  1. What is the voltmeter earthed to? how is the int fuse box connected to the battery? Chris
  2. Ok Rob. Where exactly is the aux voltmeter connected to (both wires), and what type is is it please (analogue/digital etc). It sounds to me like there could be a dodgy connection on the feed to the voltmeter somewhere. Have you been able to verifiy any of the readings with a separate multimeter or similar? Batteries don't drop to <1v, so there must be a wiring/connection problem *somewhere*. Chris
  3. Ok, looks like I'll be avoiding those then! I was concerned about quality of plastic, having seen the type of abuse a proper Safari one would happily take. I guess I'll start looking at Southdown - I quite like the idea of a stainless pipe, but aren't they much narrower than a Safari - or did I just make that up from somewhere? Experiences and opinions please! Chris
  4. Does anyone have any experience of these? Looks like a cheaper option, but has a hint of something orange about it! Cheers Chris
  5. More details on the disco please. 200/300? bumper or cluster lights? brake lights too? reversing lights? indicators? is front affected? both sides, or just one? Tried plugging in a trailer if you have one There's plenty of people with a phenomenal knowledge base on the forum, but you'll get answers much quicker by providing as much info as you possibly can to start with. :-) Chris.
  6. I had similar experience after fitting my HID headlights - about 75% of the time when turning the HIDs on the immobiliser would activate, flashing the hazard lights. Switching off the engine, removing the key and then inserting again and turning to position 2 was necessary to stop them and continue as normal. Also, after doing this, the car would not lock on teh fob, or centrally from the drivers door. instead i had to repeat the key to position two sequence to fix it. Since removing my HID lights (cos they were carp), I've had one similar experience: going (fast) over a speed hump, then falling into a big pothole (100mm deep) the other side, causing an almighty bang and car bottoming out on bump stops, caused the same hazard light problem to recur. Same fix applied to good effect. Maybe earth problem like you say. Have you fitted any electronic equipment that may be noisy recently? Try the switching on/off and removing key trick - it might work for you! Chris
  7. You just answered your own question!! Seriously, I've a set f Britpart springs on order from Paddocks, so assuming they actually get delivered, I'll post up and let you know how I get on with them in the next couple of weeks. Chris
  8. another vote for KL71s. Had them on my old Disco in 235/85, wish I could put them on my current one, but this one will retain original suspension height and anti-roll bars (for now, anyway :-) Would consider parting with the 4 KL71s on RR Alloys for the right money. Very little wear. Chris
  9. I would have suggested Dingocroft as I've personally never had a problem with them, but you've obviously had a bit of bother. I can't think of anyone else who keeps parts on the shelf in Berkshire. It might help if you were a bit more specific about your location. There is Challenger 4x4 in Aldershot, worth a shot, but unlikely to have bits on the shelf like that. Muddy Trax in Aldershot only do genuine parts (pricey ones at that) but might have a washer jet. Main dealers are probably you only choice if you can't wait till tomorrow. HTH, Chris
  10. This has been covered in great depth on the disco3.co.uk forum. There's an excellent howto writeup there as well. Chris
  11. You might need to be a bit more specific than that with your requirements - single band or multi-band antenna, whether you're prepared to drill the roof / body, or need gutter/other non-damaging mount. What are you intending to connect it to radio-wise? I have used a slightly cut-down CB whip for 10m, and a 1/4 wave whip for 6m with good results. Happy to help! Chris M0TVA
  12. Thanks to all who replied, I've found the LED modules from mobilecentre.co.uk do exactly what I'm after - the narrow rectangular units fit perfectly above the door in a Defender.
  13. Afternoon all, I'm trying to work out some high-level tail, brake and indicator lamp units to go either side of the rear door on a 110 on the quarter panels. Has anyone done this, and which units did they use please? I'd prefer something all in one, trailer stylee, rather than 2 or 3 separates, really for ease of fitting. (Its not my truck). Cheers Chris
  14. As i'm about to have to replace my leaky oil cooler hoses on 300tdi Disco, does anyone know the thread sizes for the connections? Ive seen reference to 3/8 BSP female on the oil cooler end, is this correct, and what about the engine end of the arrangement. Incidentally my auto box cooler hoses are oozing too - any details on these muchly appreciated! Chris
  15. Brilliant! Thanks Western! Does anyone know any info about the threads/fittings? Thanks Chris
  16. Hi, My newly acquired disco has weeping crimped joints on both gearbox and engine oil cooler pipes. I'm looking for replacements, and will probably go down the route of the local hydraulics counter, but would like to investigate premade options first and can't find part numbers / diagrams for either. If i do go to the hydraulics place, it will be in the disco, so I won't be able to remove the hose first - does anyone know the appropriate threads/sizes for the connections please? Thanks Chris
  17. White smoke is also produced with a cold engine and too much veg oil - If it's running on veg. Chris
  18. As has come up several times recently (since middle of last year) different NFU brokers are like a totally different company - you will get totally different answers from one to the next. I don't know why this is, but familiarity with the type of vehicle is likely to be a part of it. So: Try ringing different brokers, and search on here for some recommended ones (mine is Price and Imber in Chippenham). Also, I found that once I left home, so there was no longer family business at the address, they would not insure me as I was under 25 at the time. They are good for modified vehicles - make sure they list them all on the policy. There is no charge for admin - adding mods/temp vehicles/temp drivers, much better than some others. Your policy will include basic recovery, but is cheaply upgradeable - check what you get for your money though, you may do better somewhere else. They haven't been so good at managing my claim, but that is the fault of their sub-contracted loss assessing engineers and some thieving gits at the recovery yard :-(
  19. Austin Allegro choke cable???? :-) Worked for my disco (strictly for use while stationary you understand!) Chris
  20. Does anyone use special discs for cutting stainless, and are they any good? Thanks Chris
  21. I found three places my 5 foot jack would go: 1> In front of dog guard behind rear seat headrests 2> Attached to rear seat mountings, in front, rather than behind where the roof bars/jack handle goes 3> On top of the 6th and 7th seats - but watch the windows! For all these places I dismantled the jack and stored it broken down - I rarely used it, and it does fit in the 2nd row footwell, if you have to, but is not secure from killing you in a rollover, and gets in the way. Chris
  22. I'm looking to increase my compressed air storage capacity to complement the smallish 24l tank on the compressor. It occured to me that I could use an old Propane or Butane cylinder (once emptied and filled with water to expel any gas). Does anyone know the thread used on these where the valve screws into the cylinder - is it something nice like 3/4" BSP, or am I going to have to weld on a sensible fitting? Thanks Chris
  23. If I hadn't bought it such a short time ago and it started leaking today when I fired it up the first time, I would clean and remake the connection. They have assembled it with some brown sticky goo as a thread sealant, and there are two compression fittings onto the part, which then connects to the tank. I'll almost certainly have to remove the compressor/motor and pressure switch assemble to undo the compressions, and if it still leaks after that they probably won't be impressed I'd had it apart. I'm thinking of a refund so I can get this one instead as it comes with the vacuum thingy and is made by SIP for only £14 more. Chris
  24. Has anyone else had a dodgy compressor from Aldi a couple of weeks ago? Mine leaks air from the brassy coloured connection to the tank, which must be in a specific orientation so I can't tighten it up. I'll be testing out their refund policy tomorrow as I guess they won't have any left. Shame really as it ran my air chisel pretty much continuously really well. Chris (Happy in the knowledge I'm picking up my new Disco later in the week! 99 300Tdi Auto with 84k :-)
  25. I had NRC4304s on my disco for a while for the same reason, but had britpart ones which were ok for a little while, but then sagged quickly - but unevenly, leading to a list to starboard! Genuine ones were sensible money - might be worth a phone call. ISTR they were red/white striped. Chris
