V8 to Gearbox Questions!

Recommended Posts

There are R380 boxes that were built to go behind the 4 or 5 cyl diesel, and others built with bell housings and input shafts to fit the Rover V8. You just need the right version.

If you get one that first lived in a Discovery you'll need to change the gear stick and selector assembly to the Defender type. Ashcroft transmissions (and probably other LR gearbox specialists) have all these parts.

Give that LR never dared fit the R380 behind the 4.6 Rover lump I suspect it could be a bit under-rated behind a 350 lump.

And yet you have an R380 and 4.6.

All down to one's control of the right foot ;)

Absolutely - but a 4.6 V8 is a very different thing to a 350ci lump of iron, you'll be able to lug it along in any gear and the engine won't care at all but the gearbox will be being twisted in half.

It's been bellhoused directly onto the engine. Not sure if that makes a difference but the gearbox hasn't had any issues and its been thrashed about in the mountains of europe

Well I don't know how else you'd connect it, but no - the issue is a large displacement lump with way more torque across a broader range than the box was designed for. However, as previously said, mechanical sympathy and driving style comes into it hugely, plus the fact that a petrol V8 provides 8 smaller/smoother lumps of torque per rev compared to the large 4-pot diesels which seem to give LR boxes a bad day. Also the weight of the vehicle will make a difference.

Didn't the US spec Disco 2 4.6 have the R380 as an option?

I don't think the 4.6 ever came with a manual option, either in the P38 or D2. Unlike the P38, the later D2 with Bosch/Thor 4.0 V8 was available with a manual as far as I know.
