Keeper96
Hi guys I was wandering if anyone has a step by step guide to swapping transfer boxes in a series 3? Everything is out of the car as it’s currently being rebuilt. I have a good gearbox attached to a broken transfer box and a good transfer box attached to a broken gearbox, however after looking online simply swapping them about looks more complicated than with an lt230 so any guidance is greatly appreciated! Retroanaconda
I have a vague memory that the bolts holding the transfer box onto the back of the gearbox are inside the casing and require removal of the transfer gears to access. Could be wrong though! The workshop manual will detail the dismantling procedure so you should be able to asses what’s required from that. Keeper96
Cheers James, I’ll have a go tomorrow if I get a chance and let you know what happens. Im not known for reading the manuals, I usually just start tearing things to bits 😂😂

lo-fi
Yep, the intermediate and input need removing to access fasteners within the transfer box, if I recall correctly. The bolts holding the two boxes together are also, rather perversely, Whitworth, which ordinary AF spanners don't fit. Its nothing too hard, though. I think I did it first time by just getting stuck in.
Keeper96
I had heard that but my dad seems sure he’s got Whitworth spanner’s and apparently sockets somewhere
secondjeremy
Yes transmission stayed with BSF fastenings from 80in to the end. To separate - handbrake backplate must come off - remove drum and drive flange - linkage to handbrake and 4 bolts in the centre of the backplate. Now remove the transfer arm bottom cover, then the intermediate shaft - remove plate and lever out. Gear and thrust washers will now fall out - be careful - its sharp. take off gear at the back of the mainshaft and 3 nuts are revealed - undo them and the external ones and the transfer box should fall off. xychix
my 2 cents... start with the one with the broken transfercase that way no good box is ruined on failure and you get a chance to fiddle a bit.
