  6. do u fill it by the expansion tank cap or the little plastic bunged hole on the thermostat housing top?
  7. Hmmm I'm gonna run it up again and check - it may had been an airlock from when the top hose was leaking and i may had not toppped it up fully....??? fingers crossed wots the correct way to top up the system from scratch to ensure no air in there?
  8. Thanks Les I thought it was the HG with regards to the cracks - where do they normally go? is it something that can be seen, or does it have to be tested only to find them?
  9. I suspect that my head gasket may have gone stopped when coolant was leaking from the top rad hose, so topped it up - it took a fair bit. noted that when running and rev it, you can see bubbles in the expansion tank. then temporarily a white foam that disappears quickly. theres no trace of oil in the water or milky residue on the oil filler cap. what do you think?
  10. just reading the latest LRO today and in the 'orange company' racing pages they are selling tyre deflators that go down to your 'preferred preset temperature' hmmmmm
  11. cheers guys I will cane it first with some redex - failing that i shall trawl thru that lengthy link to find the info i need!
  12. hi all, my 300tdi chucks out a wedge of black smoke at very low revs before the turbo spools up - once the turbo kicks in the smokes goes (well turns into a slight haze). the pump has had the diaprham turned, but I have put it back to where it originally was and it makes no difference to the low end smoke. so the question is what adjustment do I make to the pump to solve this? MOT time this week so Im keen to solve it. cheers
  13. the rubber boot seems to be able to twist quite freely without it (the collar) on mine. Its only held on by a metallic hair band kind of spring. I also tried to fit it on there yesterday when I was trying to find out where it went, and it wouldnt fit - the diameter was clearly too small. seems to me that the bin was still appropriate!
  14. well whatever its called i have chucked, lobbed even tossed it into the bin! great advice Guys and thanks for the info in the tech archive. I loaded the new joint with castrol LM
  15. i dont have a picture , but if you go to this thread , about halfway down is a picture of the kit - the part I got left over is at the bottom of the picture in the middle http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=14338
  16. I today changed a kapput drop arm ball joint on my 90 - the arm wouldnt come off so I had to do it in situ which was entertaining...getting the top part out of the arm was tricky, as was getting the new one in! anyway I fitted all of the parts but had a part left over which I couldnt work out where it was supposed to go. I can only describe it as a metal 'collar' thats the same diameter as the hole in the drop arm. any ideas?
  17. thats very good - would that bed suit somebody of about 6ft tall? also could do with some curtains!
  18. i am not convinced by these things If things like that were so good new car manufacturers who spend £m on R&D to get best emissions fuel economy etc would fit them when the car is new.
  19. Tony take a peek on this forum thread for some of the worst welding I have ever seen! http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1040 the rest of the forum contains some good info
  20. well guys the compressions are as low as 100 on no.3 2 others are 120,130 and the other at 210+ (could read any higher cos its a petrol compression tester!!) Decided to drag it around the block to start it - well it did, smoke all shades of the rainbow, it was like a red arrows display! Oil pushed out of the filler cap and breather, and the oil light is now flicker when the engine is on idle. so I need to either do a bottom end rebuild or find a 200tdi bottom end thats going surplus ! any ideas?
  21. Any ideas where I can get Public liability insurance for a 4x4 club at reasonable prices?
  22. Simon cheers for that - as regards compression how much should we looking for?
  23. yep theres fuel at the injectors it turns over ok but all you can hear is like one feeble attempt to fire during the firing cycle
  24. My bro in laws 200 tdi just wont run it all started happening after a run to London - on the way back it began to misfire slightly and run rough. It had also pushed oil into the air inlet via the breather. when he got it home he switched it off and it has never started again. checked valve clearances - these were massivley out so adjusted back to what to they should be - still no start fuel soleniod checked ok heater plugs knackered - replaced still no start due to a trace of oil in the water suspected head gasket - new one fitted - still no start timing check ok what next ? any ideas? or should we be goin back over any of the above like the timing many thanks
  25. click on the above - I caught this today on my camera. The chap in the hybrid had a couple of goes at getting the stuck 90 out when on the third attempt the rope let go and went straight through the rear window. There was no shackle attached luckily, otherwise the poor guy in the 90 would had got more than a shower of glass. Closer inspection of the rope showed a knot in it at the point of the snap Could had been real nasty. Dave
