  1. We have got 7l/100km in the wolf, over motorways, with a laden expedition vehicle towing a 1.5T trailer on MT tyres. (over 500km at 65mph) On mixed roads, we get around 9-10l/100km. We looked into Hiclones, but the evidence against them didn't do anything to justify the cost. Nick
  2. When I went to Eastnor for my RGS Land Rover course, I worked out that 70% of the cars I saw were Land Rovers (not counting all the ones at the Land Rover Experience centre) Nick
  3. Not mine, but taken by the Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia. Nick
  4. The other post seems to have been deleted, here is the original article. This is pretty unbelievable: Here was the diamonds found:
  5. Hah! I can picture it now... Pouring paint stripper onto a nondescript chelsea tractor range rover, the activist suddenly notices 6 very large men emerging from the building across the road, all looking Mildly miffed.... I am sure that the majority simply vandalise in the name of environment, as an excuse. While I doubt this happened at all, I have seen it happen in London, and I think these people should be punished for spreading this as a good idea for budding vandals. Nick
  6. I'd agree with that, just get a 50mm square beam (or similar) and weld a hub on each end. Although this shows the destruction of an axle, it does show how mega simple it is. Nick
  7. As it says, I want to get in touch with a Land Rover Club in Malaysia. I think it would be a sensible idea for Dan to hook up with a Land Rover club for a couple of days when his wolf arrives in Port Klang in 2weeks. We have just shipped the vehicle from Lahore in Pakistan, and Dan will have a couple of weeks on his own when the vehicle finally arrives in Malaysia before Rowan and Gabby get back from Nepal. If anyone on this forum is from Kuala Lumpur, and is interested in meeting Dan and seeing our wolf, please get in touch. Nick
  8. I would say Midland are very good, their UK supplier Alan UK are very helpful too. We mounted ours infront of the knees of the passenger on 110, it didn't get in the way. we then routed the antenna cable up to the roof and then along the internal gutterrail to the back. We drilled a hole 1 1/2 inches above the gutter, and mounted the antenna on the roof rack where there was a mount for a worklamp. I am sure I had some pictures somewhere, I will try find them for you if you want. Nick
  9. That model is amazing! the cockpit looks so real, and full size!! I spent some time at an airfield in Florida, (Kissimie Gateway for anyone interested) and they had a 2 seat spitfire trainer, being americans, $1000 got you 15 minutes ($5000 if you were English). they also had a P51 Mustang, $2000 for 15 minutes, and 2 harvards. once a week, they'd fire up the spitfire to take off, and all the students would stand behind the aircraft, just to be in the exhaust and propwash. AMAZING sound. I can't remember the name of the place, but, if you have a fortune to spend, and the next time I go there, I fully intend to! I'm sure it would be like nothing else on earth! Nick
  10. Hopefully next year will see the Aviation Authorities certify "Enhanced Vision Systems", and with that, Infra Red for civil aircraft, then you get good visibility in pretty much any conditions, while still seeing the real world. certification will allow reduction of required visibility minima by up to 1/3, (would mean none of the cancellations or delays we have just had) for take off and landing. Oddly enough, it is BMW who have made the IR cameras cheap enough to be widely availiable for civil aviation. Nick
  11. Thank you, of course your help is valuable, Daniel is also a fellow of the RGS, and we have spoken to the expedition Advisory centre. You are right they do have a great wealth of knowledge. We already have companies sponsoring our expedition, and one company sponsored us for £5000, provided half went to charity. If you have any further advice on supporting medical organisations in the field, that would be very welcome, especially as that appears to be your field of expertise. Nick
  12. The main objective of our experdition is to travel overland areound the world. We chose MSF because we support the work they have undertaken until now, and feel they are often overlooked when it comes to charity support. We are not doctors or nurses, but our expedition leader has taken an emergency medical technician course, so he knows how to apply a basic level of medical first aid. two of our other team members have some first aid experience. We do intend to carry out some support to MSF along our route, mainly supplying remote hospitals with medicines.
  13. We intend to sell most of the kit afterwards, with the agreement of our sponsors, donating the proceeds to the charities. But given that we are supposed to be the most charitable country in the world, what can we do to get people other than ourselves to give to these charities.
  14. Hello everyone, For our expedition, we are raising money to support Medecins sans frontieres. Unfortunately, we have been unable to proactively carry out fundraising events. We had hoped that visitors to our site may donate to our charities, but until now, despite over 500,000 hits, none of our website visitors have given anything. We have had some press attention now, and have appeared in papers across surrey, we have also attended car shows including the Dunsfold collection show in a bid to increase our profile. If anyone here has any ideas on how we may improve this, or please let me know. Nick + the Lone Wolf Transglobal Team
  15. The cape to cape expedition is using some for their arctic leg, but they have some video of testing it on grass etc. seems surprisingly useable, given that it must kill the already naf turning circle. Cape to Cape Expedition Video of tracks in use And yes, the Fiennes Expedition was supposed to use them. Nick
  16. This is our waffles, we carry two 5ft long waffles, which are attached between the rollcage on the rear. Here are some pictures, and lots more can be found on our website. Nick
  17. I've removed the photo which caused so much offence to David this morning, simply because I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea, especially if the woolly hat brigade get the same idea. Thank you for the positive response about our photos everyone, Nick
  18. With all due respect, Yes, we went down a greenlane, and yes, there is some artful photography, thats why we took a photographer along. Personally, I believe that if a road, unpaved or not really forces you to do anything remotely dangerous, or irresponsible, then it shouldn't be a road, and it shouldn't be driven. The last picture of the splash, was taken on a surfaced road, where we had driven through the puddle earlier in the day. The water was 8 inches deep at its deepest, It was not a ford, and was not connected with any running water. The excessive splash was partly computer enhanced. We had cordened off the road for 100m in each direction to ensure that we were acting responsibly and safely. We had checked on foot each inch underwater that the wheels would travel on, to ensure that there were no hidden rocks or ditches. Both my brother and I have completed off road driving courses, (Level 2 land rover courses) and Daniel who was driving has completed an IAM advanced driving course. That photo was taken simply to provide a 'good photo' for press releases. While I appreciate the need to encourage others to drive responsibly and reduce the media lust for wreckless driving photos, people do prefer to see them. As we were able to do this photo safely and with minimal risk to ourselves, the vehicle, the environment and others, we took a decision to do it. In terms of our 'chav' tactics, I fail to see how you see a correlation between a safely executed photograph, and much of the terrible driving I see on a daily basis. Nick
  19. Both the snorkels feed into the same airbox, but the theory is, as there are two snorkels, the bore is doubled, allowing more air into the airfilter. Hence more efficient running. Personally, I believe the reality is, the guy who put them there is totally pedantic, and wanted it to be even!
  20. One of the sisters to our one was on the cover of LRM a few months back, and a few companies have used these vehicles for their media.
  21. Some of our sponsors have asked us to send them photos of us using their equipment, so we duly set off on Sunday with a professional photographer in tow, and we got over 150 photos going along a greenlane in Guildford. I have loads of photos, but if you want any more, do ask me. I think the photos look reminiscent of camel trophy (only not so hardcore). More photos here, but this is a teaser: Photos credited to Syncapate Design. More Photos
  22. A good friend of mine, shortly after passing his driving test, swerved on a country lane to avoid a pheasant. He ended up flipping the car onto its roof, and landed on top of the pheasant, killing it anyway! Fortunately the guy was ok, just really shaken up. found its way into the local papers! Personally, I will not brake or swerve for anything smaller than a dog (not including a dog). the only exeption to this, is when there are no other cars for miles, and noone will go into the back of me, then I brake. Nick
  23. It has a winch on both ends, so that, when it comes to a ditch, you can send a cable either end, and zipline the car across! Speaking of which, I bet that WOULD be fun!
  24. Eastnor Castle last week... I was told it was a bit secret, but destined for the freelander launch in spain this week. It was actually built by special vehicles, see the land rover experience sticker on the side. I wanted a ride SO BADLY!!! I also passed 8 vehicle carriers loaded with the new freelanders on Friday, all destined for the continent, looks to be pretty amazing!
  25. I wouldn't say no to a Range Rover Sport alternatively, if land rover sold these... Strikes me as the most capable/ outlandish looking factory fresh land rover I have ever seen! Nick
