronic devices the often fail upon invasion by water and mud, this does look good.
  14. I have recently changed both my transfer and main gearbox and have been able to see how all the Hi/Lo and difflock linkages work, clever set up, but I found it difficult to set correctly, however it is now all done and dusted and works ok. But I have driven a lot of vehicles where hi/lo and difflock are a nightmare to engage either because they are not set correctly or there is mud/cables fouling the link setup, and in some circumstances causing it to jump out of hi/lo/diff, which got me thinking, whether it would be possible to do away with the gearstick and operate both hi/lo and difflock electronically, thorough a electronic ram system on the existing levers, each lever has three positions IIRC(hi,neutral,lo) (diff engaged, neutral, disengaged) would it be possible to do this? has anyone heard of a similar thing? I realise this may be a ridiculous idea, and some will consider it making a mountain out of a molehill, however I am attracted towards the Idea at engaging difflock/hi/lo at the flick of a switch! Just a thought! Criticism and opinions are welcome(I'm thick skinned!) Sam
  15. I have just removed all aircon components from my 200tdi, and considered swapping to a 300 style dash as I preferred the setup, but had a look and the work involved and decided against it! judging by the price of old 200tdi vehicles it wouldn't cost much to get all the aircon parts required from a breaker 200 and fitting is quite simple once the dash and centre trunking is out, I would suggest doing that. Hope this helps Sam
  16. Well they do charge what they think they can get away with, and obviously some people out there are willing and able to buy their products and most of these people are going to be land rover enthusiasts. It is a simple fact that someone is buying their products at these ridiculous prices, and those particular people are the customer base that keeps the company afloat. I personally do not have the means to purchase their kit, nor do I think the pricing entirely reflects the value, however I do feel that as long as people continue to purchase their stuff at that price then they that is the price it will stay at, but hey different people are entitled to spend their money on whatever they see fit, fortunately for me d44 do not have a monopoly position, and the beauty of the net means that those who feel that it is extortionate or a little out of price range can search around for a better alternative! just my 2p worth! Sam
  17. Well here is an update, I dropped the boxes of at AW transmissions last saturday, the owner is a really helpful guy, and immediately removed both inspection plates on the lt230 and explained to me (I am not familiar with the internals) what exactly was wrong, and what parts would be replaced. I opted for a recon and this essentially as mentioned afore on this thread involves replacement of all seals, gaskets, bearings(timkin I was pleased to see!), flanges, and repair/replacement of any worn/ broken or faulty items, and many other standard replacement internal components that I cannot remember. He showed me all the kit used in the recon and that the parts were of good quality and was helpful in answering my questions. So under a week later the shiny reconditioned units arrived on a pallet with a 12 month warranty, amusingly the 10p coin which was found jammed in the LT77 remote was also returned! Prior to their arrival the owner phoned me to tell me what he had done/found and give me the postal tracking code. So far so good, really chuffed with the service, he couldn't have been more helpful, very easy to get hold of, and opened the workshop on a Saturday to accommodate for my arrival, so as far as the service is concerned I am tempted to say that it must be up there with ashcroft, but I am yet to fit the boxes, however when I do I will update. But at the present I am a happy man Sam
  18. Well I have read all the various comments and as advised tried my local land rover specialist, they asked for almost double the price of most other places, and after several phone calls I realised that they do not do it in house either, they send them away, now fair enough, but as I have stressed money is a factor, so in light of this I have now placed my order with AW transmission, spoken to a fella there who seems to be genuine and knows his stuff, so I let you all know how it goes! Sam
  19. Well I have a 200tdi (disco mind) and have a straight through exhaust that terminates in the usual place and have never had a problem, it can be a little wearing on long journeys, does sound good generally , and again I agree it is not excessively loud if compared to v8's or tricked out saxo's! Haven't noticed a huge amount of difference in power. Yet to go through an MOT with it, but I will let you know as I have one coming up soon! Sam
  20. I agree with the last comment from aragorn, I have learnt from a certain amount of experience that the cheapest is more often then not, the cheapest for a good reason! And it is quite clear by talking to anyone that ashcrofts are the best, and as it has been said there position at the top of the trade is well deserved, and there is nothing I would like more than to go for an ashcroft box, however finances restrict me from doing this, hence my interest in other firms, good to hear some feedback about awtransmissions, I am very keen to go for one of there boxes based on what I have heard, and I know I will be paying for a re-con NOT a re-build, thanks to all for your input Sam
  21. Currently I am on the search for a re-con LT77S and LT230, and started by searching the forum so see what people recommended, and the overwhelming opinion is ashcroft transmissions, and it is quite obvious they have great rep. However as much as I would like an ashcroft box is is beyond my price range as a scrimping student! So i began trawling the web to see what the options are and have come up with the following; http://www.freewebs.com/tmtransmissions/ http://www.awtransmissions.co.uk/priceguide.html http://www.simmonites.com/gearbox.htm and a little more expensive- http://www.mdengineering.co.uk/index.php?act=category&cat_id=3 Now from what I can see it seems awtransmissions are the cheapest, however I am aware there is a price to pay for quality have to ask two questions 1. why is there such a disparity in price if you compare awtransmissions to ashcroft from the description of the recon process it seems the both provide the same service and give a 12 month warranty, could it be that ashcroft use better parts? 2. Has anyone had any experience with any of the companies mentioned above? I'm keen to know the quality of service before I part with hard earned pennies! I have a feeling that there must be a reason there is such a big price difference! Thanks Sam
  22. Just another quick question, apologies as I seem to be posting rather too many recently, to cut to the point I have been given the opportunity by a friend to do an engine transplant for him in exchange for a few beer tokens.. and being a student I am keen to snap up the opportunity! Initially it look straightforward... taking one engine out of an M-reg 300tdi discovery manual "the donor" and removing old 300tdi out of the P reg discovery automatic and placing the 300tdi from the manual M-reg into the auto P reg. It looked like a simple swapping of the same engine, however before I accepted I had a quick look at haynes for some further guidance, and after a bit of reading I have to following questions; 1. Will a 300tdi out of an manual(R380) be a direct fit to an autobox? 2. If so is it more difficult than putting a 300 into a manual (I have only ever dealt with manual gearboxes and have little experience or confidence with auto's?) 3. Have I bitten of more than I can chew for student mechanic with basic/reasonable skills!? This may belong in the discovery forum, however I thought that perhaps it may merit attention in the international forum, hope I haven't pushed my luck! Cheers Sam
  23. Who rebalances propshafts? anyone know any good places in sussex? and as far as the annoying vibrations go I think I will be stuck with them until I decide to perform an engine transplant! Cheers Sam
  24. I am in the process of repairing my rear propshaft (fitting new UJ's and giving it a coat of paint) and have a quick question regarding the small rectangular plate that sits on the end of the shaft, as the picture below shows it is coming loose, and no longer sits flush with the propshaft main body. What is the purpose of the plate? Does the fact that it is damaged affect the performance of the prop? and can it be removed? Cheers Sam
