Low Range Gear Stick Stiff & No Diff Lock Light!?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Recently bought a 2000 110 TD5. All has been well so far but I've noticed the 4WD gear stick has gotten very stiff and nearly impossible to get into anything but H or N, I can get it into low but it takes a bit of work... is this normal and just a case of 'it's a Defender' and I need to improve my technique 🙄, or is there something I can do to help this? Also, the diff lock dash light used to come on but now I can't seem to get it, or it will flicker a little, so I dont think I can engage this correctly anymore either?

Any tips / advice? Keeping in mind I'm not the most engine savvy (yet!)!

Thanks!

Probably what Bowie has said the defender mechanism is not as robust as the old series stuff and very vulnerable to mud etc in my experience it will need a good clean lubricating and you will also need to adopt the habit of engaging low box etc in a regular basis to keep mechanism free and smooth regards Stephen

Forgive me if you already know this, but you need to use the clutch to change from low to high. There’s no synchromesh and so you will sometimes have to ‘feel’ the gear in by applying pressure to the lever while slowly raising the clutch.

Yeah I am using the clutch. Might try to 'feel' it in like you say... thanks!

Could be as simple as getting under the truck with some spray penetrant, and giving everything a good clean/lubrication.
