just a server like a web server but talks ftp protocol instead of http

you hosting company will have supplied the address of you ftp host (often begins ftp. ) and the account/passwd you'll need to connect to it.

Thanks, but I simply dispair. Hours of effort, and not a single reference from the hosting company about anything beginning with ftp. Why do they make it so complicated? Why not simply ask for your website address and a password?

My brain hurts! I'm going for a whiskey and watch some trash on the TV!

Thanks Roger for that. I am a bit further forward now. It is connecting but not with ftp in front, so I put my domain in the ftp and it seems to connect. However, it says there is an error with the remote host, which can't be found?

Cheers, Paul.

Your hosting company should have given you an FTP login, or details. It may well be that it's the same as your domain name, for example it might be:

ftp://ftp.transylvania4x4tours.com, the login might be transylvania4x4tours.com and the password could be whatever your password is with the hosting company.

To make that work in Windows you use ftp://username@ftp address, so, open a folder and type in the address bar:

ftp://transylvania4x4tours.com@ftp.transylvania4x4tours.com it will then try to connect and hopefully ask you for a password. Copying files is then drag-and-drop like windows normally is.

If you don't know your FTP details then you need to have a look at your web hosting account and see if you can find it. Just to check, you do have a hosting account with the domain name pointing to it and not just a registered domain name don't you?

Thanks for that. I contacted my web host for an ftp address which I got and put in. Managed to connect and then transferred files. Guess what, the site looks no different to before. I really don't know where I am going wrong. I am using Dreamweaver 3.

Cheers, Paul

when you log into your FTP server you should come up with a series of folders

one of which should be http docs or https docs

in there is where you need to save your home page (index.htm(l)

doesnt matter which one you put it in although id use the http (https is secure ie paypal type thingamijig's)

could try emailing you hoster you website and tell them to upload it for you!!

Yes!

How the hell did I do that??!

Needs a bit more work on it though.

:) :) :) :)

WOW! - it's great!

Now you need a few links...

Rog

p.s. I noticed that your mailto is directed at your AOL account - you should think about using the email facilities that will almost certainly be provided by you web provider, then you can have Paul@transylvania4x4tours.com (or similar) which IMHO looks more professional...

Yes, your right there, I just haven't worked out how to do it yet. I will get there in the end, I hope.

well done Paul, that's a significant step you've made and it will get easier from now on :D

Thanks. I have just worked out the e-mail system, with forwarding to my aol account. Not sure if it works yet, so please try it out.

Cheers, Paul.

You will probably find that your provider has some instructions on how to set up Outlook Express so that it auomatically does a "send & receive" on your site email server every few minutes while you are on line... I have just sent an email to Paul@transylvania4x4tours.com and it hasn't 'bounced' yet so I think it's set up ok (in actual fact an email sent to anything - any name, numbers etc - anything except certain (not permitted) characters followed by @transylvania4x4tours.com will get to your email account. I have occasionally got mails addressed to the likes of RogerTheShrubber@RogerWatkinson.com and other 'amusing' names ;) )

Once you have everything set up though, you MUST print out all details of setups, providers, accounts, passwords etc etc and keep it somewhere safe. Always bear in mind (especially since your intention is to run a business) what would happen if your hard-drive went POP and you had to set it all up again on a virgin machine :o

It's a brave new world out there - GO FOR IT :) :) :)

Everything was going well, but mail forwarding has stopped working and cannot work out why. I have sent a request to Telivo my Domain hosting, but they are closed for the weekend. Any ideas?

Cheers, Paul

Well your html appears sound, so assuming you haven't changed any settings at home (like directing them to junkmail - or blocking them in some way) then I guess you will have to wait until your SP returns on Monday. Don't worry though, from my experience you probably won't have actually lost any emails - they will still be there waiting to be picked up :) . In the mean-time, if you are worried about not seeing essential mails then you could just change the mailto to send the mails direct to your AOL account, bypassing the SP altogether...
